That's a wrap! Huge shout out to the amazing team at Dalcourt Accounting, you were the reason our essential business stayed open through out the pandemic. It has been an extraordinarily difficult year for everyone and we are very grateful for our fantastic clients who supported us while we navigated the last 14 months. We wish that everyone stays safe over the coming months and will continue to assist our community.
Happy Friday!
Today is the deadline for tax returns! If you are a sole proprietor, your return is due June 15th. However, all payments are due today unless you made less than $75,000 and received CERB in 2020.
Thank you to CPA Canada for advocating for accounting firms and tax payers. We cross our fingers that the Government will come through and alleviate some of the strain caused by the pandemic with an extended deadline. Regardless, Dalcourt Accounting will continue to work tirelessly on the frontlines to support our customers. , , , , , , , ,

Discussions with the CRA on tax deadline relief continues
We continue to communicate with the CRA on the need for tax deadline relief with a focus on the April 30 deadline for personal tax returns. We also understand that many of you are concerned about the June 30 deadline for corporate tax returns for corporations that have a December 31 year end.
Since our last update on February 23, the IRS has announced extensions in the U.S. and we have heard from more members of small and medium-sized firms that they urgently need help. We are also very concerned about the emerging third wave of the pandemic based on recent statistics and news. We have communicated these concerns to the CRA, plus the hardships we know many of you are facing in respect of your businesses and personal lives.
While communicating the specific issues, we have focused on two key themes. First, the impact of tax deadlines are obviously much different when you are working to help a large group of clients meet their tax obligations compared to a taxpayer meeting their own. Second, our members are an integral part of the Canadian tax system and have been in the front lines helping businesses apply for programs such as the CEWS, the CERS and CEBA, along with the other services they continue to provide to taxpayers. This is a significant undertaking for many firms and it comes at a time when many are operating at a reduced capacity.
2020 was certainly a year to remember! Dalcourt Accounting could not have done it without the patience of our amazing clients and our fabulous staff, who still came in to work every day during the pandemic and worked extra hard to keep our operations running. And while 2021 hasn't begun much better, we continue to stay positive that it will end with family visits, vacations, and parties!
Thank you all.

New tax filing and payment deadlines
The deadline for most individuals to file their 2019 taxes has been extended to June 1, 2020. The deadline to pay amounts owed has also been extended to September 1, 2020. Penalties and interest will not be charged if payments are made by the extended deadlines of September 1, 2020. This includes the late-filing penalty as long as the return is filed by September 1, 2020.
If you, your spouse, or your common-law partner are self-employed, you still have until June 15, 2020, to file your taxes. However, your payment deadline has also been extended to September 1, 2020.
For those who have to pay by instalments, the June 15, 2020, payment due date has also been extended to September 1st. Instalment penalties and interest will not be charged for this payment if it is made by the extended deadline of September 1, 2020.

Found this interesting chart that does a decent job of breaking out benefits for business owners.
Salaried Sally and Dividend David are both Corporation owners.
The biggest issue we are seeing is for Sole-Proprietors as they don't receive a 75% wage subsidy like salaried Corporation owners. And if their payroll is under $50,000, they do not qualify for the $40,000 loan.
If you're applying for CERB payments this week, remember to apply based on the month of your birth.

Really important for low-income and parents of children under 18.
For individuals (other than trusts), the return filing due date will be deferred until June 1, 2020.
However, the Agency encourages individuals who expect to receive benefits under the GST or the Canada Child Benefit not to delay the filing of their return to ensure their entitlements for the 2020-21 benefit year are properly determined.
