It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of a dear friend and integral part of the Huronia Festival of Arts and Crafts and Kempenfest. Some of you may not have known or met her, but Alice was the "team" behind HFAC Team. A member of the Barrie Art Club, and an incredibly talented artist herself, Alice had been involved with the HFAC for many years behind the scenes as our administrator. If you had been a vendor prior to 2020, you may have even had the opportunity to meet her in the HFAC trailer, greeting everyone with warmth and kindness and her quirky Newfoundland accent.
..................................................................
Passing away suddenly, but peacefully on August 21, 2022 at the RVRHC, Barrie, Alice lost her two year long battle with cancer.
She was a beautiful soul and touched everyone with her kindness and love. She was a member of the Barrie Art Club, past president and membership coordinator and an amazing artist with a passion for painting her down home roots of Newfoundland. The world was a better place with Alice in it.
Family would like to thank the Hospital nursing staff of RVRHC for their kindness, compassion, and support.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to any Cancer Research group in your area would be appreciated by the family.
Thank you to the vendors, volunteers, sponsors, organizers and the amazing public who came to support! It's been a long 2 years and this year made up for it. See you next year Barrie!
The past 2 days we have been having a blast at Kempenfest in Barrie!
There are so many things to do here! We started Friday night off with a Sheepdogs concert, met so many new people, sold lots of soap, shopped with other artisans and antiques and more!
Tomorrow is the last day, so if you're around Barrie, or up for a road, I highly recommend stopping in!

Our Story
The Huronia Festival of Arts & Crafts was launched in 1971 featuring the first “original art only” event, held outdoors on the grounds of the formosa spring brewery in Barrie. The success of that first show was the result of a year of planning by Raymond Marshall and a handful of Barrie Art Club members. The show was juried and open to both members and non art club members.
By 1975 the show was a proven success and had outgrown its original home. On an invitation from the City of Barrie, it was moved to Centennial Beach and the entire waterfront was to become its present location. The Kiwanis Club had joined forces to co-sponsor the event and add food to its venue. Between the two clubs it was also decided to invite “crafters” to show & sell their wares. Other community service clubs recognizing the fund raising possibilities also joined in. Food booths, entertainment, midway, beverage gardens and other facilities were added and the show was soon bursting at its seams.
While each sub-group was responsible for their separate venue they shared a common goal – to ensure the event’s success! A board was then formed to include a “hands on” representative from each club. They named this governing body, Kempenfest.
