Is your furnace 10-20 years old? When was the last time you had the combustion checked to make sure it was safe to operate. Usually you think about furnace maintenance in the fall before heating season, but having a combustion analysis performed on your furnace in the spring can be proactive in letting you know the condition of the equipment before the next heating season. These are two heat exchanger that were replaced last week due to cracks in the secondary heat exchanger, both were leaking fatal amounts of carbon monoxide into the homes.

I recently saw a post on a community group, with a member asking about the government rebates for heat pump retrofits. There were multiple responses from hvac technicians shaming heat pumps and saying they only install "traditional" furnace and AC systems.
I hate the terminology of traditional systems. And when I hear other hvac technicians trashing talking heat pumps I see an industry unwilling to accept newer technology.
Yes heat pumps 20 years ago didn't perform well in our climate and didn't last because they were over worked. But today's heat pumps have no issues running in our climate and carry the same warranty periods as "traditional" systems. If they don't last why do manufacturers offer the same warranties? Poor installs cause shortened life spans on equipment, so maybe it's more technicians unwilling to change and adopt new technologies that make heat pumps fail.
The majority of the systems I install are heat pumps and with great success and customer satisfaction. Your electrical bill will increase, but your gas bill will go down, and with a large carbon tax increase coming in April heat pumps are the way to go. For a more efficient, quieter operating system, and a more comfortable environment in your home a heat pump is the best option.
