I’ve had so much fun seeing the development of this e-design clients home (she lives in Ottawa!). We started out by coming up with some design ideas for the living room about a year ago and now we’ve moved into the rest of the house. Everything has been done completely virtual and at the clients pace. This client had a great foundation to start with but needed help with a few styling problems once the furniture was in place. You can see the styling help I gave her with the buffet area and how she executed the decorating afterwards.

E-design can be really helpful for anyone struggling to find furniture and decor or if you need a little extra help for styling certain things like a coffee table or cabinet.

Is there a secret to styling sideboards and cabinets?

One thing to remember when styling your sideboard or console table is that it’s more then just storage. There’s lots of ways to add functional design while making it a great place for displays.

1. Create symmetry (but not too much)
Note how I have a large vase with a stem and then on the opposite side I’m creating height with a stack of books and a bowl. You don’t want these ends to be identical but you want these to be your taller/bigger decor pieces with a few smaller pieces near them.

2. Make it practical
Are you decorating a console table in your front hall? Maybe you use a decorative bowl to catch your keys. Maybe add rattan baskets inside the cabinet to add texture while still organizing your kids toys!

3. Let art work shine
This is a great spot to add one of your most loved art pieces. It really showcases and anchors the area if you have a great art piece above. Or maybe you are family oriented and you want a gallery wall with a few frames with your families pictures.

There’s so many great options to help create a beautiful display area while keeping the functionality of these cabinets.

Really needing all those cozy vibes during this snowy day in Ontario❄️

This month is and I just wanted to share a post supporting all the men in my life. And very importantly talking about construction workers.

As a designer each and everyday I work with construction workers including contractors and trades workers. I also grew up with my whole family being in the trades and have seen what construction workers go through on a daily. It’s mentally draining and physically demanding. It’s the waking up at 4am and getting home at 8pm. It’s following rules. Working in dangerous situations and having your life on the line each and everyday.

A lot of the time men keep mental health or even stress to themselves because society has created this image of “manning up” in stead of “speaking up”. Since construction is a very male dominated industry, this can lead to very masculine work environments where people are afraid to speak up or discuss problems. I’m here to say talk to your friends, employees and colleagues. Make speaking up normal a lot of you are going through similar situations and it can help by talking about it.

Since my family is all trades workers and 4/6 of them are male it’s scary to think of them both having a voice. We have been very big on talking things out and making problems and feelings known to one on another. This only started the last few months and as siblings, daughters, spouses and friends it is our duty to make that decision to talk and support.

Men in construction have a 3X higher su***de rate.

1 in 5 construction workers have mental health issues.

It’s time to change those statistics.
