We often think of food when we hear of the word "vegan" but veganism is really all about justice, using our daily choices such as what we eat, what we wear, what we do for entertainment, as a way to oppose violence towards animals and embrace a lifestyle that does the least amount of harm. ⚖️🌱☮️

We are so grateful to for their sponsorship for the second year in a row 🙏 - we literally cannot run this first rate festival with FREE admission, FREE bus shuttle, FREE entertainment without sponsors like you! We are so grateful!

Are you able to support our non-profit, volunteer run event to keep it going year after year? Check out our sponsorship package and all its awesome perks 🤩 at https://www.burlingtonvegfest.com/sponsor-info

Veganism may be mostly about the food but it is also about avoiding animal products in our clothing too because the animals are exploited and killed in both industries!

We are so honoured to welcome Vikki Lenola as one of our speakers!

Vikki Lenola is the Producer/ Director of The Vegan Fashion Show. Vikki holds an Environmental Studies degree from the University of Waterloo along with a Business diploma from a private college. She followed this with an Effective Altruism fellowship at UCLA focusing on effective animal advocacy.

10 years ago, Vikki was the exclusive supplier of handcrafted bridal accessories for a bridal boutique. Soon after she tried modelling instead, and went on to work with hundreds of brands. She is now also the founder of a top tier public relations agency, Lenola PR.

All of these experiences have helped Vikki understand the needs of brands and how to promote them. As an animal rights activist, she realized many people were unaware of the ethical and environmental issues that come with exploiting animals for fashion… nor the alternatives available. A strong believer in offering a solution when pointing out a problem, Vikki found herself wanting to promote vegan fashion brands and innovative materials.

Vikki Lenola’s images and endeavors regularly land full features in the world's most renowned publications like Vogue, Forbes, Yahoo, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, and more.

We are thrilled to announce our 2024 Burlington Vegfest Keynote - John "Bad Ass Vegan" Lewis. 🤩🌱💜

At a young age of 13, John found himself at 315 pounds, but through hard work and dedication, he lost weight and excelled in football and basketball. He continued his streak of athletic excellence throughout his high school and college years with a full-ride scholarship to Harris-Stowe State College. Graduating with a Bachelors's degree in marketing, he later went on to pursue his MBA from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

John’s education in business coupled with his love for health and fitness gave him the ability to start his venture – Bad Ass Vegan – a health and nutrition company that strives to educate individuals on plant-based nutrition. John’s love for his community brought forth the brainchild of “VeganSmart”, a plant-based protein shake company with a foundation whose mission is to prevent obesity through education, physical activity, and plant-based nutrition.

As a well-renowned fitness expert, John Lewis has spent over 2 decades in the health and fitness industry and played Division I college basketball. John is highly passionate about not only his own health and fitness but that of others as well… This is evident through his motivational messages either through his international public speaking engagements or simply through his social media outlets.

Today, John has taken his passion for health and is now directing his first feature-length documentary focused on food and social justice. John has teamed up with the maker of the award-winning “What The Health” to create their joint venture “THEY’RE TRYING TO KILL US”.

Checkout our Linktree for more details on our festival and about John's must see documentary "THEY'RE TRYING TO KILL US".

We love The Hearty Hooligan!!! 🌱😋😋😋

https://www.facebook.com/share/u7CoSaXsyhEtKGvV/?mibextid=WC7FNe

For the uninitiated, the word ‘vegan’ might conjure certain images: piles of lettuce, power bowls, Pilates, maybe even an air of pretentiousness.

Those images couldn’t be further from the truth for Hamilton entrepreneur Staicha Kidd, whose restaurant The Hearty Hooligan is about as countercultural as veganism gets.

The phrase “Keeping Vegan Trashy” adorns the front door of the 292 Ottawa Street North restaurant, priming visitors for what to expect when it comes to Hearty Hooligan’s quirky punk vibes and menu of what Kidd affectionately labels ‘vegan junk food.’

Kidd, a law school dropout who ditched academia for something closer to her heart, became vegan in 2010 and found herself frustrated by the public perception of the plant-based lifestyle. The idea for The Hearty Hooligan – which opened in February 2017 - came out of a desire to dismantle those stereotypes and stigmas, proving veganism doesn’t only have to centre clean eating or diet culture.

“Even in the years that I worked in a factory while being in school, when people I was stuck on the line with for hours at a time were mildly curious about my veganism would ask, I took a great amount of joy in telling them about all the fast food you could still eat and all the accidentally vegan junk food you could find at grocery stores,” she says. “I was big into making veganism accessible and not intimidating.”

True to her words, The Hearty Hooligan upends everything you’d expect about a plant-based eatery. The menu is certainly indulgent: think gooey pizza pockets (which recently became available for retail at over a dozen Ontario stores), hefty burritos, nacho platters, loaded fries, and desserts made from scratch using local ingredients.

The variety on offer proves you don’t need meat, dairy, or other animal products to make comfort eats, which helps explain why over half of The Hearty Hooligan’s customer base consists of non-vegans. They don’t eat the food because it’s plant-based; they eat it because it’s delicious.

But the draws at The Hearty Hooligan go far beyond food & drink. The 100% women-owned spot is also a community hub known for its outreach, 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusivity, and events like trivia and drag nights. The staff mainly consists of q***r and neurodivergent folks, and Kidd prioritizes healthy work conditions including 4 days on, 3 days off work schedules; and benefits for employees working more than 30 hours weekly.

About to celebrate its 7th anniversary, The Hearty Hooligan shows no signs of slowing; and if its strong reputation is any indication, Kidd’s ‘little-vegan-spot-that-could’ will remain a Hamilton favourite for many years to come.

“Not too shabby for a place run by some law school dropout punk girl that so many people said wouldn’t last!”

See more at https://www.theheartyhooligan.com, and visit them at 292 Ottawa Street North!
