Celebrating 95 Years with Chanchal Cabrera, MSc, FNIMH, RH (AHG)
“Dominion Herbal College is a cultural icon of the English-speaking herb world. As the longest running Herbal Medicine school in North America, it is the repository of traditional knowledge, the historical heartland of Herbal practice and the alma mater of almost all practitioners of western Herbal Medicine that trained in North America in the 20th century. Dominion Herbal College kept alive the flickering flame of Herbal knowledge through the darkness of the early and mid-century suppression of traditional healing, and was perfectly placed to step up in the latter part of the century when Herbal Medicine experienced a renaissance and suddenly high quality clinical Herbal Education mattered again. Dominion Herbal College has been a leader of this renaissance and is recognized throughout the Herbal community for its commitment to the Herbs, to Herbal Medicine and to Education. Congratulations on 95 Years!”

“It was so exciting when I opened the envelope and saw the application from Dominion Herbal College! Wise, witty and wonderful Ella Birzneck looked me over and asked about my family and why I was enrolling. I told her about my fascination with plants, herbs, health, including my Doukhobor heritage.
The first DHC seminar I attended was at the Chilliwack, British Columbia farm; 35 acres of pristine land, walnut trees lined the Fraser river; a huge fig tree growing in the greenhouse, a refurbished barn to hold the lectures, ample room for campers and a lovely kitchen for the three beautiful and nutritious meals (provided by Dr. Judy Nelson’s Health food store) served daily. Bernice Birzneck made sure everything ran smoothly. There were workshops & lectures by many renowned people. Dr. Ryan Drum offered daily walks on Herb identifying and spoke about seaweed; Svevo Brooks shared the delicate power of making Flower essences; Dr. Art Birzneck showed us the method of Kinesiology; Anthony Godfrey took us outside to listen to what Mother Earth spoke to us through the plants, trees, flora and fauna. Yoga, Tai Chi, Meditation, Anatomy & Physiology, herb gathering & preserving; salve making, tinctures and the list went on.
The clinic in Burnaby was always busy. Ella had a sliding scale even four decades ago. She would say that those with abundance made up in their generosity of those who had very little. No one that needed assistance was turned away. I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Ella.
As my mind absorbed information, so I was asked to share with others. I hold DHC with great respect and am honored to have been Ella Birzneck’s last apprentice. With the gifts of knowing how to gather, preserve, make oil extractions, salves, creams, tinctures and so much more, I thank you.”

“Thank you for the invitation to contribute some of my Dominion Herbal College memories. I studied Herbal Medicine with Ella Birzneck (past President of DHC) for 12 years and taught at the DHC summer seminars for 35 years.
One of the most important things I remember is going on an herb walk, with Ella leading, as she introduced a patient to the various herbs that would help resolve a pathology. Ella would stop by a lush growth of the particular medicinal herb, grab a big handful, pluck it, crush it in her very strong hand and rather abruptly shove the herb under the nose of the patient of the moment and insist that the person take a serious deep breath to inhale the odors and vapors that the wounded plant might be exuding as a wound response. The idea was that the wounded plant would be creating and exuding healing vapors and fluids which were intended for its own healing and which would in turn likely emit fluids and odors therapeutic for the startled patient. I soon after incorporated this sn**ch and stuff approach in my own herbal practice. I did no serious double-blind research, but I did observe that healing nearly always seemed to be enhanced subsequent to this action. If fresh live plants are available, I still do this rough introduction between healing herb(s) and sick/wounded patients. I have not observed healing enhancement when previously dried herb material was used when no fresh wet live material was available.
Fond regards and greetings to the DHC family.”
