Carbs and fats, evil little beings, right? Or maybe they're just nutrients that your body uses as building blocks for all the things your body needs to function well.

The biggest problem is when you avoid carbs and fats, your body goes into panic mode. It will do whatever it can to encourage you to get the nutrients you need.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And when you don't listen to it and continue to avoid carbs and fats, your body's signals get louder until you can't avoid them anymore.

For many people, this looks like losing control over your eating, eating way more than you intended to, and eating foods you've been trying to avoid.

The moral of the story - the more you avoid, the more you crave. Listen to your body!

3️⃣ You have the right to honour your fullness even if that means saying “No, thank you” without explanation to dessert or a second helping

4️⃣ You have the right to stick to your original answer of “No.” even if you’re asked multiple times. Just calmly and politely repeat, “No, thank you, really.”

Feeling the pressure to change your body in 2023? What if instead of focusing on shrinking your body and regulating your eating and exercise, you focused on goals that would improve your relationship with your body?

✨ Instead of setting a strict exercise routine ➡️ try a new or favourite form of movement that makes your body feel great: Dancing, walking, hiking, playing tag with your kids!

You've probably heard crash dieting, but have you heard of crash exercising? This is the way most of us approach exercise when we're looking to make big changes in our fitness and body shape and size.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You plan a schedule of exercising 3 to 5 times per week for at least one hour a day and you make sure to add in lots of cardio and strength training. Sounds good right?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What you might not realize is this plan is set up for doom from the beginning.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When we start a rigorous exercise regime, especially when we've been less active for a period, it creates an all-or-nothing relationship with movement. And we set the bar so high that we begin to associate movement with pain, exhaustion, and believing we're not good enough.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🏋️ I want to invite you to take a different approach in 2023. Scrap the plans for your big return to the gym instead think of ways you can add joyful movement into each day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A walk on your lunch break, parking further from the grocery store, dancing in the kitchen while making dinner, and if you truly enjoy it fun class at the gym when it feels good for your body.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Let me guess... the weight loss ads have started to pop up, Noom cookies are practically stalking you, and you can feel the guilt of all the Christmas treats and turkey dinner weighing you down... and you're thinking - one more diet and I'll finally get my eating under control.

🛑 Screech... Let's slow things down. Stay with me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Diets don't work (I was pi**ed off when I realized this too), and actually lead to weight gain for the majority of people.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Remember when you beat yourself up for regaining weight after your last diet? Guess what... that's how your body is designed to respond.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ready for the science?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Metabolic adaptation” or “adaptive thermogenesis” happens when you reduce your caloric intake. Your body wants to preserve its energy, so it suppresses your body's ability to burn fat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Studies show that the body shifts to using its protein sources for energy which uses lean mass in the body, rather than fat.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Overall, your resting metabolic rate decreases. You’d hope that things would go back to normal when you stop dieting, but the body isn’t quick to catch up - it’s still worried that the next famine is around the corner.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So that weight you gained? NOT. YOUR. FAULT.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Step one - don't start that diet
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Comment "Count me in!" below if you're ready for an alternative to dieting that will repair your relationship with food and your body.

Diet culture is full of empty promises - you’ll be happier, you’ll be more accepted, you’ll be more confident - but what does it all cost when dieting doesn’t work in the end?

In the end, the cost is much higher than the momentary rewards. And you actually feel less confident, you’re more self-conscious of your appearance.

This sets you up for a repetitive cycle of dieting and feeling like you’ve failed when you stop.

The first diet is exciting. You feel powerful and in control. All the positive things associated with being thin are within your reach. And then you end your diet and you slip back.

Initially, it can give you a sense of control and optimism but in the end, it can create a negative impact on your physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioural self.

My body has changed. ❤️ It has grown and carried a human life for 9 months. It’s stretched and expanded. It’s also carried me through hard years of school, night shifts and all the adventures of becoming a new mother.

A younger version of me might have felt uncomfortable wearing a bathing suit, but I’m feel more in touch with my body than ever before.

So when we were planing our family trip to Mexico, I knew I wanted to find a bathing suit that matched my little water baby. I’d been eyeing this set from and finally ordered.

For me, not only wearing the suit but buying something that I feel comfortable and fashionable in, matters. I’m so happy that I’m in front of the camera on this trip and making memories with my family!

Our Parallel Wellness Story
Long before Parallel Wellness, my counselling practice started as a desire to serve clients in my community. In 2012 I jumped at the chance to join a new holistic clinic in Burnaby, BC and begin my journey into private practice. The practitioners I worked with at the clinic were all eager, motivated and passionate about helping their clients. I was excited for the opportunity to work closely with like-minded professionals. For me, working as a therapist in private practice was an opportunity for more freedom in how I worked with clients that community program mandates cannot permit. I also wanted to be able to provide evening and weekend sessions for clients with busy daytime schedules and expand my practice to work with families and couples.
In my practice, I view therapy as an opportunity to connect with clients in shared human experiences. I believe that human connection/disconnection and emotion are what drive our thoughts and behaviours. As a result, I’ve strived to develop genuine, professional relationships with my clients so they can achieve their goals and personally grow into their best selves. I’ve taken a special interest in working with couples, families, and individuals dealing with eating disorders. I’ve also worked with clients experiencing relationship conflicts, depression, anxiety, life transitions, and other related challenges. It’s been incredibly fulfilling work for me, and I’m inspired on a daily basis by my clients. (Thank you!)
Adding a New Path - Expanding the Practice
As the practice continued to grow and I received the amazing opportunity to pursue a PhD, I began to realize that I couldn’t do it all on my own anymore. For those that know me, I have a tendency to try to do it all on my own. If I can learn it, I can do it – and I love to learn. No challenge seems unachievable. However, in order to offer our community quality counselling and therapy services I needed the expertise of other qualified therapists and allied health professionals.
