Edgehill Education
This page was created to share my passion for helping children thrive as they learn and grow. I run a home education classroom for six incredible students!
I'm an Alberta teacher and Early Learning Specialist. I am so grateful for all the lessons and learning I've received from the talented teams of child psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, behaviour specialists, teachers, and education assistants during my work in early intervention. My teams and I provided coaching and mentoring for parents, EAs and teachers to support presch

My Grades 4-7 just rocked their photo essay assignment. Check out some of their beautiful compositions.

One of the many perks of homemade education. Some days we head for the hills; we explore the beauty of nature, and wander in its magic. Learning comes in many forms, often not at a desk.
I hope the spring sunshine finds you today. Happy Friday!
Good advice.
The library has always been one of my favourite places. I usually have about 5 books on the go in various genres. I don't always seek out particular books, sometimes I just grab one that I feel drawn to from the shelves. I've discovered some amazing books this way!
Recently, using this method, the universe gave me a book called Knowing Where to Look, by Light Watkins. The book can be read at random, and offers 108 daily doses of inspiration. My students and I love this book and its beautiful daily doses of inspiration, creative energy, and positive connection with ourselves and others. They take turns giving me a number and we flip to that page during our morning meeting.
Today's passage was perfect for teachers and parents. A reminder that we're all doing the best we can under our current circumstances. A reminder to connect, before we correct.
A reminder that we can be gentle with corrections. Rather than say, "no, that's not right." we can say, "That's a good guess/try/attempt, but...".
Connection before correction. A beautiful method to sustain engagement and confidence.
We've been working on improving our growth mindset. We learned that our brains become hardwired to easily follow repeated patterns, or respond to repeated phrases our inner voice speaks. Such as the examples my students shared when faced with challenges.
However, we also learned that when we repeatedly choose new healthier ways of thinking, with time and effort, our brain will begin to habitually choose this new healthier neural pathway.
The potential for a healthy mindset is real and inside all of us.
The students were asked to rewrite their negative patterns of thinking into healthier ones. I love what they came up with. A good reminder for us all.
Without a healthy growth mindset, learning can often feel overwhelming. We work on developing our grit and determination; and recognizing that all the small steps lead to big progress.
Happy Friday!
Some recent art by my Grades 4-7 students. These are oil pastel non-objective abstract pieces inspired by the works of Wassily Kandinsky.
Beautiful!
Iโm going to start doing this. ๐
The beautiful magic of childhood. Such a wondrous time. ๐

Happy Halloween from Edgehill Education!
We are holding a pumpkin decorating contest. The students were tasked with decorating a pumpkin as their favourite book character. Take a look and let us know in the comments which one is your favourite.
Thanks for helping us with your vote!
Have a happy and safe Halloween :)

Modeling the behaviors we hope to see is our most important teaching tool. Practice coping skills together and then put to use when you need them. Here at school we practice meditation, deep breaths, respectful communication and calm down techniques. We are learning how to respond, rather than react to conflict. I always tell my students theyโll be better at this than a lot of adults. The results of this learning has been beautiful to observe.
Never too late to start ๐
For all the spirited ones. Teach them kindness and let them run a little wild and free. They are the game changers, the go getters, and the muses for a new and better world ๐

Grades 4-7
Back to school can be exciting and overwhelming. Our kids need a little extra empathy while they navigate their new routine. Lots of care and gentle attention at the end of their school day will help calm frayed nerves. ๐
It's been a busy fun summer! Lots of bucket list adventures checked off for my summer care students :)
Time to prep and plan for a new school year. 2023-2024 here we come!
