🌟who feels confident speaking in meetings,
🌟no longer feels embarrassed because people ask, “Can you repeat that please?”
🌟overcomes their shyness and connects easily with their English speaking colleagues and clients?

Over the last 10 years, I’ve worked with hundreds of Asian managers and professionals who have used my strategies to find their “English” voice.

They discovered how they can overcome their challenges in pronunciation, mindset and communication, so they have the skills to speak up, persuade, negotiate and get promoted.

They realised that as managers who have advanced English, they no longer need a language course with only vocabulary and grammar.

But they need a language course that:
🔑helps them build a confidence mindset,
🔑increases skills in communication and leadership and
🔑helps to set SMART goals for self learning.

The room was enthralled.

People leaned in and listened intently as the young Chinese lady spoke on the screen.

I held my breath and identified with her anguish as she mentioned the difficulties with her parents.

As an English teacher, I could hear the slight accent, the occasional wrong pronunciation and the intermittent missed grammar.

But I didn’t care.

Her story was captivating and I wanted to know more.

What happened with her relationship with her father? How did she overcome her depression?

I looked around the room. Others felt the same as I did.

Tears rolled down my eyes. I took in a deep breath and sighed, feeling her pain and feeling her joy as she reconciled with her father.

As I watched the audience, I realised that listeners are not concerned about perfect grammar or flawless pronunciation.

Listeners are enthralled when they hear about people they connect with and they can feel with.

Have you been so concerned about your grammar and your vocabulary that you’ve been too scared to speak up?

But you’ve forgotten about connecting with the heart of your audience?

Zoom in to your stories. Zoom out to make your point.

What do you think?

You want a higher paying job but your resume is not getting noticed.

In my previous post on resumes, I suggested you start writing your resume by asking:

“What does my reader need to know?”

You are wondering, “How do I find this out?”

Here’s how:
🧭Check job postings for your industry. (Yes, it’s that simple)
🧭Look at the job descriptions that you want to apply for. (Don’t check 1 or 2. Check 7 – 10 job descriptions)
🧭Note the skills that they look for.
🧭Note the skills that are repeated in the different job descriptions.
🧭Do you have those skills? Do you need to upskill to get the skills?

Remember that a resume is a sales pitch.

You are boldly declaring what you can do, how you can add value to the company.

As a professional, your skills and abilities can be communicated in your resume.

YOU are the product.

You are selling yourself.

The future employer is the customer.

Do you know the needs of your customer and does the product (your skills and abilities) match the customer’s needs?

I work WITH my clients to write their resumes so they can stand out as a candidate and be invited for an interview.

Writing a resume is one of the projects clients can choose to write in my 𝟑𝐒 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞.

DM me “Interview” if your resume needs help.

I re-watched 'The Sound of Music' for maybe the 10,000 time.

It's that time of the year!!

Let's combine English skills and our favourite movies.

What is your favourite Christmas movie?

Summarise it for us like this: SWBST

SOMEBODY – Who is the main character and where are they?
WANTED – What do they want?
BUT – What is the problem? What stops them from getting what they want?
SO – How is the problem solved? Who or what helps them?
THEN – How does the story end?

My favourite movie at Christmas is The Sound of Music.

Maria, a nun in Austria joins the von Trapp family as a governess.

She wants to bring back joy into the house which was lost because of the death of the children's mother.

Maria falls in love with the children's father, Captain von Trapp. But she feels conflict within herself because of these feelings as she believes she was meant to be a nun.

She flees back to the abbey. When the Reverend Mother finds out about Maria's feelings, she sends Maria back to the von Trapp family.

The Captain and Maria confess their love for one another and they marry. However, it's the beginning of the N**i occupation of Austria and the family has to flee over the mountains.

Summarising is an excellent writing skill to learn.

Tell me about your favourite movie by summarising it in the comments below.

A little variety on my Friday Fun homophones

One of the homophones many of my clients and many people struggle with is:

Their, There, They’re

If you struggle to know the difference between their, there and they’re, I’ve found that using pictures to show the difference has helped many clients.

THEIR shows ownership and is usually connected to people. 🧍‍♂️
"Visit their showroom. The display of their product is excellent."

THERE shows location or to show that something exists. ⤵️
"I put the file over there, do you see it?"
"There are some excellent coaches who write inspiring content."

THEY'RE is a contraction for they + are. 🎈
"They’re providing services for English learners."

𝟑 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲

As a leader, your listeners will rarely tell you that they don’t understand you, but you may be hearing, “Could you repeat that again, please?”

Or they are leaning their face forward and blinking their eyes.

Or they are pushing their hair behind their ears to indicate they want to hear you better.

You’ll rarely be told directly that people don’t understand you but you may already be experiencing these:

𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠:
Mispronunciation might result in confusion in conversations, slowing down discussions and could mean you miss out on important connections or lucrative deals.

𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Mispronunciation gives an unclear message when someone speaks.

When expressing ideas or providing updates, unclear pronunciation means time is wasted repeating and clarifying.

This not only reduces productivity as people are unclear about their course of action but can cause frustration and lack of trust.

𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲:
Executives and managers serve as brand ambassadors for their organizations.

If clients and other partners cannot understand your message, it can hurt your professional credibility and your company’s reputation.

You know you can do your job, you know your expertise, but because people cannot understand you and your message, the result is a loss of time and money.

You may not have been told directly that your pronunciation is causing conflict and frustration but if you look carefully, you’ll be able to notice the signs.

Want to stop losing time and money?

Reach out to me if you’ve noticed the signs.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐛𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡

One question many of clients ask is, “How do I increase my vocabulary quickly?”

My answer is simple:
READ

The answer is difficult to hear until they know why.

Let me tell you my story.

I started learning English when I was almost 6 years old. My family had emigrated to the UK a few months before I was dropped, with little preparation, into a classroom.

I probably knew the words ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. I certainly didn’t know the word ‘toilet’ or ‘bathroom’ as we would say in Canada, as one of my clearest memories from that first day, was squatting on the floor and using body language to demonstrate my need.

And yet, by the age of 9, I had caught up with my peers and in many ways surpassed them.

How?

As soon as I learned to read, I devoured books. I read through the entire primary school bookcase.

Then the head teacher gave permission for me to borrow books from the middle school library.

She suggested to my parents to take me to the city library.

What a magical world that opened!

I didn’t know it then.

But looking back now, I realise that the books which fueled my imagination and allowed me to live countless other lives, were also my instructors, the teachers of my learning.

Reading will:
🔑 broaden your vocabulary
🔑 develop a variety of sentence structures
🔑 introduce you to words in context
🔑 model how another writer has used the words in a sentence and in context
🔑 make learning vocabulary easier and faster than from any list
🔑 show you how to use idioms and figurative language.

How do you increase your vocabulary?

Anyone want to get frostbite in the mountains?

Noone told me that my face could freeze.

Noone told me that there was such a cold as minus 40 with the windchill.

Noone told me that I wasn’t meant to wait for the bus at that temperature.

Noone told me that when it’s really cold the bus will be late.

Noone told me I could miss work at that temperature.

Noone told me that in 2 days it would be plus 1 again and everything could wait until then.

The thrills of arriving in Calgary as a new immigrant.

What were some of your challenges when arriving in a new country?

Mud was overflowing the top of her tiny yellow wellies and going inside her boots!

“Oh no! Now what do I do?”

I was on a winter walk with my 2 goddaughters and I’d taken them into a wood that we often visited.

But this time the mud on the path was deep and thick and sticky. The 2-year-old in the yellow wellies turned her anxious face back towards me and gave a little whimper as the mud seeped into her Wellington boot.

I made an instant decision.

I picked her up, sighed over the mud spreading over my coat and taking her 5-year-old sister by the hand, we clambered through the bushes, slid down a slope and out into an open field.

To this day, I have no idea why I didn’t head back along the path, but that’s the wisdom of hindsight.

Years later, the older one said to me, “It was scary. I didn’t know what was happening and where we were going, but I trusted you and I trusted you knew.”

𝙄𝙩'𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙂𝙤𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙢𝙮 𝙗𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨.

So often there are moments in business when we don’t know what’s happening and where we are going. The unknown feels risky and unpredictable.

But I know a God who holds the past, the present and the future. I do not trust in the circumstances; I trust in him as a person.

I say to him, “I don’t know what’s happening but I trust you and I trust that you know.”

What’s your opinion?

Should language learning focus on grammar or functional language?

I don’t remember how I learned English as a child.

I was a sponge soaking it up, absorbing it.

On my first day at school in England, I remember the overwhelming confusion and fear of being in a classroom where no-one understood me and I could understand no-one.

A few months later, I remember translating for my mother to my next-door neighbour and chatting with my new English friends.

When I started learning French in middle school, we were taught grammar rules, lists of vocabulary and a little bit of functional language. I learned very little French in 7 years.

But when I went out to India as an adult, I used a method of learning that was much more effective.

For one month, I lived in a village where no one spoke English. But I learned whole sentences of the local language and repeatedly practised the sentences with any villagers who were willing to help.

But I found as an adult I couldn’t absorb the language without asking, “Why? Why? Why?”

Eventually, I found a teacher who could explain why.

So, I learned the functional language with the villagers and the grammar with my teacher.

After one month, I was able to function in the shops, at the post office and in basic conversation.

Many of my clients come to me asking for more grammar and vocabulary. Because of my experience in learning a foreign language, I teach them a strong foundation in grammar and vocabulary WHILE they tell me their stories.

What’s your opinion?

Do you focus on learning grammar or functional language or both?

What advice would you give to your younger self?

It’s probably advice that will help others too.

What advice would I give to my younger self?

To the little 5-year-old leaving Hong Kong and her grandmother:

💃 “It’s going to be OK. People will come into your life to love you and look out for you.”

To the 10-year-old who struggled to translate for the doctor and her mother:

💃”It’s going to be OK. Your mum will live a long life and you will grow in your understanding of English so much that you will teach it.”

To the 17-year-old trying to pass her driving test:

💃”It’s going to be OK. It would be a good idea to learn to parallel park earlier on. And reverse slowly, it will save problems later.”

To the 25-year-old watching her friends find love and get married and feeling decidedly 'on the shelf':

💃”It’s going to be OK. It was your best decision to wait for God to bring him along. I know you don’t want to hear this, but learning to be patient forms character and you will learn who truly fulfills your soul.”

To the 30-year-old crying at night in a new job in a strange, new country:

💃”It’s going to be OK. You will learn to love this country, the sights, the sounds, the smells and these people so much that when it is time to leave, your heart will break.”

To the 40-something-year-old swamped in snow in yet another strange new country:

💃”It’s going to be OK. You’ll eventually be able to stand outside in minus 20 degrees and you’ll see the beauty in the white landscape."

What advice would you give to your younger self?

If you desire to work in an English-speaking country or to become an executive in a multinational company and you are not confident your English is a high enough level, I suggest you take action now.

Waiting until 1 week before an important interview isn’t the best plan of action.

Here are 5 decisions you can make:

🌍 Create S.M.A.R.T goals for the long term – What do you want, when do you want them? Then create S.M.A.R.T goals for short term tasks.

🌏 Assess your current language proficiency level and set clear, realistic goals for improvement. Some professions may have certain language benchmark requirements (IELTS, CELPIP, CEFR).

🌍 Decide what you need to work on first. Breaking down a large task into smaller steps creates a “can-do” attitude. “You can eat an elephant one small bite at a time.”

🌏Create a Study Schedule that fits your daily routine. Set 10 minute tasks that you can do in the bathroom, while preparing a meal, commuting to work as well as blocks of time to study and practise. Creating consistent habits is key to being able to improve.

🌍 Get feedback and reassess your goals regularly. This may include hiring a professional language tutor or coach who can coach you in the best methods for learning, hold you accountable and provide feedback and assessment.

What decisions would you add?

Do you make decisions based on your immediate circumstances or do you make them based on where you want to be 1 year, 3 years, 5 or 10 years from now?

My husband and I often step into situations to explain differences in culture.

He's Indian.

I'm Hong Kong, British Chinese and we live in Canada.

So many culture clashes happen in our home but we also have a unique understanding of some human conflicts.

Business communication is changing.

Culture is crossing borders and merging lines.

There’s no simple manual to East West differences.

So how do you communicate across culture:

Here are 5 important keys to develop smooth intercultural communication:

🔑 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲!
Your international team member doesn’t set out to be intentionally rude. What is considered rude can be different in different countries.

🔑 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 “𝗬𝗼𝘂” 𝗼𝗿 “𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲” 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀.
These terms can be divisive when pointing out cultural differences.

🔑 𝗔𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀’ 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀.
Encourage colleagues to share their food on special feast days. We all love to share what has meaning to us.

🔑 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀
which may not be understood.

🔑 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 and to illustrate international, universal themes that we can all understand.

What would you add?

10/24/2023

Do you want to share your ideas across cultures?

"Can you explain this to your mum," asked the doctor.

I hesitated.

I stumbled.

I was 10 years old and my mother was ill. I was her translator but at 10, my medical vocabulary in Hakka (Chinese dialect) was limited. Then, taking a deep breath, using simple words and many explanations, I was able to be the bridge between the doctor and my mum.

The world today needs people who have more than one language, understand more than one culture and can bridge the gap between companies and countries.

Nowadays, my husband and I often step into situations to explain differences in culture. He's Indian, I'm Hong Kong, British Chinese and we live in Canada.

Do you have a dream of being an international bridge and thought leader?

If you are an entrepreneur or executive leader with a high level of English, you are well on your way to being that person. But business communication is changing.

You also need to build skills that will improve your storytelling and summarising so that your communication is clear and concise and your explanations engage your reader's attention. You need to learn to write in short, rhythmic sentences that attract and not long, involved sentences that repel.

Do you want to bridge cultures?

How do you do it?

An absolute classic. Do you agree that this makes a man?

"If" is a famous poem written by Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1910 as part of his collection called "Rewards and Fairies." The poem offers a set of inspirational guidelines for living a noble and honorable life, emphasizing the virtues of patience, perseverance, self-confidence, and integrity.

The poem is written as a father's advice to his son, imparting wisdom on how to navigate the challenges and complexities of life. Kipling explores various scenarios and situations, presenting the reader with a series of hypothetical conditions and how to respond to them.

The central theme of the poem revolves around maintaining a balanced perspective in the face of adversity, staying determined in the pursuit of one's goals, and displaying moral fortitude. Kipling emphasizes the importance of maintaining composure, taking responsibility for one's actions, and learning from failures.

Throughout the poem, Kipling highlights the qualities that make a person truly virtuous, including the ability to trust oneself while remaining humble, to persevere through hardships without losing hope, to treat success and failure with equanimity, to control one's emotions, and to have the capacity to forgive.

How do you reach the highest proficiency in communicating in English?

My Asian and LatAm clients are already advanced-level speakers of English but they want more.

When it comes to improving proficiency in English, there are two types of people.

BRAVE CHAMPIONS: “I don’t care how correct my English is, I’m going to write and speak anyway.”

CAREFUL PERFECTIONISTS: “I want to be as correct as possible. I don’t want people to judge how well I can do my job because of my English.”

I admire both because I know how hard it is to learn a second or third language.

But I’ve noticed one thing brave champions and careful perfectionists have in common.

VISION!

To become as proficient as they want to be in English, they need vision.

They need to be able to visualise what they can achieve with proficient English. If they don’t visualise it, they lose motivation quickly.
