Canada Announces Temporary Measures to Support Haitians Affected by Security Crisis

Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced temporary measures to support family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who have left Haiti, as well as Haitian nationals already in Canada who are currently unable to return home.

Starting May 23, 2024, Haitians with valid temporary resident status in Canada can apply for a study permit, open work permit, or status extension at no cost. This includes foreign national family members, regardless of nationality, who arrived as temporary residents through assisted departures out of Haiti. Additionally, three months of Interim Federal Health Program coverage will be available to those eligible.

On March 19, 2024, the immigration minister released the updated regulations for open work permits for spouses of international students, which have been released and are effective immediately for new applicants. Notably, there is a broader range of eligible programs than initially anticipated. It's important to note that these changes do not pertain to spouses seeking to renew existing spousal work permits. The eligible programs now encompass the following:

- Master’s or doctoral programs at universities or polytechnic institutions; OR
- Specific professional degree programs at universities, including:
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS, DMD)
- Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor (LLB, JD, BCL)
- Doctor of Medicine (MD)
- Doctor of Optometry (OD)
- Pharmacy (PharmD, BS, BSc, BPharm)
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN, BSN, BNSc)
- Bachelor of Education (B. Ed.)

• May supervise drafters and others on the architectural team.

Education and Experience Requirements:
• Completion of 2-3 year college program in architectural technology or a related subject is required.
• Registration with Certified Technicians and Technologists Association of Manitoba is an asset, the Riverbend Building Supply Ltd will assist with the certification process.
• Minimum 2 years of work experience may be supervised before certification.
• Ability to work in a team, be organized and willing to take initiative with effective interpersonal skills.
• Good work ethic, self-motivated and excellent communication skills.

BREAKING NEWS: Canada to launch new economic pathway for skilled refugees and displaced individuals! The government is expanding the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot (EMPP) to help employers hire skilled refugees and other displaced individuals in key occupations, including nursing, engineering, teaching, and tourism.

The EMPP will now include a more flexible approach to eligibility, allowing other displaced people in need of international protection to apply.

This initiative allows Canada to welcome vulnerable people while giving employers access to an untapped talent pool to address labour shortages and help grow our economy. More details on the new federal pathway will be available on the EMPP webpage in the coming weeks.
