Little garden update.

Things are starting to show some signs of life. This year I have been definitely stressed about things not growing and being way behind. But I’m trying to be hopeful that we will have a long warm fall and things will work out in the end.

But the real question is about the garden: what should I do with all the scapes?!

Hello Friends

It’s been a hot minute since I did an introduction post, and with so many new faces that have arrived it was due.

Twelve years ago, if you’d told me I’d trade my city high-rise for a farmhouse nestled along side the riverbanks among golden wheat fields and towering grain bins, I would’ve laughed. Yet here I am, a former city girl who fell in love with a fifth-generation farmer and moved back to the very land where he was raised.

Now, our days are filled with the chaos of raising three kids, tending to our 4 dogs, 4 cats, 20 hens, and more cattle than I ever imagined. Every day brings new adventures, from teaching our children the value of hard work as they help with farm chores and 4H projects, to the quiet moments hanging out at the river.. just kidding way is quiet with these three wild kids.

Four years ago, something shifted. I took a hard look at our food system and realized how disconnected and reliant we were on it, and where most of us had no idea of the source of what was on our plates. This awakening ignited a passion in me - for growing our own food, for understanding the intricacies of sustainable farming, and for sharing our family’s farm-raised beef with fellow Albertans.

You’ll find a bit of everything here - the triumphs of a successful harvest and the challenges of unpredictable weather. I’ll take you along as we cook meals straight from our pastures and garden, build my dream greenhouse, and navigate the sometimes muddy, always rewarding path of farm life.

But this page is more than just a window into our world. It’s a place to connect, to learn, and to grow together. I want to share the story behind your food, to show you the care and dedication that goes into ethical, sustainable farming. And in the process, I’ll open up about how this life has transformed me, shaping our family’s values and the way we’re raising our kids - so different from my own city upbringing.

Whether you’re here out of curiosity about farm life, a desire to know your local farmers, or just for the occasional adorable calf picture.

I’d love to hear what brought you here?

Garden update:

Feeling a little better today after building a box for my sweet peas and larkspurs. Last year, I tried to grow sweet peas but ended up killing them while hardening them off. This year, I’m counting it as a win just getting them into the garden!

There’s still so much left to do, which includes planted 60 tomatoes plants. But it’s Alberta in May and the weather has not cooperated. The rain has been so welcome after years of drought, but it’s also put many projects on hold, along with the freezing weather. I’m hoping that after all the rain in the forecast this week, I can get the boxes built and spend a weekend constructing the greenhouse. Until then, just dreaming of summer in the garden.

What is something exciting you planted/planting into the garden this year?

Who would’ve thought a reel about my greenhouse would spark so much interest in our staircase?

Let me clarify: while our staircase may look extravagant from afar, it’s far from perfect up close. When we bought this home, the staircase was in rough shape, covered in worn-out carpet and remnants of past renovations. I painted the balusters to cover up the old paint and swapped out the carpet for a sleek black plywood finish. But look closely, and you’ll notice missing balusters, unfinished paint spots and bits of carpet still lingering underneath. It’s a work in progress, folks.

I have big dreams for this grand staircase, but it’s just not been our focus yet.

Another frigid day on the farm at -40°C with windchill, but there’s a silver lining on the horizon—tomorrow, the promise of a warming trend begins. The biting cold may not be inviting, but oh, that clear blue sky and sunshine paint a portrait of resilience and hope. Here’s to finding beauty even in the coldest moments and looking forward to the warmth creeping in.

Stay warm, farm friends!

Farm kids have more fun.

November is here and most of the snow has melted. It has been a good week to get outside with the kids and start working with their steers. Getting back into the routine of feeding animals morning and night again. Need to soak up these warmer November days before winter returns to the farm.

Would you love to follow along with all the hard work the kids will be doing?

Wrapped up day two at the last night. Spent the day shopping without the kiddos and finished off with a great rodeo set.

You making it out this weekend?

Day one at the CFR was a total success! From shopping the market to the kids cheering from the stands for their first experience at the rodeo. Had a long but great day.

If you were there today did you wear your plaid?!

See ya tomorrow ✌🏻

Today was busy just like everyday around the farm in the fall.

Collecting eggs, picking tomatoes, canning pizza sauce, tidying up the house, trying out a new style of pants I’ve never worn before, making dinner and going for a test in the combine.

What did you get up to today?

Today was a full day of firsts of the farm.

First day of it truly feeling like fall. Plants are starting to show signs of their lives declining. So Ada, myself and the cats spent some time picking all the beans in the garden.

First day of school for the big kids. One being their last first day of elementary. I’m not sure I am ok about that one.

The first last year with just myself and Ada at home together before she joins the big kids in the school next fall.

First test was taken in the field to see if harvest can begin. Then the first thing to be broken happened.

Any first days for you today?

We haven’t purchased eggs in 6 months now and let me tell you not only is collection these rainbow beauties everyday amazing. But knowing where they come from and the food our hens eat to create these beauties is where it’s at.

Do you have chickens?
Or buy eggs from a local farm ?

If anything the last few few have thought me we need to get back to growing and supporting local and stop relying on the major food chains.

Did you know cattle ranches are a family business. Canada is home to more than 60,000 ranches/farms spread across the country!

The Canadian beef industry is among the top most environmentally responsible in the world.

At 4 kg CO2 equivalent of live weight per unit of beef production, our producers have half the carbon footprint of the global average.

93% of Canadian ranching is done on pasture and forage land, which has a minimal impact on the environment and can help store carbon.
