𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 | AGA scholars receive stipend

As part of its commitment to agricultural education and its ongoing partnership with MMSU, the AGA Academy of Canada distributed stipends to three senior agriculture students today, August 8, at the Center for Flexible Learning.

The AGA Academy Presidential Scholarship recipients, Roslyn Sampayan, Audrien Marie Tungpalan, and John Christopher Tumamao, each received PhP 26,600 for the second semester of the academic year 2023-2024. They had previously received the same amount for the first semester.

MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis expressed her gratitude for the continuous support of AGA Academy, describing how these scholarships inspire future agriculturists to strive for success. She further noted that the financial support not only alleviates the students' financial burdens but also motivates them to excel both academically and personally.

Tumamao, one of the scholars, thanked AGA Academy for the financial assistance, acknowledging that it empowers them to pursue their academic goals with greater determination. He shared that the scholarship funds help him cover expenses including his OJT, thesis, and licensure exam review.

The AGA Academy Presidential Scholarship is awarded annually to three dedicated fourth-year agriculture students. To qualify, students must have a general weighted average of no lower than 1.75 over the last two semesters and a combined annual family income of no more than PhP 400,000.

Present at the event were Dr. Mee Jay Domingo, internationalization, linkages, and partnerships director; Prof. Emil James Tanagon, Office of Student Affairs and Services director; and Prof. Krismary Sharmaine Yapo, alumni relations chief.

In 2022, MMSU and AGA Academy signed a memorandum of agreement to collaborate on internationalization initiatives to enhance education and community engagement. The AGA Academy is led by its Chief Executive Officer and President, Abelita L. Villanueva, who is also an MMSU alumna. The university is the first Philippine university to partner with the Canada-based academy.

Ms. Abelita “Abby” L. Villanueva, President-CEO of AGA Academy in Canada, sponsored the exterior painting of the two-storey academic building at the College of Agriculture, Food, and Sustainable Development (CAFSD) Dingras Campus.

Dr. Sosima Demandante, program coordinator of the CAFSD-Dingras campus, expressed her gratitude and shared how Ms. Villanueva's sponsorship became possible. “Through Ms. Abby Villanueva, an alumna of the Diploma in Agricultural Technology and Bachelor in Agricultural Technology (DAT-BAT) program, we initiated the exterior painting and landscaping of the two-storey academic building on January 22, 2024,” she said.

The two-storey academic building houses two computer laboratories, including the Center for Flexible Learning, which is fully equipped with two air conditioning units and ten computers for online classes, providing an optimal environment for online learning.

This initiative aligns with MMSU’s 7-point agenda of establishing a vibrant, engaging, culturally focused university campus. It also serves as a testament to the enduring bonds between MMSU and its alumni.

In 2022 and 2023, MMSU agriculture students received scholarship grants from AGA Academy. The AGA Academy Presidential Scholarship helps deserving regular 4th year students taking BS Agriculture with a general weighted average of not lower than 1.75 and coming from low-income families.
