PPE extends beyond the gear for metal fabricators 01/25/2024

Searching for the right personal protective equipment often means selecting gloves, breathing protection, or even personal monitoring devices for yourself or your colleagues. But it also means monitoring the awareness and attitudes toward the safety of your entire workplace—or maybe adopting a new overall ethos of personnel safety altogether.

“The No. 1 thing is they need to take an individual approach,” Hubregtse said. “One of the bigger challenges in the industry is there tends to be a one-size-fits-all approach in a number of different ways, from a regulatory framework but also [in] company policy.”

For employees in a fabrication shop or factory, protective eyewear, ear protection, and cut- and fire-resistant gloves are often everyday must-haves. One of the latest advances in gloves are Milwaukee Tool’s high-dexterity nitrile dipped gloves in ANSI/ISEA cut levels 6, 7, 8, and 9.
These gloves and others on the market not only protect welders and people handling parts with sharp edges, but they also enable users to use touchscreens without sacrificing protection in the process. The gloves feature a reinforced nitrile coating between the thumb and index finger and are made of an 18-ga. material, which allows people wearing them to complete smaller tasks without removing them.

Though many pieces of gear are ubiquitous—one thinks of gloves in a welding shop—PPE is not a one-size-fits-all enterprise, especially when it comes to head and face gear.

“There can be a challenge with respirator use and safety glass use at the same time—sometimes that can be difficult, depending on the fit and size of the person’s face,” Ferrian said. “Maybe the individual only needs a half-mask respirator to protect against the contaminants, but we may go to a full-face respirator if they’re not able to effectively wear the half mask and the safety glasses at the same time, because the full-face respirator provides that eye protecti

Katy Robinson is spearheading a PPE campaign targeting the Yorkshire construction sector. Here, she explains its origin, the progress made, and why there is still much to do.

As a woman who’s been working in the construction industry for over half a decade, it’s no surprise that it took six years for me to receive PPE, designed for women. It also took six years for me to discover that PPE designed for women was even available on the market!

Narrowing the welding PPE gap for women in fabrication 01/22/2024

Women make up only about 5% of the welding workforce, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number is growing, though, as is the number of companies and businesses catering to these skilled professionals. While improvements have been made to make women welders safe on the job, PPE manufacturers, distributors, and employers have a long way to go to eliminate one of the largest barriers for women welders: properly fitting PPE.

VIP lane PPE suppliers were paid a whopping 80% more per unit than other suppliers by the UK Government, an investigation by the Good Law Project has found.

The group says that internal documents from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) revealed some contracts awarded to politically connected suppliers were agreed at more than four times the average unit price.

https://www.thenational.scot/news/23983028.vip-lane-ppe-suppliers-paid-almost-double-amount-per-unit/

I get the supply & demand argument some people may make but during the pandemic, it was crazy, especially knowing the actual cost of goods. A shortage of supply and exponentially increased demand caused a spike in raw material costs along with increased shipping costs and prices indeed rose but these so-called "politically connected" suppliers (many of whom never supplied PPE or any medical goods to anyone prior to the pandemic) took it to another level, that can only be described as price gouging. Many of these suppliers, reaped huge monetary gains and bought homes, cars and other extravagant purchases, so it was often not the manufacturers who committed these acts (but manufacturers had their own fraudulent activities as well) . Often the goods that these politically connected suppliers provided was not to spec, had no approvals or worse-yet, those approvals were fraudulent... where was the checks and balances? Crazy is one thing; but this was just insane.

Most Canadian businesses that answered federal and provincial calls during the pandemic to build up a domestic sector for personal protective equipment have collapsed.

The association that represents Canadian PPE companies says 90 per cent of those businesses have been forced to close or pivot to other industries because the federal government and Ontario have given contracts to a massive American company and a Quebec operation.

“We’ve got an industry that is just running on fumes,” Barry Hunt, the president of the Canadian Association of PPE Manufacturers, said in an interview.

“Most of them are out of business and the ones that aren’t out of business are going out of business quickly.”

“There was a promise to procure at the end and that has never happened,” said Hunt, whose association has 15 companies remaining as members.

It's the same in many jurisdictions...The govt put out a call for help to procure PPE and those who answered (often investing alot of money and resources) got exactly nothing from the govt. What we need is accountability from these govt individuals who put out the call for help and later just awarded all contracts to the big and established companies who actually let them down to begin with... Crazy (and just wrong)

It never ceased to amaze me, the shear amount of fraudulent activity that took place during the pandemic...but then I thought, this should actually be an indication of what goes on all the time... is it the norm rather than just an anomaly? Just think about how much fraud has occurred before and likely continually after the pandemic....the pandemic only shown the light on this activity but maybe it was always there?

“default male” PPE is a problem across many industries, but it is particularly egregious when it comes to healthcare, because this workforce is female-dominated (67% of healthcare workers globally are female). And in the context of a deadly pandemic, we should have been listening to that female-dominated workforce when they started raising the alarm.

HV.1 is a subvariant of Omicron, and it's rapidly becoming the most prevalent variant in the country, according to data from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) that was updated on Nov. 14. At the start of September, HV. 1 made up 4.4 per cent of reported cases, until it ballooned to 34.2 per cent in early November.

"This is kind of what we should maybe expect to be our new normal for cold and flu season going forward."

While both experts agree HV.1 shouldn't create concerns about causing more severe disease, they also say it's important to avoid COVID-19 entirely.

People who are at risk of bad COVID-19 outcomes should be the most vigilant about staying healthy. That includes people who are older, pregnant people, anyone living with a chronic medical condition or those who are immunocompromised.

Covid is going to be like influenza and it looks to be around continually but we are (hopefully) beyond the lock-downs and quarantines of the past. Just stay vigilant and if you are in the category of high risk for more severe outcomes, then just be more careful and safe when going out.

Covid inquiry to examine PPE procurement after revelations Australia got 46m unusable masks 12/12/2023

The head of Australia’s Covid inquiry has signalled her panel will examine the procurement of PPE after revelations that a $100m deal with a relatively obscure online retailer left the government with 46m unusable masks.

The Guardian revealed on Wednesday that the former government had signed two contracts with the online retailer named ABM to supply Australia with 50m masks and 7m gowns during the early months of the pandemic.

ABM had little apparent pre-pandemic experience in supplying PPE and had predominantly sold massage guns, bedding, air fryers and robot vacuum cleaners before winning the work through limited tender.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/nov/09/covid-inquiry-to-examine-ppe-procurement-after-revelations-australia-got-46m-unusable-masks

This was the problem, no? There was little to no checks and balances and vetting of so-called suppliers before these government procurement people went ahead and placed millions of dollars worth of PPE. How did this happen? Many point to the crazy marketplace conditions during covid but I'd argue there was probably much more malfeasance happening because these people who placed orders and signed off on purchase orders were professionals. There has always been rigid checks and balances when procuring from any supplier/ manufacturer, especially when we are talking millions of dollars. Experienced procurement professionals would never just put trust in suppliers who do not have a history in supplying the products in question. More often than not, alarm bells would have rung endlessly and these buyers would not have issued orders, sent high value order deposits or issued any sized orders without more proof (samples, references, inspections and more favourable/ safe payment terms and methods)... to ignore very basic procurement procedures was asking for trouble and if the marketplace was super crazy (which it was) then all the more reason to utilize tried and trusted procurement procedures....

TRU hosts PPE showcase to bolster trades inclusivity 12/05/2023

“As many as 20 per cent of our students are women,” notes Pooni. “We are four to five times the national average of people participating in trades.”

And with more female workers, the need for inclusive sizing has also grown. Having safe PPE is just one aspect of the work, but for women who have made do with improper gear, it’s a big part of making the trades feel more accessible to others.

“I have really gotten the chance to see the industry change — and not just in seeing more women, but in seeing men be more open to having a woman leader,” adds Klie.

It is true that more and more women are moving into trades and we should be aware that PPE for them, can be very different than for men. Personal Protection Equipment must evolve to meet these challenges and grow the trades industry.

Government lost control of Covid in March 2020, BMA says 11/28/2023

The BMA also criticised the government for taking too long to properly implement actions to reduce the spread of Covid-19. It said that, despite its own recommendations, interventions such as cancelling mass gatherings and introducing face masks came too late and were lifted too early.

tanton said that, contrary to evidence previously heard by the inquiry, BMA members did not have enough suitable PPE (if they had any at all) during the first few months of the pandemic.

“Doctors and other healthcare staff did not have the PPE that was needed,” he said. “It not only put them at physical risk from Covid-19 but also affected their mental health and well being.”

Stanton also urged the inquiry to consider evidence suggesting that a government decision to prioritise costs over safety lead to a lack of respiratory protective equipment, which provides healthcare workers with greater protection against airborne viruses.

Innovative Solutions for Workplace Safety: Vision AI and PPE Detection 11/14/2023

Before the development of smart cameras and AI algorithms, workplace safety was predominantly about instinct and caution. As industrialization ramped up, the clamor for safer working environments led to the birth of PPE.

From rudimentary leather gloves and basic eye shields to sophisticated respiratory protection gear, the evolution of PPE traces the human endeavor to create safer work habitats. In grasping this historical context, we can marvel at how Vision AI elevates this legacy.

Rishi Sunak has not written off £14.9 billion in PPE fraud - Full Fact 11/07/2023

A string of posts on social media have claimed that Rishi Sunak wrote off £14.9 billion lost to personal protective equipment (PPE) fraud.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) posted on 11 September: “Rishi Sunak has decided that the £14.9bn of PPE fraud cannot be investigated and has written it all off.”

This post has been shared thousands of times, while similar claims have also been posted by other X users and on Facebook.

We have found no evidence that £14.9 billion has been lost or written off in PPE fraud.

The DHSC’s annual accounts for 2021/22 say that an assessment of “high-risk” PPE contracts was carried out, covering 28% of the total PPE contracts awarded. This assessment identified a 1.7% “risk of loss” from fraud and error, with a value of around £38.4 million in those contracts.

https://fullfact.org/health/covid-ppe-fraud-rishi-sunak/

It's crazy enough that governments had issues with fraudulent procurement of PPE, poor quality of the goods and price gouging, but now they are actually arguing about the extent of the problem after the fact. All this points to the ineptitude of the politicians, the civil servants who were tasked with this and the process overall. Or perhaps there is now a cover-up to protect those people who perpetrated this criminal activity on the tax payers.

in my opinion, much of this could have been avoided if govts made an effort to grow domestic manufacturing in strategic industries such as PPE and medical equipment, like they are now trying to do with semiconductors, rechargeable battery technologies and other Hi Tech products. I would say the old adage of "Live and Learn" would be appropriate, except now that the pandemic has eased and things return to relative normalcy, our politicians and other govt officials are abandoning their rhetoric of building a thriving domestic PPE manufacturing base and going back to the old ways. It's crazy that they openly encouraged entrepreneurs to dive in and build state of the art domestic PPE factories and are now abandoning them and going back to offshore manufacturers and suppliers. To be clear; there are international suppliers who are qualified and capable of supplying high quality and cost effective products and they are more than able to produce On Time, On Spec and On Budget. But the problem is when (and there will be more moments of severe need for PPE supplies) we face another pandemic that procuring the PPE from offshore suppliers will again prove to be a daunting issue. Knowing this, countries need to prepare and build domestic manufacturing and support these companies both now and into the future; or we will not have learned from our past mistakes. Let's be strategic about this going forward and not set us up for another failure and more waste of tax payer monies.

PPE was donated to the Boy Scouts of Maui from Direct Relief, a nonprofit from California, Evans said. There were also donations shipped to them from Scout units from all over the U.S.
The agencies involved with the cleanup and reentry process requested 26,000 kits. Evans said she is not sure if they will hit the 26,000 goal but figures they will be close to that number.
She said she has had two “magnificent volunteers” — Jamie Wright, who helped Evans procure, take inventory and track all of the PPE that was being shipped to Maui, and Glenn Kitagawa, who helped with coordinating shipments, moving and logistics and warehousing.

Prof Richter says it is now time to start thinking of Covid more like flu, where new forms of the disease, some worse than others, appear every year and new vaccines are rolled out for the latest winter strain.

Covid will still be a problem for the most vulnerable, she adds, and hospitals, which will still need to deal with new infection waves.

"We have bad flu years and good flu years," she says.

"There's a good chance that once every four or five years, we're going to have a bad dose [of Covid] and we are going to need to go to bed for a few days, otherwise most of the time, for most of us, I think it will be OK."
