IoT North Conference
A two-day conference and exhibition that will address a variety of topics in relation to IoT.
What does a company that has been around for 45 years of change have to say about future proofing your business? Naseem Bashir, Executive Chair at Williams Engineering Canada Inc offers his insights into the risk involved in investing in technology to avoid losing to competition as the business landscape evolves.
Here is what he had to say:
π Communication challenges between directors and management: Directors often don't understand technology, and how its going to work. Additionally, trusting management teams to deploy new technologies is always a question. How do we bridge this gap?
π Organizations are built into silos, and designed to resist change. We need to be able to identify these challenges in our business to be able to successful and efficiently integrate technological solutions into our businesses.
π Risk tolerance is very different depending on your culture. Currently, Americans are better at change than we are in Canada. We need to be able to build flexible organizations.
Bashir spoke alongside other business leaders at IoT North Conference 2023.
What does the future of healthcare, spacetech, and education have in common? Alberta.
Our first panel of the conference just kicked off the show and got the conversation going about what to expect out of the disruptive technologies transforming industries, and how Alberta is slowly becoming a major player on an international level.
Our speakers ignited enthusiasm among us by delving into some of the exciting things happening in their industries:
π Drivers of Innovation and Acceleration: Problem solving with end users in mind and building community. Industries like healthcare and education need to focus building solutions around problems, and have their end users in mind. Additionally, building ecosystems of community to solve larger problems is a must. Isolation amongst industry slows the progress of tackling big industry and societal challenges.
π Alberta as a global leader. Alberta is being chosen as the home by our successful speakers and organizations for its tight community that facilitates ecosystem growth and connections with important people, the political-will to nurture scale-ups and start-ups, and something we take for granted: the support and willingness from community to want to support up and coming entrepreneurs and organizations - something that you should leverage!
β‘ We've seen the transformation of other successful cities in the world like Dubai make big changes to how they're perceived by the world (eg. tourism and sports for Dubai); Alberta needs to have it's turn with tech.
π The importance of building community: A lot of the success of the emerging companies in Alberta is owed to connections built either through strategic partnerships, community, and even their own community platforms. Companies need to start building communities and relationships in their industries to continue building off of the accelerating nature of these relationships. community building is what helps solve big problems and fast.π
These are only a snippet of everything said on stage this morning. Our speakers also spoke about the specific technologies helping spacetech become a viable investment for any industry, education and healthcare accessibility for the whole world, and more!
More to come! Stay tuned for more updates!
Is your business ready to navigate the rapidly evolving business landscape?
π¨ Today is your last chance to register for IoT North Conference, where we will answer this question for you and many more.
We caught up with Jade Alberts, VP of Canadian Blockchain Consortium, and Founder of Peer Guidance, to ask him some questions about the impact of innovative technologies and how theyβll affect Canadian industry, and to learn what heβs looking forward to at this yearβs IoT North Conference.
Jade will be one of our MC's at the conference happening in Calgary on Nov 21 & 22.
π Can you provide insights into how emerging technologies (IoT, AI, Automation, 5G, Edge, etc) are impacting industries and how the business landscape will evolve with the widespread deployment of these technologies in Alberta and beyond?
The widespread deployment of these emerging technologies is leading to increased automation, improved data analytics, enhanced connectivity, and smarter decision-making across various industries in Alberta and beyond. However, it's essential for businesses to invest in cybersecurity and data privacy measures to mitigate associated risks. Moreover, adapting to these changes through upskilling the workforce and creating regulatory frameworks that support innovation will be crucial in navigating the evolving business landscape.
π In your experience, why is it important is it for businesses and industry to adopt, stay up-to-date with, and make the best of new technologies in 2023?
The rapidly changing technological landscape in 2023 necessitates businesses and industries to stay ahead of the curve. Failing to embrace new technologies can lead to stagnation, decreased competitiveness, and missed opportunities for growth and innovation. Adapting to and harnessing the power of new technologies is essential for long-term success and sustainability.
π What important issues or topics are you most excited for, or hope to explore, at Iot North Conference this year?
AI, Quantum, and how we are going to adapt and regulate them, so they are instrumental in going our Alberta tech community

"Generative AI, Open Banking, and how we can leverage these technologies to benefit all Albertans" - is what Neal Isaac, Iot North Conference 2023 speaker, is excited for next week π€
We caught up with Neal Isaac, Managing Director, Technology Assurance, Data Science and Analytics at ATB Financial, to ask him some questions about the impact of innovative technologies and how theyβll affect Canadian industry, and to learn what heβs looking forward to at this yearβs IoT North Conference.
Neal will be a part of the roundtable βCybersecurity in Emerging Technologyβ at the conference happening on Nov 21 & 22.
π Can you provide insights into how emerging technologies (IoT, AI, Automation, 5G, Edge, etc) are impacting industries and how the business landscape will evolve with the widespread deployment of these technologies in Alberta and beyond?
I view IoT as the enablement infrastructure for emerging technology. As businesses seek to transform, IoT technologies are the building blocks for engaging customers and building at scale.
π In your experience, why is it important is it for businesses and industry to adopt, stay up-to-date with, and make the best of new technologies in 2023?
Keeping your technology stack up-to-date is a bigger challenge than we recognize. The key benefit is the ability to take risks wisely, such as the ability to react quickly to opportunities or threats.
π What important issues or topics are you most excited for, or hope to explore, at Iot North Conference this year?
Topics that I think are top of mind for most are Generative AI, Open Banking, and how we can leverage these technologies to benefit all Albertans.

How are emerging technologies transforming Alberta and beyond?
We caught up with Jeff Lafrenz, President of VizworX Inc., to ask him some questions about the impact of innovative technologies and how theyβll affect Canadian industry, and to learn what heβs looking forward to at this yearβs IoT North Conference.
π Can you provide insights into how emerging technologies (IoT, AI, Automation, 5G, Edge, etc.) are impacting industries and how the business landscape will evolve with the widespread deployment of these technologies in Alberta and beyond?
The number of ways in which these advanced digital technologies can and are already impacting industry is almost impossible to fully list. However, some of the key areas include:
β’ Work force enhancements: making people better informed, better connected and more effective at their jobs.
β’ Automation: improved efficiency through automation of routine tasks
β’ Sensing: increased ability to gather the base data from which improved decisions can be made
β’ Training: improved ability to understand and retain knowledge not only on day-to-day activities, but also on those rare incident, critical impact scenarios that may not be encountered often, but need quick and decisive action if they do in order to minimize their impact
β’ Stakeholder engagement: improved ways to engage stakeholders from the concept phase of new infrastructure through to turn arounds. Reduced timelines, reduced costs, improved stakeholder satisfaction and many other benefits come from this.
β’ Efficiency, safety, security, training, and more.
π In your experience, why is it important is it for businesses and industry to adopt, stay up-to-date with, and make the best of new technologies in 2023?
We live in a globally competitive market. The appropriate adoption of advanced digital technologies is a competitive edge that organizations will use for their own benefits, or find being used against them by their competitors.
π What important issues or topics are you most excited for, or hope to explore, at Iot North Conference this year?
I am particularly looking forward to the cross fertilization of ideas from people coming both with interesting technology concepts and those with challenging operational needs. The networking and conversations are a key value to me in attending this conference.
