Fifteen years ... it's been fifteen entire years that Solas has existed in some format or another.

I started the biz elbows deep in soy wax - I made hand-painted pillar candles with celtic knotwork on it. I had been inspired by another artist who had since retired. They warned me that candles weren't a big money maker, but I plunged in anyway. Spoiler alert - they were not a big money maker. BUT - I learned a lot. I learned how to work with wax, and I learned to create my own silicone molds. I learned how to maintain inventory & get ready for shows. I learned that I should probably start making something much lighter to transport.

Fast-forward from 2009 to 2012-ish ....

At an Irish dance competition (or Feis) I sold my first couple of dance-themed pendants, and that was that. I had found something that was relatively easy to make in batches, was lightweight and was much cheaper to ship than a one pound wax cylinder. I also learned that just because I like something, doesn't mean it will sell. Conversely, I also discovered that Doctor Who themed merch sells like GANGBUSTERS at ren faires, which I did not see coming. However due to pesky copyright laws, I no longer sell the DW merch. I didn't realize that quotes from the show were also copyright. My bad, sincerely.

Moving forward to 2017 - I decided to take a massive gamble and date one of my oldest friends. By old I mean, we had been friends since the early 90s but are the same age 😁As it turns out, he's a pretty goddamn amazing carpenter, but I felt like his talents were not being showcased and after a couple of years watching him bust his kiester on framing & big wood stuff, I wanted to bring his expertise into the creative weirdness that is Solas.

And now, Solas has become more than I thought it would be, it is finally becoming The Main Family Breadwinner. I will admit (and I'm sure Tom will too!) that starting a carpentry business from scratch has been incredibly stressful, and do not look at our bank accounts, but it is finally coming around. We are regularly getting new clients and starting to fill in the gaps in the weekly schedule.

15 years, and still ticking.

Here's to 15 more years, and hopefully my post will be about how the business thrived, we were able to hire new young folks & train them in an incredibly valuable trade, and now it's time for retirement, other than still going to markets & shows as time permits.

This little leaf-shaped wooden sword is one of my personal favourites. Tom makes these from MDF. He shapes, paints & waxes them for a beautiful smooth finish. The handles are wrapped tightly with paracord, yet another knack he’s discovered!

I tell ya, he’s gonna be super handy in a zombie apocalypse.

These are some protoype items from Tom's workshop, which are evolving into new, better boxes in the next few days. We are looking at adding velvet flocking to the box interiors as well as adding some quality felt feet.

The swords are something Tom is really proud of, and the closest he can currently get to making his own right now. I don't think a forge would go over well with the neighbours!

Tom and I are off today, and by that I mean doing some improvements around the home office 😂 I picked up some h**p straw (shoutout to Hempalta) and was working on getting it onto my garden beds. Our new dog decided the straw was the best thing ever to drag around, so now I’m basically “needlefelting” it into the soil 🤣

Dogs will always find the flaw in your plan, much like a toddler. With pointier teeth.

I absolutely love how these frames work with my embroidery!

Tom made this MDF & painted frame for my latest 4” diameter embroidery pieces to hang around the house. I think they look incredible! This prototype was brush painted but Tom has since set up his sprayer and I’m excited to see how the next generation turns out. He’s always looking for ways to improve his final product.

I designed this Canadian celtic knot many years ago, but never got around to digitizing it for a proper logo. I wanted to create something that was unique, something that would represent the artistic side and creativity of Solas, while showing that we are proudly Canadian. I think I nailed it on this!

What does Tom the master carpenter do when he’s not working on someone’s house?

Make jigs, as it turns out. This is a jig he made from cutoffs to help with adding splines to frame or box corners.

He’s a super handy guy to have on your apocalypse team!

This aspen and walnut shadow box was just picked up by our latest happy client!
