I was chatting with a Massage Therapist from one of Alberta’s Hutterite Colonies today. Linda was quite worried about one of her hands as she was displaying symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Tender, warm, swollen joints. Joint stiffness that is usually worse in the mornings and after inactivity. Fatigue, fever and loss of appetite during flare ups.
We chatted about Home care!!
Muscle Check application and a few gentle exercises.

1) Place your hand flat on a surface, spread the fingers out sideways, and then bring them back together.
2) Make a loose fist and open then open your fingers to fully straighten them, repeating this several times on each hand.
3)Place your wrist on the edge of a table, with the hand free to hang down. Keeping the fingers relaxed, raise the hand until you feel a stretch, then slowly lower it.
From the same position, turn the hand so that the thumb faces upward. Raise and lower the hand, as if waving.
These are easy and quick self-care things you can do at home. Resent keeping the pain and inflammation down with Muscle Check and easy gentle movement will do wonders.

This is why it works, and why it LASTS!!!

Did you know that Muscle Check was originally formulated as a creamy lotion?
… I originally put our plant based anti inflammatories and pain relievers into a cream base.
Big Mistake👎

After testing this water based cream on Athletes in game like conditions my team of Natural Health Chemists found that the cream penetrated for approximately 12 minutes and then when the water used to make the cream warmed up with body movement it stopped penetrating. In fact it came out with the Athletes sweat.
We quickly went back into the Laboratory and put our carefully selected plant powered pain relief ingredients into pure 💯 % Alberta Bees Wax. And … the magic happened. 4-5 hours of beeswax ointment loaded with our anti inflammatories and pain killers soaked in and penetrated deep in the bodies muscle and joint tissues. The effectiveness was unbelievable!

We could now take out the artificial preservatives used in water base creams, gels and sprays. Bees Wax is one of Natures purest Natural Preservatives so we could keep our product ALL Natural and 100% Drug Free.
So glad my team did the home work together with Professional Athletes
We have proven that water base ointments do not carry ingredients deep into the body where it can get to work. Beeswax often nicknamed Natures Amoxicillin is one of our Super Star Ingredients.

If you are experiencing Sport and Arthritis pain consider heading to our website and signing up for our monthly News-Letter. Myself and my team of movement specialists will share really really practical tips that will help you experience Pain Free Movement.
👉🏻Bonus - If you sign up for our news-letter in the next 24 hours I will have my team send you a Special Savings Coupon to use towards your next Order!

Happy Labour Day Weekend, and Happy Pride Day! And, a flash contest from Muscle Check! What could make a weekend better?

💥💥Enter our Labour Day Long Weekend FLASH giveaway below!💥💥⬇️

Are you struggling with Fall on-set Back Pain? If so, this one's for you!

As the days get shorter and colder, lower backs seem to “unexpectedly” get stiff and achy.
There are a few reasons, but the NUMBER 1 reason is: As the days get shorter and colder, we are simply less active. Sustained periods of inactivity, no matter the season or reason, will cause muscles and joints to become weak and stiff.

The good news is, unlike the weather, we can control how active we choose to be throughout the Fall. Get out for a walk, short or long, just get moving.

Another effective tip is to generously apply Muscle Check Sport and Arthritis Ointment for muscle and joint pain relief.
Our Muscle Check Sport and Arthritis Pain Relief formula features powerful plant based anti inflammatory and anti oxidants, a powerful blend of Natural very concentrated pain killers set into a 100% Beeswax base.

Yes, it can really be that simple! Put on some Muscle Check, slip on a coat and go for walk!

Back to School doesn’t need to be a Pain!
**Backpacks
Your child’s backpack should weigh no more than 5 to 10% of his or her body weight. You’d be surprised to weigh some of their backpacks! Be sure it doesn’t hang more than four inches below the waistline as this helps to decrease the weight on the shoulders and bad posture when walking. Also, they think it doesn’t look as cool, but encourage them to wear BOTH straps and not just sling over one shoulder.

Have a GREAT School Year!!

A very interesting article! Your body is programmed to resist weight loss from famine (starvation diets), which often also set up irresistible cravings for nutrients that we become lacking in, especially if we eliminate a whole food group. We also, as the article says, need a lot of support, in order to deal with issues like emotional eating, being a survivor of previous abuse, and nutritional support.

Did you know?
Every ingredient in Muscle Check Sport and Arthritis Ointment has to be double certified. We have to bring in quality ingredients in order to get our NPN (Natural Product Number) licensing from Health Canada. One of the quality products we use, is pure natural Alberta bees wax which is already tested a couple of times before it comes into our lab.

Commercial soaps, shampoos, conditioners and other body care products can quite often contain harmful chemicals that can affect hormone balance, influence weight gain, affect liver and skin health, contribute towards allergies and sensitivities, and some are even carcinogenic!

While a "no shampoo" lifestyle is not for everyone, it is worthwhile to be aware of what we are exposing ourselves to. If you're not actively sweating, you can go about a week between showers/baths, with just a "pits and bits" wash daily in between. This used to be common until the 70's or so. Children certainly don't need any heavily perfumed products! Coconut oil is perfect to hydrate their skin.

What you choose to do is up to you, but be aware that you have options.

FEBRUARY WELLNESS CHALLENGE!

Starts: Monday, February 14th
Ends: Sunday, February 20th

February is Heart Health Month, as well as Valentine's Day, so I thought I would give you a chance to show yourselves some LOOOOVE!

Here's the challenge: I am asking you to pick ONE SIMPLE HABIT that will improve your wellness. It can be anything, but make it something easily do-able, that you can do every day.

An example might be to make sure you go to bed on time every night, to make sure that you are properly hydrated every day, or, to go for a walk every day, or take your vitamins. It doesn't matter how small or simple it is, just that you do it every day for the next 7 days.

If you happen to miss a day, don't beat yourself up over it. Just pick yourself up and keep going.

You can do this one small thing! You're awesome!

So, tell me what you're picking!

I would like to introduce my (Kim's) new business, Ample Wellness!

Covid has done a number on many of us, myself included. One of the things I did to pivot was to complete a year-long diploma in Holistic Nutrition. Having a metabolic disorder, nutrition has always been something that I have been interested in, and I also happen to love cooking. I feel that it's also a natural complement to my massage therapy career, but one that can be done online!

Ample Wellness is a holistic wellness company, focusing on body positivity, and recognizing the pressures placed on us who are living in modern North America. By using a “Good ~ Better ~ Best” formula, we can remove the shame of where we “ought” to be, and simply accept where we are now in our wellness journey, and move on from there.

Ample Wellness will be offering online classes and workshops as well as personalized nutritional consultations. I will also be offering some free content, such as an upcoming Wellness Challenge happening through Facebook, starting next week!

10/19/2020

It's been a while, so I thought I would give you all an update on what I have been up to!

I have been very busy at my two new locations - www.spiritofphysiotherapy.com and www.sagemeadowsmedical.ca. I am now working Tuesdays and Wednesdays at Spirit of Physiotherapy and Massage (Bridalwood), and Thursdays and Fridays at Sage Meadows Medical Centre (Sage Hill). I am experimenting with some Saturdays at both locations, as well.

Both locations have fantastic teams, who I really enjoy working with!

On top of work, however, I am also going to school part-time! I am currently taking Holistic Nutrition, both as something that is complementary to my massage practice, as well as being something that is easier to pivot if we end up in another lockdown situation. This is a year-long program, so I am expecting to finish in June and write my licensing exams in July.

I am very excited about this program, and I am learning a lot of new things! Part of what I am excited about is, learning about how to heal my own metabolism as I have had a metabolic condition for most of my life. I am hoping that, by reducing my systemic inflammation, as well as healing my gut micro-biome, I will finally be able to heal my own metabolism. Of course, the knowledge that I learn, I will be looking to pass on, as well.

I am also very interested in cooking, and I have come across some very interesting (and healthy!) recipes! I am a firm believer that nutritious food should not be stress-creating and needs to satisfy both the palette and the soul, as well as the body!

Take care for now! Enjoy the Fall weather!

CDC recommends people wear cloth masks to block the spread of COVID-19

Looking for a way to help your community and keep busy? Why not sew surgical masks? The CDC has recently recommended that people wear masks when out doing your errands, but, disposable surgical masks and N95 masks are in short supply and should be reserved for front-line doctor and nurses, etc. However, a properly constructed cloth mask (using two layers of tightly woven cotton, with an optional pocket for a disposable filter, like a piece of vacuum cleaner bag, and a nose fitting wire) can be a reasonable alternative, and are re-usable. These are especially helpful for people such as grocery store clerks and home health care aids. Just remember not to touch it with dirty hands!

There is a local volunteer Facebook group, Mask Makers YYC, who are coordinating donations of material and supplies, as well as requests. They have some patterns on their website, too.

A disturbing trend I have seen lately, are people who are anxious about not being able to get in to see their massage therapist, chiropractor, physiotherapist, and so on, so they are booking to get in, no matter where they see an opening. Unfortunately, there are some unscrupulous businesses out there, who are taking advantage of this.

I completely understand - many people NEED massage as a way to keep their pain under control, or reduce their anxiety (and, these are very anxiety-ridden times!) If you are facing weeks, maybe even months, of no access to pain relief, I would probably be rushing to get in, too! I have compassion for those people, and, if your practitioner chooses to risk make a compassionate exception for you, they know your health history, I don't.

One thing you NEED to be aware of, though - IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW WELL THE THERAPIST CLEANS THE ROOM, THERE'S NO WAY TO SOCIALLY DISTANCE DURING A MASSAGE!!! It's because the table isn't where the virus is. It's the therapist! It's because YOU CAN BE CONTAGIOUS FOR UP TO 14 DAYS, AND NOT KNOW IT!!!

This is why ALL of the massage therapy associations in Alberta (and, in fact most around the country) have recommended in the strongest terms that they can, that therapists shut down. Immediately. Unfortunately, they can't *force* us to close. And, I completely understand that therapists are reluctant to close down when it could mean a sudden end to their source of income. I am not shaming the therapists, even though I strongly disagree with them.

**What I am vehemently against, however, are businesses that USE THE CURRENT SOCIAL EMERGENCY TO ADVERTISE!!! THAT is completely despicable!!! I just saw one that was promoting their service to parents who were stressed out after dealing with their kids at home all day. It was positioned as an escape from self-isolation! WE ARE HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS! There is NO way we can condone this!!!**

If you see a business doing that, please, PLEASE, let them know how shameful their practice is! You can do a Google Review, Facebook or Instagram post (tagging them), or call or email them. They are doing it because they think that people won't care, but they are really hurting all of us as a society! When we need to use social distancing to flatten the curve, to avoid complete disaster, we CANNOT promote our services as an escape from isolation or quarantine!

What is the coronavirus and how worried should we be about it?

With the scary news circulating about the coronavirus from China, we just wanted to remind people about what to do if you are sick. Experts are saying that the same things that help prevent spread of the flu will help prevent spread of this new virus, and that includes frequent hand washing and coughing and sneezing into your elbow or shoulder.

When it comes to massage, if you are getting sick, or are actively sick, please don't come in! Actively sick means that you have a fever, a runny nose, are coughing or sneezing (a mild cough or case of the "ahems" is fine, if you don't have any other symptoms), or just plain don't feel well. Obviously, if you have digestive symptoms, you should not come in, either! Getting a massage when you are in this state could actually make you sicker, and we don't want to catch your germs! We do disinfect the table and equipment between clients, always use clean sheets(!), and follow standard health protocols.

If you are sick, call or email us and let us know as soon as you know that you won't be coming in that you aren't feeling well! That lets us cancel your appointment without charging you the late cancel fee, and lets us open up your spot for someone else.

In the meantime, the risk of contracting the coronavirus is actually very small, unless you have recently been to China. If you do feel at risk, or if you feel very unwell, you can contact the healthline at 811 and speak with a nurse.

Stay well!
