HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP? 😴

Healthy sleep habits are the foundation of quality sleep, but sometimes a quick fix is needed.
Here are some strategies to help you slip into sleep when you’re desperately staring at the ceiling in the middle of the night.

1️⃣ Progressive Muscle Relaxation
If you’re in bed and having trouble falling asleep, your body can become very tense. Progressive muscle relaxation can help relieve this tension. It also keeps your mind occupied by distracting you from stressful thoughts.

2️⃣ Cognitive Redesign
This strategy, invented by cognitive scientist Dr. Luc Beaudoin, makes your mind too busy to think about the things that are stressing you out, but not busy enough to keep you fully awake.

3️⃣ Abdominal Breathing
If you are experiencing anxiety while trying to fall asleep, breathing can help. The simple act of focusing on your breathing can help relax your mind, and deep breaths can stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system, which has a calming effect.

Join us in welcoming Stephanie Tsia (she/her) to our clinic!

From her bio:
“Growing up, sports played a huge role in Steph’s life. As a competitive swimmer, runner, and triathlete, she came to recognize how much it meant to have your body perform for you and how devastating it could be if it didn’t. Unfortunately, after sustaining an injury herself, Steph experienced that very devastation. Thankfully, she was surrounded by a strong team of coaches, healthcare professionals, and teammates that greatly aided her recovery. It was at that moment Steph realized she too wanted to be able to play a pivotal role in shaping others’ recovery and thus, was inspired to pursue a path towards physiotherapy. Steph received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Calgary and subsequently, her Masters of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta. Adjunct to her academic career, she worked as a personal trainer and fitness instructor.

She also closely worked with triathletes as an Exercise Physiologist and Strength and Conditioning intern. Outside of the clinic, Steph seeks adventure wherever she can find it. You can probably find her trekking through the backcountry, running through the trails, or 60 feet off the ground at her favourite climbing gym.”
