Today is World Cleanup Day!

World Cleanup Day began in 2018, bringing together millions for "the largest waste collection day in human history." Since then, 197 countries and territories have participated, including over 71 million volunteers.

Throughout the year, SECURE participates in many cleanup initiatives, and one is taking place later this week in support of World Cleanup Day. On September 20, SECURE will help clean the river with the Doig River First Nation, located 30km northeast of Fort St. John, British Columbia.

It’s not too late to get one last “summer” hike in!

Brandi Bugera, Corporate Executive Assistant, submitted this photo of her recent adventures on the Wasootch 7 Peaks Trail, in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. The Wasootch Ridge Trail is a 13.4-kilometer hike that can take upwards of 7 hours to reach the summit.

The latest highlight from our 2022 Sustainability Report shows our environmental stewardship as we reduce our emissions intensity within our environmental waste management infrastructure division, across three different facility types. The decreases in intensity, specifically at our Waste Processing Facilities and Landfills, reinforce that the initiatives taken in 2022 contributed to reduced emissions and improved performance.

Additional targets and goals will be established as our emission management program matures.

On July 29th, local martial arts gym, Straight Blast Gym (SBG) in Drayton Valley, organized an event to thank club members for volunteering during the past year. Members from the gym volunteer at different community events, largely geared toward children and families in the community. Our SECURE field sales representative, Wesley Efird, is a member of SBG and shared this thoughtful initiative. SBG Drayton Valley is part of a global community whose mission statement is “One Tribe, One Vibe.” SBG offers classes for all ages and teach discipline, teamwork, humility, commitment, engagement, with a focus towards enjoying positive perspective and attitude toward life.

The event celebrated all the members and their families who volunteered during the year. The kids enjoyed food, games, while making lasting memories with friends and family. Thanks to Wesley Efird for providing the use of the SECURE bbq and the opportunity to participate in the event.

It’s that time of the year again when we have to say goodbye to our summer students. We are grateful for the hard work of our 34 students. Because of our summer students we received a shot of youthful energy, excitement, innovation, and initiative.

SECURE’s summer students were hired across various business units in Alberta and British Columbia for a four-month work term. For most of the students, this was their first time working in a corporate environment. Our program is a great opportunity for students to discover what they like doing and to align education with career aspirations. For SECURE, this program provides business units with a helping hand and a fresh perspective on the industry. For many summer students, work experience can be a validation of the career path they have chosen, or it may reveal new opportunities.

Cody Wunder, a second-year trading and scheduling student, described his experience with the program:

“SECURE’s Summer Student Program offered valuable opportunities through hands-on facility visits, executive networking events, research projects with other summer students, volunteering days, and team building activities.

We will miss our summer students. Best of luck in their continued education and with whatever their futures may hold.
