Excellent night for the beginning of summer Hawaiian Shirt night at Ashlar last night. Many thanks to all our brethren and visitors! See you all in September!
There's still a couple of months until Stampede, but I thought you might be interested in this.
Calgary Stampede Freemasonry Facts:
Sam Livingston (1831-1897) was well-travelled before he settled in Calgary in 1876. Sam was a native of Ireland but left home when he was 16 to seek his fortune in America. He grew into a tall, imposing man with piercing blue eyes and a booming voice to match his indomitable character.
He made his way to California in the 1850s to try and cash in on the Gold Rush but he didn't make a fortune and after travelling all over North America came to Calgary at the age of 45 and opened a trading post in the town site. He then took some land and farmed at what is now the Glenmore Reservoir.
Brother Sam Livingston was initiated into Bow River Lodge on May 2nd 1887 and remained a proud Mason until his passing a decade later. His gravestone in Union Cemetery bears the famous Square and Compass symbol denoting his membership in our Fraternity.
Bro. Livingston is memorialised as the "First Citizen of Calgary". He was a man whose great pioneering spirit defined the founding of our City and contributed greatly to Freemasonry. Today the Sam Livingston federal building sits only a block away from Freemasons' Hall, and visitors marvel at the huge bronze bust that pays tribute to him at the Calgary International Airport.
Great evening last night at Ashlar. We raised two MMs and the Grand Master did the Charge. We're grateful for the support of other Lodges!
Excellent night at Lodge last night! Both our DDGM Don Mitchell and Senior Grand Warden Chuck Rose were in attendance. The evening started out well with a Festive Board of ham, sweet potatoes and string beans as well as wonderful deserts! Thanks to all the Brethren and guests for attending!
