What happened on May 9? University admin have said that they are not aware of any students who were injured. We know that’s not true.

If you were at the protest, share your story. Even one student harmed by university-sanctioned violence is one too many. Your stories are valuable and will help us get a clearer picture of the events of May 9.

Please send us a DM with your story and links to photos or video.

The Students’ Union is entirely independent from the University of Calgary, and if you wish to remain anonymous, we will safeguard your confidentiality.

The SU office will be closed over the long weekend. We will be looking at your stories starting next week.

In case you missed the live broadcast, SU VP External Mateusz Salmassi and VP Internal Naomie Bakana spoke about the University's response to the encampment on May 9th. Here's a preview of their discussion of the next steps the SU is taking to advocate for student safety.

Read their talking points here:

· The University of Calgary Board of Governors, which has full authority of oversight over the Executive Leadership of the university including its president, called for an emergency meeting to discuss the university’s response to the encampment.
· That emergency meeting will take place later today, and Students’ Union President Ermia Rezaei-Afsah, will be calling on the Board of Governors to launch a full, independent investigation into what happened and how university leadership handled this.
· While there are only three student representatives on the university’s Board of Governors, the fact of the matter is that it is the Board of Governors’ duty and responsibility to oversee university leadership and hold it accountable.
· Students have talked to us about their injuries from that night on campus. Many students have told us that they are traumatized.
· The University of Calgary Senate will also be having an emergency meeting later today to discuss the university’s reaction to the encampments.
· The Senate has over 60 members, which include representatives from the general public, alumni, faculty, and a handful of students.
· Senators are volunteers, and their role is to promote and represent the university to the wider community, as well as do a lot of the university’s ceremonial work.
· Senate and alumni also have strong ties to the university’s donor network.
· While they don’t have formal oversight authority over university administration, many incredibly influential people make up the Senate.
· A big part of the Senate’s role is to uphold and improve the reputation of the university.
· Well, there are now viral videos of flashbang grenades being thrown at students who are fleeing past the Mac Hall building.
· Myself, as the Students’ Union Vice-President External, and my co-host Naomie here, who is the Vice-President Internal, will be in attendance at this emergency Senate meeting.
· Together we will be raising everything that SU President Ermia raises at the Board of Governors meeting.
· This Senate meeting will take place a few hours after the Board meeting.

The events of Thursday, May 9 continue to be top of mind for students and community members. Student protesters sought dialogue with UCalgary admin, and were instead met with hasty and disproportionate violence.

On this week’s radio show, we will break down the timeline of the events of May 9th as we understand them, provide a summary of our position and an update on the steps we are taking to ensure that the university is held accountable for their choices.

The SU hosts a weekly radio show on CJSW 90.9 Thursdays at 11:00 a.m. Your hosts are SU VP Internal Naomie Bakana and SU VP External Mateusz Salmassi. Listen live at CJSW 90.9 FM or listen later at the following link: https://cjsw.com/program/students-union-weekly/

Read the full statement at the link in our bio.

The University of Calgary Students’ Union (SU) unequivocally condemns the actions taken against students on May 9th, which saw students assaulted with flash-bang grenades, tear gas, and non-lethal munitions in alarmingly rapid escalation.

Student protesters sought dialogue with admin, only to be continuously rebuffed. The fact that the university’s president feels more comfortable calling the police than meaningfully engaging with students demonstrates where his priorities lie.

Yesterday’s actions set back years of progress that was built towards strong relations between the administration and students, leaving students to ask how they are supposed to feel safe exercising their rights on campus if the first response is to call the police.

An apology will not be sufficient from President McCauley, and we will wait for either the administration to resume dialogue with us or for them to take accountability for what happened. If that does not happen, we will be pushing for more serious action, as determined by student demand.

The SU is above all else concerned with ensuring student safety and that student rights are upheld. We appreciate the continued response and the unified calls for accountability from the community. The SU continues to invite all students interested in speaking with us or requesting support to contact the SU or visit our offices during the week.

Shaziah and Ermia (and all of us at the SU) are so proud to announce the approval of their proposal for an SU Quality Meal program.

In recent years, we have seen increased demand for more food security supports on campus. While programs such as the SU Campus Food Bank provide essential services including emergency supports, we also recognize that these are only part of the picture. So we started looking for more ways to support students before emergency supports are their only option.

The SU Quality Meal aims to increase food access for students at the University of Calgary by establishing a low-cost ($3-4), dignified, vegan, nut-free, and gluten free hot meal through a rotating menu item at the SU Den and Black Lounge. This meal is meant to provide nutritious and affordable options for all students needing one in a stigma-free location during the fall and winter semester.

This program will be proudly supported by SU Quality Money, beginning in fall 2024.
