๐Ÿ”Ž NEED TO IDENTIFY ๐Ÿ”

We are asking for public assistance in locating a vehicle that was stolen from a woman earlier this month by a man who was recently released from custody & was breaching his court-imposed conditions.

๐Ÿ“ On Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, the victim & her son were leaving KidStrong, located at 9950 Macleod Tr. S.E. As they were getting into her 2007 Kia Rio, an unknown man attempted to steal the vehicle.

A brief struggle occurred between the suspect & the woman & as a result, she was physically assaulted several times & sustained minor injuries.

Bystanders came to the aid of the victim after her son sought help, however, the suspect was successful in stealing the vehicle.

Police were subsequently contacted & began an investigation.

Our Robbery Unit detectives quickly identified the man as an individual who was released from custody earlier in the day on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024. As the investigation progressed, several members from various areas across the Service were involved in searching for the suspect.

๐Ÿ“ On Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at approx. 6:15 p.m., police were called to the area of Bearspaw Dam Road and 85 Street N.W., for reports of an unknown man believed to be car prowling in the area. Thanks to information provided by the public, officers were able to swiftly arrest the man who was identified as the suspect from the Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, carjacking incident.

๐Ÿ“Œ As a result, Wayne Aaron CANNING, 43, of Calgary, was charged with robbery, mischief to property, theft & several breaches of a release order.

๐Ÿ”ด In-custody death in Acadia

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an in-custody death that occurred in the southeast community of Acadia.

At around 12:55 a.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, we responded to the Carriage House Hotel and Conference Centre, located at 9030 Macleod Trail S.E., for reports of a man causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Upon arrival, officers located a man in the front lobby acting erratically.

Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation; however, the man was not cooperative. A struggle ensued, resulting in one officer deploying a Taser. The man continued to be combative with officers, resulting in one officer deploying OC spray. The man was taken into custody and, shortly after, went into medical distress. Sadly, and despite the efforts of EMS, the man was declared deceased at the scene.

No officers or members of the public were injured.

As is standard practice with a death in custody, the Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has directed ASIRT to investigate.

As this is now an active ASIRT investigation, no further details will be released.

Protest at Tomkins Park results in tickets

At approximately 2 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2024, a group of approximately 115 protestors gathered at Tomkins Park for a non-permitted event. Police and bylaw officers were on scene to advise the group of Calgary bylaws, including use of an amplification device which caused disruption to the community.

Around 3:30 p.m., the group marched westbound on 17 Avenue S.W. to 14 Street S.W. The group spilled out onto the roadway, ignoring orders from police to return to the sidewalk. Despite efforts by officers, including the use of bikes to fence off the road and numerous requests by loud hailer, they refused to cooperate.
The group returned eastbound on 17 Avenue S.W., travelling past Tomkins Park to approximately 4 Street S.W., before returning to the park around 4:30 p.m. The unsanctioned march impacted traffic in the area throughout Sunday afternoon.

We will be working with our enforcement partners at Calgary Community Standards using the evidence gathered today to issue the appropriate tickets under Calgary bylaws. In addition to enforcement for the use of amplification devices and non-permitted gatherings in a park, officers were deeply concerned with the number of children who were positioned on the roadway by parents participating in the march, at the back of the group where they were vulnerable to motor vehicles. Anyone who participates in a parade without a permit can face fines as much as $3,000.

Approximately 12 tickets were issued today, with more enforcement expected to occur in the days and weeks that follow. Three people were arrested โ€“ two for obstruction and one for both obstruction and assaulting a police officer. Charges are pending and no further information is available at this time.

The Calgary Police Service is committed to facilitating lawful, peaceful and safe demonstrations that have minimal impact to the community. To learn more about protesting in Calgary, go to calgarypolice.ca/protesting.

On Oct.16, 2023, a severely injured woman emerged from a wooden area near the Calgary Zoo and was asking for help. A short time later, she was seen being chased by an unidentified man. After an extensive search, neither the man nor woman were located. A short clip of the woman seeking assistance was captured by Zoo CCTV.

Calgary Zoo Security Supervisor, William Duggan, went above and beyond his duties to assist investigators in locating the injured woman. He meticulously combed through the facility's many cameras, seeking any camera angle that may have caught the unknown individuals. He was successful in finding additional CCTV footage, which he promptly provided to police.

The footage indicated that the woman was in real danger and needed to be located as soon as possible.

William then examined CCTV images to cross-referenced vehicles seen in the area, in hopes of gathering a new lead.

Two days later, when the woman had still not been located, William conducted patrols in a wooded area near where the incident occurred, where he and a colleague located a well-hidden encampment, and also noticed a man matching the description from the CCTV. Police were notified immediately.

Police quickly located the man, who was with the woman. The man initially tried to flee police but was successfully apprehended. The woman was in grave medical distress and transported to hospital.

She was located because of William's dedication and perseverance to go beyond his duties. When the woman arrived at the hospital, doctors determined that she was in life-threatening condition, and would not have survived the night if she had not been found.

For his determination and heroic efforts, we are awarding William Duggan with the Award of Exceptional Recognition.
