Wishing our students and families a safe and spoooky Halloween!

LYNX students in grades K-8 enjoyed a fall visit to the Calgary Corn Maze at the Farm Yard. They learned about plants in a special lesson prepared for the LYNX students. They also participated in a Mining Activity, Wagon Ride and a Lesson about Animals. What a great way to learn our lessons.

10/25/2022

LYNX students recently visited Butterfield Acres. They had great fun visiting with all the animals, enjoyed a hay ride and had a Pumpkin Scavenger Hunt. Everyone had a lot of fun and the students were allowed to take home the pumpkins that they found! 🎃

Did you spot the sisters? The LYNX logo is obvious in
that the focus of the logo is the Lynx: a short-tailed wild
cat with keen vision and toes that spread out like
snowshoes, a forest cat with excellent hearing and the
stealthy ability to stalk and ambush prey. But…did you
spot what’s unique to our Lynx? Hidden in the image is
the famous Three Sisters mountain range located near
Banff and Canmore. The significance of the Three
Sisters hidden within the Lynx is a nod to where the
school first originated in the Bow Valley.

Meet the Principal - Joe Smith
An experienced teacher of 28 years, Joe has taught children in the public system, in a high academic private school, and then with Third Schools he taught special needs, home education, and now LYNX nature inspired programming. Joe has experience with leadership, as he spent 18 years as a Principal, or Associate Principal. Throughout each teaching experience Joe used his athletic background to coach most sports and to help children experience outdoor education. Joe believes that outdoor experiences can have a positive impact on every child. Joe is currently leading the Lynx program and is very excited about the opportunity to make education outdoors, a choice for many families. In his free time Joe enjoys traveling, camping, hiking, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Rough start? Here are a few tips for a successful start to
your day:

SLEEP! SLEEP! SLEEP!
Setting a regular bed time, not using electronics 2 hours
before bed, and creating an environment that promotes
relaxation (black out curtains, essential oils like
lavender, soft sheets, a high-quality pillow, etc.)

Prep the night before:
-Have your child look at their schedule/lesson plan to
know what lessons they have and what books/materials
they’ll need for each.
-Have your child clean their desk or workstation and set
out any books, materials they’ll need for the morning.
-Encourage your child to pick and plan a healthy
breakfast, and set out anything so that it’s ready in the
morning.
-Have your child lay out their clothes for the next day.

Make the bed: this develops good discipline and helps
your child keep their room clean and organized.

Keep everything in the same place: avoid wasted time
looking for supplies, books or assignments and give
everything a designated spot at their workstation.

Happy Thanksgiving to our staff and our Lynx families. Enjoy your time together on this day.

Try these healthy lunch tips to keep school lunches interesting.
Include the major food groups: Have a balance lunch box that includes a protein, grain, fruit/vegetable and dairy.

Select nutrient rich foods: These hidden goodies have
huge health benefits.
Calcium: found in dairy, canned fish, and dark greens
Fibre: beans, pears, berries, whole grains, broccoli, most fruits and veggies
Potassium: potatoes, beans, and avocados

Add some zest to your sandwich: this lunchtime staple doesn’t need to be boring. With a few swaps or additions lunch time can be easier to prepare for and
yummier to eat.
Try tortillas, wraps or pitas.
Use leftovers from dinner as the protein (turkey perhaps).
Try the ‘unconventional’ proteins: eggs, canned tuna or hummus.

Add in those veggies: try darker greens like spinach or kale, add carrots or cucumbers to not only “beef” up your sandwich but sneak in some healthy
nutrients.

Put your Sandwich in a bowl: forget the bread, bun or
pita and put everything in a bowl instead. Add on some
healthy nuts for taste and crunch, some shredded
cheese or tortilla chips and you’ve got a winning power
bowl on your hands. Don’t forget the dressing!

Fresh air, good for the mind and the soul. At Lynx,
learning in nature brings children closer to the world
around them. Exploration opens the mind.

Today is and in Canada. We are honoring the children who never returned home and survivors of Canada's residential schools, as well as their families and communities. We encourage our community to learn more about this part of our Canadian history to adopt a shared understanding of what happened so that we may educate our children/students and those around us.

Scientists have proven that outdoor education is not only fun but also aids students in concentrating better on their studies. It is common in traditional education formats to be present inside the classroom but absent mentally. Children/students engagement levels significantly determine whether they will score high or low academic grades. Recently, it was discovered that outdoor education aids in enhancing children/students’ engagement, interests, and attention. It is also essential to note that children/students are always required to observe various things in nature, increasing their understanding, cognitive skills, and thinking abilities. 📚💡

Nature based teaching/learning is a philosophy and belief about the power of what we can learn when we develop an intimate and meaningful connection with our natural world. By educating our future generations in this way, they will ‘know’ and ‘care’ and lead in the ’protection’ of the environment we all share! 🌲⛰️

At LYNX, we find that Albertans are ready to embrace a ‘new way of living’, but they still want their children/students to have access to a world class education. They also understand that successful teaching/learning takes place within a social context. LYNX presents a unique nature inspired programming solution that meets these needs in a ‘fresh’ and ‘energetic’ manner!💡😄

LYNX Provides a Nature Inspired Alterative to Classroom Learning 09/19/2022

"Cochrane students in grades 1 through 9, and Calgary students in grades ECS through 9 have an exciting alternative to conventional classroom or online learning, thanks to LYNX."

We are proud to have our unique teaching/learning methods and outdoor programming highlighted in detail in Cochrane Today! If you are interested in nature inspired programming for your child, send us a message or give us a call today! 📚🌲

LYNX Provides a Nature Inspired Alterative to Classroom Learning What could be better than having a classroom that was a ‘breath of fresh air’? “ Cochrane students in grades 1 through 9, and Calgary students in grades ECS through 9 have an exciting alternative to conventional classroom or online learning, thanks to LYNX.

A recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology concluded that outdoor instruction with explorative learning methodology significantly promotes the attitudes of children/students toward learning, i.e. their intrinsic motivation. 'Explorative' means nothing more than simply giving children/students the freedom to discover the subject matter through independently organized experiments. These outdoor dynamics, which provide a strong boost to more situational interest for science and engagement with the subject, can be evoked in occasional outdoor instruction sessions as well.🌲📚

At LYNX we embrace outdoor education as we work to captivate our children/students and therefore teach/learn more effectively! 🙌 😄

Timeline photos 09/15/2022

We are proud to have Canmore, Banff, Kananaskis Country, and other amazing outdoor areas so close to Calgary. We believe in the power of utilizing these unique natural areas in education to foster a unique relationship of teaching/learning for our children/students! ⛰️🌲

Timeline photos 09/13/2022

We see that children/students who are highly distractible (ADD, ADHD), perform better than in a conventional classroom because they are ‘moving their bodies’. LYNX provides opportunities for our children/students to excel in their learning through meaningful experiences in the outdoors. 📚🌲

Timeline photos 09/11/2022

LYNX believes that children/students deserve the opportunity to learn and grow in a welcoming, caring and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. Additionally, leadership development is a core part of LYNX programming and each child/student will have a regular opportunity to lead in various roles.😄

Timeline photos 09/09/2022

LYNX’s approach to the delivery of provincial curriculum will be designed to allow for flexibility, build on prior knowledge and experiences, unify the child’s learning, reflect real world experiences and match the ways in which children organize their thoughts.💡

Timeline photos 09/07/2022

LYNX believes that all children/students have unique gifts, talents and the potential to become excellent learners and be successful. All children/students have opportunities to experience success in a manner that aligns with each child/student’s needs, maturity, readiness and ability. 😄

Timeline photos 09/03/2022

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) explored how outdoor education plays a significant role in students’ intellectual, behavioral, and emotional development. Different studies indicate that learners who study outdoor often develop problem-solving skills and a sense of creativity, confidence, independence, motor skills, and empathy towards other people.🌲😄

Timeline photos 08/31/2022

Children/students are agents of their own learning, actively building knowledge, skills, dispositions and feelings. We must continue to commit to fostering each child’s/student’s self-esteem, well-being and growing need for independence. As children become older students, play is still essential although different. We believe play is integral to children’s/student’s learning and essential to quality of life in childhood and a primary way of understanding the world. 😄

Timeline photos 08/29/2022

LYNX is confident that our facilities and surrounding communities are a centre of excellence in providing ‘nature inspired’ education. We see a global movement that is embracing nature in education and are proud to be a part of it!

Timeline photos 08/27/2022

Learning from the land within education systems presents a unique opportunity for educators and students to learn more about the histories and stories of the land and people while meeting curricular outcomes.🌲⛰️

Timeline photos 08/25/2022

LYNX, along with the global movement that is embracing nature in education on a whole, works hard to promote ‘connectedness to the land’ around all of us. We believe that by educating our future generations in this way, they will know, care and lead in the protection of the environment we all share. 😄🌲

Timeline photos 08/23/2022

At LYNX, we believe learning happens through positive relationships, exploration, experiences and sense of belonging that enable children to become productive contributors to the world in which they live in! 😄

Timeline photos 08/21/2022

Education is more than a process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, habits, and personal development. At LYNX we work to ensure our children/students gain the knowledge and skills to form the foundations for successful and fulfilling lives, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world! 🌎
