Hospice Calgary

We promise to journey with you, through end-of-life and grief, for as long as you need us.

Hospice Calgary guides children, teens and adults through the grieving process as they face a life-threatening illness and death of a loved one. Our team of professionals provide individual, family and group support as well as 24 hour end-of-life care. At our two centres of care, Sage Centre and Rosedale Hospice, our specialists provide individual counselling, group support, workshops and 24-hour end-of-life care.

Are you interested in making a tribute to someone in the Rosedale Garden?

There is still plenty of summer left! Donate $110 or more to tribute your loved one with a temporary card in the garden. The cards will bring extra-special meaning to the Rosedale backyard until October!

"Rosedale in its entirety is really a family, and they embrace each patient, family member, and staff member as such."

A great night for launching our kids for Dreams Take Flight Calgary! In November, five Children's Grief Centre clients are getting the trip of a lifetime to Universal Studios! Last Thursday, some of our counsellors dressed up to celebrate, and the kids got to know each other a little and learn about the trip.

In January of this year, Sam (a nursing student) started her preceptorship at Rosedale Hospice. Her personal experiences of cancer in her family had brought on the desire to work with this population. She wanted to either be placed in Oncology or Palliative care, so Rosedale was the perfect blend of both worlds by being a cancer-specific hospice.

"I emotionally connected with Rosedale through the more intimate and close-knit connections I was able to form with patients living with cancer. " - Sam

Reflecting on her experience at Rosedale, Sam is grateful for the support and strength she received from staff, patients, and families. Staff would check on her and offer assistance and the same support was shared by patients and families upon learning that she was a student. The encouragement helped her feel more capable and pushed her to continuously improve her practice.

Sam has now completed her preceptorship, passed her NCLEX and is working at Rosedale as an RN! We are so thankful to have her.

This evening we are having a picnic with some of our Children's Grief Centre clients and a friend of Hospice Calgary, Karen, made us this incredible cake! Inspiration was drawn from a painting in one of our counselling rooms that we call "The Waterfall of Grief" (see second photo). The image explores what it's like to have life change course after a death. Sometimes it feels like falling and as time goes on the river of life moves past the intensity.

Thank you Karen for using your talents to make this for our clients.

Children grieve differently than adults: they grieve in doses, alternating between times of play and intense emotions. A child’s age, developmental stage, and experiences will determine their understanding of death and ability to cope with the death of someone in their life.

Sam spends some of his free time as an administrative volunteer at Rosedale Hospice. His favourite thing about volunteering is helping to make Rosedale a special place for patients and their families.

His advice to anyone interested in volunteering? Be yourself. Celebrate who you are and what you can give. We couldn't agree more!
