During cataract surgery, the natural cloudy lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens, or an “IOL.”
At Vector Eye Centre, patients have a variety of IOL’s to choose from, each with different benefits. Many IOL options available can significantly reduce your reliance on glasses after surgery.
Visit our website to check out the types of IOL’s offered at Vector Eye Centre and learn more!
Wishing a very Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads everywhere! We hope you’re having a great weekend. Thanks for all that you do! ❤💙🙂

: Using eye drops
Having trouble getting your drops in? There are a few tips & tricks we recommend:
• To prevent infection, always wash your hands before using eyedrops. Never touch the tip of the dropper bottle with your hands.
• Careful not to touch the dropper bottle to your eye – this can cause a corneal abrasion. Ouch!
• To instill drops, tilt your head back and look up, then use one hand to pull your lower lid down to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper bottle upside down with your other hand just above the pocket, and gently squeeze a single drop into the eye.
• You may find it easier to use a mirror to help with your aim!
• Still struggling? You can also try laying back on a bed or couch. Or if possible, ask a family member or friend for help.
• We have small drainage holes called puncta on the inner corners of our eyes to help our tears drain (this is why our noses run when we cry!). If you find an unpleasant taste in the back of your throat after using drops, you can gently press your fingers to the inner corners of your eyes for about a minute to prevent drainage.
• If you’ve recently had surgery and need to use multiple eyedrops post-operatively, be sure to wait 5 minutes in between each drop.
June is Cataract Awareness Month!
As everyone grows older, the lenses of their eyes thicken and become cloudier. Eventually, people may find it more difficult to read street signs, and colours may seem dull. The good news is that cataracts can be corrected with a very common surgery.
Check out our website for lots of great information on cataract surgery, types of intraocular lenses, what to expect before and after surgery, and much more!
Happy Pride Month, YYC! 🌈
Did you know your brain adapts to vision loss? Some eye diseases can go unnoticed until it’s too late. Once vision is lost, it can’t be restored. Ophthalmologists can spot eye disease before vision is compromised and protect your sight.
Don’t skip out on your annual eye exam!
Wishing you all a wonderful day from the team at Vector Eye Centre. Hope you find a reason to smile! 🙂
Are allergies causing your dry eye symptoms to get worse? This time of year may cause your eyes to become more itchy, red, watery, and uncomfortable. Here are some tips to help:
• Don’t rub your eyes! This can cause dry eye symptoms to get worse over time and also potentially cause damage to your cornea.
• Increase artificial tear use. Consider preservative-free artificial tears if you’re using them more than 4 times per day.
• Try a cold compress on the eyes for relief from itching and discomfort.
• Ask your doctor if an allergy eye drop may be a good option for you.
• Still struggling? Find the root cause of your dry eye symptoms by booking a dry eye assessment with Vector. No referral is necessary to see our Dry Eye Centre. Call today!
- Quit smoking!
Cigarette smoking is linked to dry eye, cataracts, macular degeneration, and damage to the optic nerve. Exposure to secondhand smoke is also hard on the eyes.
Avoiding second-hand smoke – or quitting if you are a smoker – is one of the best investments you can make in your long-term eye health!
Wishing a very Happy Mother’s Day to moms everywhere! Thank you for all that you do, have the most wonderful day! ❤️💐
May is
Here are some top tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology to keep your eyes at their very best:
• Eye protection always! At home, read the labels on cleaning products, and wear eye protection when gardening or working on home improvements to prevent eye injuries.
• Sunglasses are important year-round!
• If you wear contact lenses, never clean your contacts with water, and always take them out before going to bed.
• A diet rich in plant-based foods and low in saturated fats is best.
• Never share makeup and throw away eye makeup after 3 months of use.
• Pregnant? Some eye changes are normal during pregnancy, but if you continue to experience issues after becoming a new mom, be sure to talk to your doctor.
• Once you turn 40, be sure to book an annual comprehensive eye exam. Early detection for macular degeneration and glaucoma is key! Regular eye exams can also help detect a surprising number of non-eye diseases like arthritis and diabetes.
Today is National Doctors Day! We would like to extend a very special thanks to our own Vector doctors, Dr. Bhamra, Dr. Luong, Dr. Poulis, and Dr. Harapiak.

– Don’t rub your eyes!
Sometimes we'll feel the need to rub our eyes if we have a foreign body sensation, or if we suffer from allergies that cause our eyes to itch. But did you know this can be harmful? Eye rubbing can cause a range of issues like:
• Eye infections
• Corneal abrasions
• Worsening of allergy symptoms over time
• An increase for your risk for keratoconus, a corneal condition where the cornea changes shape and becomes thinner
• Loosening of lids over time, which can cause dry eye symptoms to worsen
If you feel like you need to rub your eyes we recommend trying a cool compress, artificial tears, or some full blinks. If there is a foreign body in your eye, try flushing with artificial tears and please see your eye care provider. If allergies have you “itching” to rub those eyes, ask your eye doctor if an allergy eye drop may be helpful!
Among the most common sports-related eye injuries ophthalmologists routinely treat are corneal abrasions, bruising around the eye, retinal detachments, and internal bleeding.
Here are some safety tips from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for all athletes to practice:
• Check and follow sport specific requirements and standards regarding eye protection
• Consider replacing eyewear once yellowed or damaged to ensure the best protection
• For basketball, racquet sports, soccer and field hockey, wear protective eyewear with polycarbonate lenses
• For snow or water sports, consider eyewear with UV protection to avoid sunburn or glare
• Athletes who wear contacts or glasses should still wear eye protection; contacts and regular eyeglasses are not replacements for protective sports eyewear
If you experience an eye injury, seek medical attention immediately, even if the injury seems minor; sometimes noticeable symptoms develop later.
Hey YYC!
Wishing you all a Happy Easter and wonderful weekend! 🐰🐣🌷🥚
We love hearing from patients about their experience at Vector Eye Centre! Thank you so much for the kind words, we’re so thrilled we were able to help and make it a great experience!
According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the most dangerous jobs for your eyes include work that exposes you to:
• Flying shards of metal or glass
• Tools that slip or malfunction
• Particles such as wood splinters, metal shavings or crystalline silica
• Spattered chemicals
Using the right eye protection while doing potentially hazardous jobs can save your sight. Make sure you're wearing the right type of safety glasses, goggles, or face shields for the task at hand!
Ready to Sham-ROCK this Day! 🍀🌈
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, YYC!
Did you know the first successful corneal transplant was performed in 1905? Almost 40 years later, the first-ever eye bank was established in New York City. Today, eye banks are in operation across North America, Europe, and Asia.
March is National Eye Donor Awareness Month. While there is no such thing as a full eye transplant yet, about 185,000 corneal transplants are performed every year across the globe. Corneal transplant surgeries such as DSAEK, DMEK, PKP, and DALK, can be life changing for patients suffering from vision loss caused by thinning, scarring or swelling of the cornea, as well as corneal ulcers, pervious eye surgery complications, or Keratoconus.
The amazing thing about corneal tissue is that everyone can be a donor, no matter one’s age, eyesight, blood type, or eye colour. To learn more about the importance of donor registration and giving the gift of sight, check out the Lions Eye Bank’s and the Eye Bank Association of America’s websites!
