Deep breathing can actually be used as a tool to unlearn the pain response and improve control over chronic pain?! π€―
This is mainly because it helps activate our bodies parasympathetic nervous system (AKA our relaxation response). Pain itself has a vicious cycle causing our sympathetic nervous system to fire constantly, which causes more stress over time, elevating blood pressure, heart rate, breathing pace, etc. This often leaves those living with chronic pain feeling their pain more intensely and constant.
Here's how you can find relief π
1οΈβ£ Get comfy (sitting of lying down preferably)
2οΈβ£ Focus your entire attention on your breath, zero distractions
3οΈβ£ INHALE 3-5 seconds (be sure to allow your belly to expand as you do so, filling your lungs entirely)
4οΈβ£ EXHALE 3-5 seconds (remove all breath from your lungs, moving your belly as close to your spine as you can)
5οΈβ£ With each repetition, try to focus your attention on an area of your body that feels painful or tense, release it with each exhale.

I had this breakthrough idea today...(not saying it's original, but my Manual Osteopathic Therapist brain is trained to explore all the different possibilities when seeking the root cause of dysfunction)
I have been struggling with hormonal migraines for roughly five years.
Being the holistic minded person I am, I have tried EVERYTHING to bring balance to my hormones - NAET, massage, manual osteo, chiro, nutrition, therapy, all of the directions I could think of.
Then I wondered..
Our very first vertebrae, C1, has what is referred to as a viscerosomatic reflex (a relationship between organ and spine essentially) with our pituitary gland (one of our main hormone producers). Is it possible there is any correlation with C1 dysfunction and hormone imbalance?? π€
I spoke to my practitioner about my theory and we began mobilizing my C1/C2.
I began looking into research tonight and, though seemingly limited, the Still Research Institute (named after the very founder of Manual Osteopathic Therapy himself!) found that dysfunction at C1/2 was in fact associated with abnormal function of the pituitary which resulted in abnormal hormone secretions!!!

Not only does this demonstrate the amazing holistic views of Manual Osteopathic Therapy, but it's also an excellent reminder that YOU know your body best.
Sure, I didn't think of this connection first, but now that my mind has connected this as another possible way to balance hormones, I am extremely excited to not only see how it helps me, but spread the word to those of you out there (many of which I have already met in appointments here at the clinic!) suffering with hormone imbalance. πͺ
