🌲The Golden Spruce: A Symbol of Sacred Tradition and Irreparable Loss
(Psst! You can read more on our blog!)
The Golden Spruce, a rare Sitka spruce tree with golden needles, was a unique natural wonder located on Haida Gwaii. According to Haida oral tradition, the tree was once a young boy who disrespected nature, and as a consequence, was turned into the tree as a reminder to his people to live in harmony with the environment. The tree was sacred to the Haida people, who knew it held spiritual significance and was a symbol of their connection to the land.
Tragically, in 1997, the Golden Spruce was felled by an environmental activist as a form of protest against the logging industry. The loss of the Golden Spruce was deeply felt by both the Haida community and the broader public. Luckily, some cuttings of the tree were able to be saved and replanted. One bough can be seen in the nearby Millennium Park in the town of Port Clements, protected by a fence and marked with a plaque.
Though the tree no longer stands, the Golden Spruce Trail offers a serene walk through the lush landscape, with plaques that invite you to reflect on the deep spiritual ties that the Haida people have with the land. This trail isn’t just a hike—it’s a journey into the heart of Haida heritage.

Mountain goat, or big horn sheep? Have you seen them in the wild?
People will often confuse the two, but there are a few key differences;
- Bighorn sheep have curly horns, while mountain goats have short straight horns
- Mountain goats prefer higher elevations, while bighorn sheep will happily head onto roads to find salt to lick.
