Another gardening season has come to an end. Happy Holidays from !
With winter now on its way there can be time to think about our gardens and lawns, what worked well this season and what changes can be made for the next one. Fox Grove is starting a little series on Tips for a Healthy Yard. This week is Soil.
Last of the gardening this season with some helpers.
A frosty morning. But turning into a warm sunny November day.
Last mows of the season. Lots of mulching.
A frosty morning in Cobourg. October 31.
Leave the šs.
This fall try moving or mulching your fallen leaves to spread in your flower beds or to keep on your lawn.
Leaves have nutrients that strengthen your soil when they breakdown over the winter. Bagged leaves sit in a landfill and produce methane. Also, animals and insects use fallen leaves as habitats.
A rainy Friday.
Garden work. Cleaning up beds.
Black Walnut Trees. They are beautiful and native to North America. But their roots extend 50 feet or more from the trunk and release a natural herbicide, called juglone. This makes it very difficult to grow anything near a Black Walnut Tree.
And the fruit. The heavy nuts fall from the tree like large golf balls. We collected many of them in baskets in order to mow the lawn. But the squirrels had other ideas. šæļø They moved all the nuts from the baskets into our back shed, hiding them in the floor and everywhere in between - storing the nuts for the winter, or mocking us.
Happy Friday the 13th! There is a chill in the air.
Heading out! It has been so dry in Cobourg and most grass doesnāt need to be cut. But lots of hedge trimming, cleaning up beds, and preparing plants for colder days.
September grass and batteries charging.

The vegetable garden is growing even in this dry heat and with visitors š°. (Before and after). And enjoying the strawberries š before the season is over.

Cleaning up some beds. Action shots! The air is clear, the sun is out, and we had some much needed rain.
Itās an eerie day in Cobourg. Smoke from around 425 wildfires across the country is creating air pollution. It smells like a bonfire out here. Stay safe!
Mike did 35,000 steps and around 25 kms in lawn work yesterday. Plus biking. Heāll be wearing a mask today.
Are you composting? You can create your own healthy nutrient rich soil to use for planting.
Find a sunny spot and enclose your compost to keep out animals. Make sure air and sun and rain can get in.
Put in fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, fallen leaves, plant debris, and yard waste.
Keep it moist and mix to aerate. You can harvest once it has turned a rich brown colour and decomposed into small soil-like particles.
