Looking for just the perfect gift for your hockey fan?
Here's your chance to own an original work of art by Hockey Night in Canada's Brian McFarlane.
Brian has released these works to me to sell on his behalf to help raise funds for Centreton Men's Shed.
He was the host and commentator on Hockey Night in Canada from 1965-1990.
He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1995.
He is also a prolific writer with over 90 published books and over 1.5 million sold.
Brian loves to paint (even in his eighties) with acrylics being his favourite medium.
These beautiful landscapes and pond hockey depictions would make a great Christmas gift for the hockey fan in your family and may even be a valuable investment one day!
You can pick it from me or have it shipped, send me your address if you would like a quote on cost of shipping.
I can deliver in the Northumberland County area. Don't forget to note the painting's item number when ordering.
Prices range from $100 -$350.
Thanks for taking a peek - Stew Babcock

With over 90 published books and over 1.5 million sold he is also a prolific writer of books on the sport.
He also loves to paint (even in his eighties) with acrylics being his favourite medium.
Brian and his wonderful wife Joan live in Stouffville and have a summer home here in Grafton.
Well done Brian and kudos to you Joan because we know behind ever great man is a great woman.

Last Saturday morning a few of us met at the walking trail behind the Grafton Arena. None of us had walked it before and found it to be a pleasant 20 minute hike through an lovely old cedar forest which some might describe as enchanted (I was hoping to see some little people peeking out from behind the trees). We hope to make this a regular event and will choose our next walk at this Thursday's meeting. Stay posted for the location and come join us for a little exercise and a lot of "yarn spinning" PS - Don't forget your refreshment and mask.

We got the OK to start meeting at the Centreton Community Hall. We had our first meeting (since we were shutdown due to Covid last March) last Thursday and 6 of us showed up. We have to abide by the guidelines set out by the township which is no more than 10 people and observing social distancing and masks on at all times. It was a good meeting and looking forward to this coming Thursday. Anyone wishing to join us can meet us 9am Oct 15 at the hall. Wear your mask and bring your own coffee, tea or water etc.

Come join your fellow shedders Saturday Sept 26th in supporting Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre by participating in Walk A Mile In Her Shoes https://cornerstonenorthumberland.ca/

Their annual fundraiser is called Walk-A-Mile which normally includes all those signing up to walk a mile, wearing RED high heel shoes through the downtown of Cobourg! But due to Covid, this year’s walk is virtual. The members of Men’s Shed, Centreton are intending to walk in our work boots (perhaps with a strip or two of RED duct tape on them) along County Road 22 in Northumberland County. Our 5-km walk takes place between County Roads 23 and 45. We will walk between 10 and 11 AM on Saturday September 26. We have all contributed registration fees to participate but are contacting our family members, neighbours and friends to support our efforts as well. This is the main fundraiser for Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre and we intend to show our support for them this year.
You can have you friends and family sponsor you at this link: https://www.canadahelps.org/gp/83234/ at make a donation. Thank you for your support. No contribution is too small as we hope to raise $5,000 for Cornerstone

Phone Scams work because people believe that what they are told over the phone is true. However you need to remember, they phoned you and that is the secret to avoiding scams. Most phones have an ident-a-call. This is where the phone number pops up on your screen. If you have a phone number in your database then the caller’s name will appear. Those calls are legitimate. Do not answer the phone unless you know who it is. Make sure all your friends, relatives and important contacts such as the doctor and pharmacist are in your phone’s data bank. Those are the phone numbers you answer.

All other calls should not be answered. This is a hard lesson to learn when most of us were raised to answer the phone when it rang. However those years have long gone the way of 60’s television shows. Do not answer the phone if you do not know the number. If the call is important they will leave a voice message and you can call them back. People who want to talk to you will leave a message. Doctors, friends and relatives all leave messages. Scam artists don’t.

If your phone does not have ident-a-call then you should upgrade your phone to be safe. If you have trouble programming it, get a relative or close friend to do it for you. Only answer those calls from people you know. Then you will be safe from phone scam artists.

Recently a few of our members led by Gaye Hoskins, donated their time and skills to help out Haldimand Court Apartments in Grafton. The retirement home needed a couple of picnic tables refinished and a new one built to their specifications to enable easier access to seating for their senior tenants. With help from Wayne Hillier, Trevor Holmes and Phil Kift, Gaye and crew stripped and sanded the 6 ft and 8 ft tables and then painted them.
This took quite a bit of time and then Gaye and Wayne commenced building the square one with the 4 individual double seats from the plans provided by Haldimand Court who also provided the materials for the build.
Nice job guys! And a big thank you to Gaye's son for the use of his wonderful shop - couldn't have done it without your shop.

"Men don't talk face to face - they talk shoulder to shoulder, usually while doing something with their hands". I came across that quote while googling "men's sheds" and it's true. We don't communicate with each other the same way women do for some reason.
Anyway, that's my segue into inviting local men to come and learn more about Men's Sheds while enjoying breakfast Saturday Feb 8 at 9am at the Centreton Community Hall. Our special guest speaker will be Janelle Eisler from Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre. She is the Manager of Community Engagement and will be speaking to us about the role Cornerstone plays in the community and the support and services they provide to those in need.
We are looking forward to finding ways we can be of help to the centre and their clients.
Be sure to mark your calendar so you don’t miss this speaker.

Please come out to the breakfast and share this with any men you know.
