Hip or Knee Pain?
By B.D Mitchell Prosthetics and Orthotics
Look to your feet for relief. When not experiencing foot pain, few people think about them when their hips or knees hurt. They may be told it is arthritis or cartilage damage and do not consider how the alignment of their feet and ankles may be contributing to their discomfort. As we age, many people become more sedentary and see an increase in body weight. The arches of the feet can become flatter over time due to excess pressure from above and weakness developing underneath. As arches flatten, they fall inwards too. This causes the leg to rotate inwards. This rotation puts the knees and hips out of alignment. Depending on the amount of arch collapse, the foot may require a significant amount of correction to ease the hip or knee pain. Deep-cupped corrective foot orthotics have been found to work wonders at alleviating pain in joints further up the body. Diane Calder, BSc KIN, CPed(C), Pedorthist.

A great article from one of our Certified Pedorthists, Diane Calder, about Morton's Neuroma and the treatment of this painful condition. You can visit Diane at our Comox office!

Treating Morton’s Neuroma

This foot condition is first noticed as a tingling or burning sensation in two of your outer toes. Sometimes there is a sharp, stabbing pain in the ball of the foot. Symptoms are usually only felt when weight is on the foot. When you sit down and put your feet up, the sensation disappears. What is happening is one of the arches in your foot (there are 3 arches) is dropping, and the bones have shifted and are pinching a nerve. Wearing shoes with good support around the heel and a wide toe area will sometimes relieve your symptoms. A metatarsal pad placed in the correct position may also relieve your symptoms for a while. The long-term solution is a custom foot orthotic to correct the bone alignment and remove the pressure. If left untreated for too long this condition may become chronic and require injection or surgical intervention.
