As temperatures begin to even out, we always find a soothing satisfaction when things start to slow down a little and a chill creeps back into the air. October is the perfect time to recharge ourselves, and rest.
Most of us confuse rest with recreation. To rest, we do things like hike, garden, work out, or even party. Any of these activities can only be termed restful because they are breaks from work; but truthfully, they are not, and cannot, be defined as rest.
Rest has been defined as a kind of waking sleep, experienced while you are awake and aware. Rest is the essential bridge to sleep, and we achieve rest and sleep the same way: by making space for them and allowing them to happen. Every living organism needs rest, including you. When we don’t take the time to rest, eventually its absence takes a toll on the body.
Below are a few easy ways to start getting the rest your body needs:
Sitting in silence is a great start
Acunap: it’s a great form of rest! To those who don’t know what an acunap is, most of our patients drift in and out of sleep (and that’s what we call the acu-nap) wavering between sleep & relaxation and a greater sense of clarity. Time to decompress, to rest, restore, and rejuvenate.
Spending time alone, reading or watching / doing something low-key with the family
When you’re driving, drive in silence: turn off the radio and stow your phone
Designate half an hour to an hour for silence. Try taking a few conscious breaths, during which you focus on your inhale and exhale or the space between breaths
Mindfully drink a cup of tea, read something inspirational, write in your journal, take a hot bath, or get acupuncture!

How does acupuncture help digestive conditions like IBS, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis, constipation, and more?
Acupuncture is helpful for all these conditions, and can also reduce generalized bloating, abdominal pain, and irregular bowel movements that aren’t associated with any particular condition.
Basically, if you have any kind of digestive discomfort, it’s pretty likely that acupuncture can help!
There’s some fantastic research (multiple studies) that show acupuncture impacts the digestive tract by:
- Regulating gastric motility, aka, how food moves through the digestive tract. Acupuncture has an especially strong impact on the motility of the stomach and colon.
- Reducing inflammation of the mucosal lining (essentially the protective barrier) of the digestive tract.
- Regulates GI sensitivity, i.e., abdominal pain, bloating, irregular bowel movements.

How many acupuncture treatments do you need to help manage anxiety?
This is such a great question 👍
Acupuncture is cumulative. This means that after each treatment, the goal is for you to feel a little bit better, for a little longer, until you get to a place where you can manage your stress better. Then we can start spacing the treatments out, to see how you feel.
A lot of people feel relaxed and less anxious after one acupuncture treatment. To make that feeling last, however, multiple treatments are needed.
How many?
It always depends on the person, because everyone is different. Generally the recommendation is once a week for 6-8 treatments.
Then we’ll try two weeks between treatments, then three, etc.
Many of our anxiety patients come in monthly for maintenance treatments.
Acupuncture is incredibly helpful at *preventing* anxiety once we’ve got it under control, so wellness visits are a very helpful option at that point.

Have you tried our Cold Laser Therapy + Acupuncture?

Cold Laser Therapy is a great alternative therapy to surgery or medications that can effectively treat a wide variety of soft tissue injuries and pain. It’s a modern twist on the ancient healing practice of TCM acupuncture and provides pain relief and healing for a wide diversity of patients. It’s also a great option for patients who are sensitive to acupuncture needles.
By targeting acupuncture points using the red-light photons (infrared), laser therapy stimulates - the nervous system, stimulates repair of tissue, reduces inflammation, and relieves pain in muscoskeletal disorders.
Laser light also stimulates fibroblast development and accelerates collagen synthesis in damaged tissue for faster recovery.
Cold laser can be used in 2 different ways.
- Targeting acupuncture trigger points (like acupuncture but without the needles)
- Broad coverage of tissue and bone with InfraRed or Red-light photons to reduce pain and inflammation and stimulate healing
