How to choose a longarmer to quilt your quilts
Do you have a quilt you are not sure how to get it quilted? Are you unsure of the process longarmers use to quilt your quilt? I am a longarmer for over 10 years and a quilter for more than 30 years. I consider myself very lucky to be doing what I love as a business and get to share with you, my experiences. I offer custom quilting using both computerized and hand guided techniques as well as computerized all over quilting designs.
When choosing a longarmer for your quilt there are many factors to consider. First, it is an honour for me to have a chance to work on your quilt that you worked so hard to make.
Does the longarmer offer custom work such as ruler work, ditch work, fills, feathers and more? Are these computerized designs or hand guided. Both techniques are good, the computerized custom quilting can be more accurate while the hand guided quilting is more organic.
Custom quilting means that every block or border or square is quilted separately from each other with complementary designs. This can be done by computer or by hand guided which I offer both. Obviously, this process is very time consuming and the cost is more than an all over design.
Is the longarmer only offering pantographs that are a set size or can the designs accommodate the size of your blocks. The advantage of edge-to-edge designs that are computerized vs a pantograph that is hand guided is that the size of the design can be reduced or enlarged to fit your quilt. The size of the design also determines the density of the quilting. There are thousands of computerized designs to choose from.
Threads used for the quilting is also a big factor in quilting process. I spend time on each quilt to determine which size thread to use as well as the type of thread whether polyester or cotton, shine or no shine. The outcome of the choice of thread will make or break the quilting. If the thread is too heavy it can absolutely take away from the quilt top. It is important that the quilt be number one and not the quilting in most situations. If the quilt has lots of negative space then that is when the quilting becomes first and shows up.

How does my machine work?
Do you have a new or new to you sewing machine? Don't know what all the buttons are for? Not sure what all your accessories are for. I can help you with that. This class is get comfortable with your machine class. It's not that scary. We will go over different rules of thumb no matter the kind of machine you have. There will also be a question period.

Join us for a full day of Machine Embroidery Workshop
This is the perfect workshop for all levels. Meet like minded embroiderers all while making these three take home projects. Learn how to install a zipper on your embroidery machine, work with metallic threads and a variety of textured fabrics including plastic, suede and more. We will make a sewing machine tote bag, a mug rug and a small zippered bag all on the embroidery machine. Minimum hoop size is 5” x 7” to make these designs. All makes of machine accepted.
Retreat/workshop Saturday January 27th from 10am to 4pm. Cost is $60.00. Kits will be available at a minimal cost.
