MEMORIES OF CHRISTMAS PAST: When I was very little snowy winter days seemed chock full of exciting things to look forward to at this glorious time of year, and anticipation of the Season was more memorable than material gifts that were soon lost or forgotten.

Christmas Concerts were important for our small rural community and preparing for it to take place in our “one room” schoolhouse started very soon after Remembrance Day was over. When the excitement of starting a new school year evolved into a predictable and familiar daily routine, our wonderful teacher Mrs. Perrich would begin organizing us for that most important event.

Decorations for the school were never purchased, but rather carefully crafted by each student big or small. We meticulously “copied” a vast array of Christmas pictures to hang on the walls by cutting pages out of Christmas coloring books, tracing them up against the window and then coloring them carefully. Red, green, and yellow strips of paper were glued into long “chains” that were strung across the ceilings, and innumerable Christmas bells, holly leaves and berries were cut, colored and put together to be taped to each big window and tacked to the walls. Mrs. Perrich used her enviable artistic talent with colored chalk to create a lovely Christmas Nativity scene on the big blackboard at the front of the room. Once done, every one of us looked forward to arriving in our festive classroom each day.

Along with the excitement of decorating was the short daily practice for the Christmas Concert at the end of each day before our busses came to pick us up. The program always centered around the Nativity Play, where all students – big and small – were assigned a “part” and hours were spent with our dear teacher helping us practice our lines and playing her piano - leading us with her clear strong voice in singing familiar Christmas carols together. Our Nativity Play and our choir was interspersed with the older students reciting Christmas poems – some humorous - to complete the concert entertainment. The rest of the evening was then spent enjoying the potluck of goodies and visiting with neighbors. Each year, joy of joys, Santa Claus himself would arrive at the very end of the night ringing what looked exactly like our large brass school bell and calling each of us to his lap to share our Christmas wishes and receive a small bag of candy before we dispersed home to our own Christmas celebrations. These treasured memories for me have lasted far longer than those of any gifts I received back then.

On behalf of everyone at HELPING HANDS, myself and my family - may your Christmas celebrations be blessed and full of good times spent with those you love and making memories that will last a lifetime. Merry Christmas.

IN MY EXPERIENCE living in rural Alberta opens the door to unfettered beauty regardless of the Season. You just have to pay attention.

On a "roadie" to Red Deer yesterday, we were treated to broad expanses of drifted wind swept prairies, stands of naked trees standing in stark contrast against the bright blue Winter sky, a myriad of animal tracks over the frozen ponds and sloughs, "diamonds on the snow" in the fields and ditches, and picturesque snow dusted river valley coulees. Beauty is everywhere you go if you just look for it. 🙂 I love our Alberta.

**this is a picture of hoarfrost on the trees and fences just coming down out of the beautiful Handhills just South of Delia.

Blessings.

Another cherished tradition of Christmas in our small rural village of Delia, is the annual Christmas Concert. In the 1990"s - the Elementary Grades entertained the crowd of parents, grandparents and friends with the Christmas play, and the Junior and Senior High School choir "wrapped up" the event with traditional carols. When the carols were sung the school year was done and we all went home to enjoy our Christmas. My two oldest daughters are in this picture. Please feel free to share any pictures you may have of a Christmas Concert that is a wonderful memory for you.

Friday's FACES of HELPING HANDS will begin to spotlight our most wonderful Community Service Providers. Today we will get to know Sue Eggins, who is our most senior member of the team.

Sue started with HELPING HANDS in October 2006 and has been instrumental in initiating, managing and growing the Hanna service area. Sue is the type of employee that everyone would want: kind, compassionate, honest, with a huge heart and always doing what she feels is best for her clients. We are so grateful to have someone like her representing HELPING HANDS in the community.

"Hi my name is Sue and I've been employed with HELPING HANDS for 14 years. I am originally from Lloydminster and have lived in Craigmyle with my husband Dave for nearly 32 years. We raised two beautiful daughters who have since grown up and moved away and married. We have 2 beautiful grandbabies whom we enjoy so much. Whenever someone asks me what I like about my job, I always say 'the clients'. I love working with seniors and have met so many awesome people through my job. They are always so appreciative of everything you do for them. It is a very hard transition for some of our little people to release the reins and accept help, so I hope I can make the transition a little easier. Who knows, maybe I could be here another 14 years!! Happy holidays everyone and stay safe".
