Have you ever noticed how sometimes, moving your body can trigger tears to flow? This fascinating phenomenon speaks to the intricate connection between our physical and emotional experiences, known as somatics. When we engage in physical activities like dancing, yoga, or even simply stretching, we’re not just moving muscles – we’re also releasing tension stored in our bodies. This physical release can unearth buried emotions, leading to tears as a form of emotional discharge. Somatic experiencing experts suggest that our bodies store memories and emotions in different areas, and certain movements can activate these stored sensations, bringing them to the surface. As we move, stretch, and breathe deeply, we create space for these emotions to emerge, often resulting in tears as a natural response to the release of pent-up energy. So, the next time you find yourself unexpectedly teary-eyed during a mindful movement session, remember that it’s your body’s way of processing and releasing stored emotions.
