Earlier this year we re-established North Cowichanโs Economic Development Committee, with a mandate to facilitate socially and environmentally responsible community economic development within the municipality. This is the first time North Cowichan has had such a committee in nearly a decade.
Through a provincial grant from the Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program as well as funding from the Island Coastal Economic Trust, we have begun developing a new Economic Development Action Plan, which will include engagement with local businesses, industry, unions, non-profits, co-ops, farmers and First Nations to identify economic development opportunities in the municipality.
Engagement is now underway, and a project page is available on Connect North Cowichan: https://www.connectnorthcowichan.ca/ec-dev
This week I sent out invitations to First Nations, businesses, and industry representatives to participate in this process either through online submission via a survey, or a presentation to the Economic Development Committee. This preliminary input is to hear ideas and learn more about opportunities and challenges that exist in the region.
The project is currently in the initial research and data analysis phase. In spring and summer 2024, additional engagement will take place in the form of focus groups or meetings and special topic analysis.
The new Economic Development Action Plan will be drafted in the fall of 2024, and will include a roadmap to encourage more high-quality and high-paying jobs, support a diverse range of sustainable businesses, provide a solid tax base and benefit all residents.
