Maple Bay Painters had a wonderful outdoor show last weekend in the lovely gardens of Rae and Ted Rhodes. Thank you to all who attended and, especially to Rae and Ted, whose well-tended garden was such a beautiful backdrop for our artists’ work. What a great day! Here are some of the photos taken that day.

Yesterday, at Maple Bay Painters, we had a special Drawing Day led by member, Bonnie Schmaus, who brought in bundles of flowers from her garden as drawing subjects. The focus was on contour drawing, where you try to turn off your critical brain, put your pencil to paper and, most importantly, don’t look down at your paper or lift your pencil while drawing, simply letting your pencil trace the outer edges—the contours—of what you see. It’s quite a challenge not to look and not to judge. But the result often captures the essence of your subject with what seems a fresh sincerity, even if the subject is not immediately recognizable! We all had a good laugh and went home with a new perspective on how to approach a drawing or use contour drawing as a warm-up to a more polished drawing or painting project. It was a fun day! Thank you, Bonnie, and everyone who attempted contour drawing!

Did you know that Maple Bay Painters hosts four workshops each year with various Vancouver Island artists? This month, Tuesday, May 21st, is the last workshop for this 2023-24 season. It will be a portrait workshop led by Sue Fenwick. The workshop will be suitable for painters in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, graphite, or pen and ink, regardless of your level of experience. Members have first priority registering, followed by non-members after May 6th. Maple Bay Painters is committed to keeping its workshops affordable at just $55 for members and $65 for non-members, when space allows. The maximum class size is 12 participants. If you’d like to attend, email [email protected] to register; first-come/first-served. Once you are confirmed registered, you’ll receive a materials list and instructions for payment. If you'd like more information, see a description of the workshop at: https://maplebaypainters.ca/page/workshops [C.T.]
Maple Bay Painters had another enjoyable workshop with landscape artist Tom Shardlow, AFCA. Tom is a signature-level member of the Canadian Federation of Artists, coming from Nanaimo to deliver his popular acrylics workshop. His technique involves working out a subject with chalk lines on a black gesso background, followed by artist-selected colours and, at the end, wiping away the chalk. The results are often quite impactful and always fun. Here are a few photos of our day, some of which share examples of Tom’s work. Thank you, Tom, for such a great day!

Christmas 2023 has come and gone; it seems to happen a little faster every year. Now 2024 is looming on the horizon so let's the make the best of it.

Hi painters! Mark November 27th on your calendar for Iron Oxide Art Supplies reopening!
You heard it here first. Our opening date is set for November 27th. We have begun moving the mountain of boxes and displays from the storage units. I was hoping to open a little sooner than this but there are dreams and there is reality... The hardworking team has been going strong 7 days a week for months now to get operational again and it is no small feat what has been accomplished. There is still a ton to do but there is truly light at the end of the tunnel!!!!
Countless people have enjoyed the Christmas favourite film It's a Wonderful Life. Now you can experience "It's a Wonderful Life - A Live Radio Play" at Chemainus Theatre, from November 17 to December 23.
I, Maple Bay Painters member Roger Jackson, am honoured to be the featured artist for the duration of this show. An eclectic cross-section of my work will be displayed in the theatre's lower and upper lobbies and dining room.
Last month, artist Carolyn McDonald, delivered an acrylics workshop to Maple Bay Painters. Many of you may know that Carolyn is known for colourful, abstracted landscapes among other subjects. In this workshop, Carolyn shared how she abstracts parts of her paintings to add originality and impact. She encouraged participants to try new approaches for creating representational and figurative paintings, combining abstraction and realism to make paintings more powerful and, importantly, develop a style of your own. Here are a few photos to illustrate the fun we had.

Great news from Catherine - congratulations!
FYI all you artists in the Cowichan Valley, Iron Oxide Art Supplies is reopening in a new location in Nanaimo!
This is it! At last, our annual fall show & sale opens 10:00am tomorrow morning, Friday September 29. Then from 5:00pm - 7:00pm we will have our opening reception; meet the artists, discuss their work.
Sometimes it’s just darn hard to get attention! But look closely and you’ll see our Maple Bay Painters show poster! Plan to come, and to our reception on Friday evening too! We’d love to see you there!
PS. Apologies to the posters our poster has infringed upon. There was literally no room to place it without covering the edges of another. We promise to remove it right after the weekend, revealing any that were temporarily covered. It’s a popular notice board, for sure!

The Cowichan Valley’s Maple Bay Painters art group has been painting and meeting in the Valley for more than 50 years. Except for our Covid years, we’ve had an annual show to share our work with you in a welcoming, community environment. This weekend, Friday and Saturday, September 29th and 30th, from 10 am to 5 pm, is our annual show, returning again to St. Peter’s Church Hall at 5800 Church Rd. Admission is free, and there will be three original paintings given away as door prizes! But you’ll need to attend to get your name into the free draws. There also will be a reception on the Friday evening, from 5 to 7 pm, with live music, finger food, soft refreshments and good conversations with the artists and your friends. Lots of original art to see! Mark your calendar and invite your friends. All ‘shares’ are much appreciated! Hope to see you there.
