Visions ARTIST PROFILE - Catherine Fraser
At the studio enjoy the ambiance of estuary views and many media. Visit Catherineâs studio and multi media artworks with guest artist Linda Weech artist and photographer. Images are representational and imaginative of landscapes and figures.
New artwork was done outdoors in Spain during an artist residency in June 2023. I used the three colours of yellow, red and blue. I chose to mix the colours with water and medium to paint thinly in layers. I was interested in the light, the sunrise and the shapes of the trees.
I have a new painting called âLong Beach Luminescenceâ. Itâs a 16â x 40â acrylic. Iâve painted this view to Lovekin Rock many times but never when the day was fading into twilight. When I lived nearby, years ago now, I would walk the length of this beach, rain or shine, with my children and earlier as a teenager, often alone but never lonely. There were even times when I was there in the dark with friends, all of us young then, when we would be wrapped up in the mystery of night, the warmth of friends and the excitement of our daring, searching the sky and looking to the waves for signs of bioluminescence. These were the days before the area became a national park, a time of innocence and optimism for our lives and futures, none of us yet shoulderingâor even imaginingâ the weight of adult concerns. Even so, I know that at any time a walk along the shore will dispel most burdens and lift the spirit. Whether alone or with another, itâs always going âhomeâ.

The Visions Art Studio Tour is happening for the first time in two years! Friday the 8th, Saturday the 9th and Sunday the 10th. 10-5. So many great artists. I will have my art displayed and for sale all weekend... outside. Would love to see you for a visit.
An important part of being a painter is having your creative work find a âhomeâ. My watercolour painting, âCherry Point Bridgeâ, found its home on Saturday, sold at the âArt in the Gardenâ show. Thank you to its new owners! As an artist, itâs so satisfying when someone appreciates your work to the extent theyâd like to have it in their own home; thatâs a true compliment and encouragement. Someone wise once said that a painting isnât truly finished until it starts on its independent journey, beyond the painter. Whether gifting or selling, a painting travels into the life of another person or family, often extending beyond the life span of the originating artist, into future generations and an unknowable ultimate destination. I love that mystery; it spurs me on to paint even more!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the "Art in the Garden" show yesterday! It was a fabulous day. Now we're approaching the return, after the too-long pandemic interruption, of the three-day Visions Open Studio Tour, starting on Friday. So if you'd like to see more of my art and that of other local artists', plan to visit our studio spaces this coming weekend. All participating artists and studio locations are online at: https://visionsarttour.ca/map
Hope to see you then!

Mark your calendar! It is just one week until the three-day Visions Open Studio Tour returns, on July 8th, 9th and 10th, after missing two years to the pandemic. Iâll be participating and hope youâll stop by for a browse of my work and a chat. Information and a map of all artistsâ locations are on the Visions web site at: https://visionsarttour.ca/map

On Saturday, July 2nd, about 18 or so of my Maple Bay Painter friends are gathering for an art show in one of our memberâs garden, a truly lovely place, and Iâll be there! Generously hosted by Rae and Ted Rhodes at 2229 Tarn Place, the show will run from just 2 to 4 pm, so aim not to miss it! Look for the âsunflowerâ art show signs along Lakes Rd, turning onto Lochsyde and then onto Tarn Place. The âsunflowerâ signs will guide you to the show in Rae and Ted's beautiful backyard garden. Once there, youâll meet all of the participating artists, each sharing an original painting as a sample of their individual work and each keen to have a chat with youâall very casual and comfortable, rain or shine. Mark your calendar! And thanks in advance if you could share this post with your Facebook friends, inviting them too. You can tell by the poster, created with two of Raeâs paintingsâsheâs been busy, both painting and gardening! Looking forward to seeing you!
