It is a natural occurrence that plaque and tartar build up on the surfaces of our teeth over time. While natural flora made up of healthy bacteria are used break down food and prepare it for digestion, harmful bacteria tend to grown and multiply with refined sugars in our diet leading to the formation of the harmful plaque. Left to its own devices, plaque can harden and calcify, resulting in tartar buildup.

No matter how eventful the upcoming months become, supervise that your family is brushing twice a day for 2 minutes. Brushing alongside your children for 2 minutes, twice a day for the three months of summer gives you 6 extra hours together, so make the most of them!

With the eruption of first teeth, if your child is considered to be at low risk, the teeth can be brushed by an adult using a toothbrush moistened only with water.

Children from 3 to 6 years of age should be assisted by an adult in brushing their teeth. Only a small amount (a portion the size of a green pea) of fluoridated toothpaste should be used.

Some ideas to make brushing fun:
- Play music and read books about brushing
- Brush as a family
- Play brushing games! Dodge sugar bugs as you help your child brush, search for animals in their mouth and make each animal sound as you think you see each one, let you child play dentist!

NITROUS OXIDE

There are actually three common forms of dental sedation. Perhaps the most popular is nitrous oxide, a colorless, odorless gas that puts patients at ease during basic dental procedures.

- Even though nitrous oxide is often called “laughing gas,” you likely won’t be fighting back laughter while your dentist is working inside your mouth. Instead, you will feel extremely relaxed

-One of the major benefits of nitrous oxide is the fact that it wears off almost immediately after your dentist removes your mask

Most toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients such as calcium carbonate that help rid your teeth of plaque and bacteria. Similarly, the bristles on your toothbrush do a good job of scraping away these harmful elements. However, brushing too hard can actually damage the enamel on your teeth, leaving them more vulnerable to tooth decay.

When brushing, use about as much pressure as you would when writing with a pencil on paper. Make sure to use a soft-bristled brush instead of a medium- or hard- bristled brush. Brush in small circles for two minutes and don’t forget to floss!

Regular check ups and cleanings (age 3+)

It is important for your child to visit at around the age of three for a cleaning with one of our registered Hygienists and a check up with the Dentist.

Routine hygiene maintenance appointments are a necessary part of keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Your child’s first visit to the Dentist should be around the age of one, unless you have any concerns.

Happy visits are complementary but more importantly expose your child to a happy dental experience!

We encourage parents to book happy visits early on to ask any questions and learn about recommended child dental care.
