Spotlight on Feature Film: Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection
For the first time, we hear Karen Carpenter’s personal struggle in her own voice through never-before-released recordings—and through the legendary voices of those who knew her and were inspired by her music. As the #1 American musical act of the 1970s, the Carpenters were on “Top of the World,” producing a string of pop masterpieces. But behind closed doors, Karen’s quest for perfection resulted in low self-esteem, a disheartening love life, and a public battle with anorexia nervosa, which resulted in her untimely death at the age of only 32. Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection is a captivating, revealing, and unvarnished documentary providing astounding new insight into the singer’s tragically short life and enduring musical legacy...

Close to You marks Elliot Page's first leading role in 6 years. This feature film was also co-written by Page.
Sam (Elliot Page) hasn’t been home since his transition, and after four years in Toronto, he takes a long-dreaded trip back to Cobourg for his father’s birthday. On the train there, he runs into Katherine (Hillary Baack), a friend from high school with her own complicated life now, and feelings from their unresolved past begin to bubble to the surface. It’s a serendipitous encounter, as Sam worries about seeing his family after so much time apart — not for fear that they’ll reject him, but because of the unsolicited comments and questions he’ll receive about his transition, placing the weight of his family’s ignorance and discomfort squarely on his shoulders.

Our Story
OSCAR Qualifying! MovieMaker Magazine's 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee! And 34 years of history. The Edmonton International Film Festival is Alberta's original international film festival.
CALL FOR ENTRIES opens on DECEMBER 15th.
FESTIVAL DATES: Sept. 24 to Oct. 3, 2020
The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) is a truly unique festival that champions the bold and challenges the status quo. It is equal parts creative, demanding, celebratory, discriminating and, in the end, just a hell of a lot of fun.
SHORT FILMMAKERS... EIFF is your final OSCAR® Qualifying Festival of the year! We announce the two (2) OSCAR® qualifying films in the LIVE ACTION and ANIMATION categories on SATURDAY, Sept. 26. The application deadline to AMPAS (The Academy) is 5pm PT on WEDNESDAY, Sept. 30.
So who are we? We're just a bunch of fu***ng lucky individuals who signed on with EIFF 15 years ago because 'how hard can it be?' Honestly. That's what we said. All of us here in EIFF land had real gigs -- film production, freelancing, broadcast, journalism, raising goats. Some of us still do those things, but very part-time now. This thing, this film festival, is becoming a force. We come from production, so when you tell us your film is a rough cut, temp audio and no color correct, we understand that! And we are passionate. We love films, and the people who MAKE them. So much so, that when you have a film screen here, you become part of our family. Hope you like us! And for the record, it's a whole lot fu***ng harder than we imagined!
Here's the official description. The one we paid a professional to write. It's all true. But tastes a bit like dry toast. Bear with us.
