What Unites Buddhism and Psychotherapy? One Therapist Has the Answer. 10/08/2022

“Kindness is the thread that runs through the work of [D. W.] Winnicott, [John] Cage and the Buddha,” [Mark] Epstein writes, “each of whom discovered that noninterfering attentiveness — in a mother, an artist, a meditator or a therapist — is, by its very nature, transformative.”

What Unites Buddhism and Psychotherapy? One Therapist Has the Answer. In “The Zen of Therapy,” Mark Epstein weaves together two ways of understanding how humans can feel more settled in their lives.

What a wonderful event! Deep gratitude to CINS, Indian Summer Festival, Shushma Datt, and all the panellists for this wonderful conversation!

The CINI 2022 conference has got off to a great start, and we are thrilled to partner with them on an event titled 'Shakti: The Artistic and Healing Force' as part of our 'Artist as Healer' project. The panel will be a reflection on Women's health for our times, featuring master yoga practitioner and teacher Yogacharini Maitreyi, Dr. Farah Shroff, Takemi Fellow in International Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, and writer and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) expert Dr. Hannah Marsh of the Mindfulness Institute. Listen to these powerful thinkers speak of a decolonized approach to healing, and make a powerful case for the coming together of artistic and scientific approaches to find remedies against despair.

CINI 2022 is an international healthcare conference produced by our partners Canada India Network Society (CINS) and the Global Association of Physicians of South Asian Origin. CINI 2022 will bring together leaders to share barriers and solutions from a gender lens. The conference aims to open up new vistas of integrative thinking with thought leaders and practising physicians to share transformative innovative pathways for a healthy civil society.

To attend the talk or the entire conference (all online on Zoom), register for free here: https://thecins.org/cini-2022-program/

"I want to learn to rest
like a tree in winter"
- Heather Plett

As the days grow shorter and much of the living world slows down, we may find our own rhythms slowing, too. Around us, the human world is as busy as ever - holiday shopping, work events, family gatherings - and we might find ourselves powering through, trying to keep up. But what if, instead, we gave ourselves permission to slow down? What if we honoured this natural impulse to rest?

Join us for Sunday's Mindfulness & Creativity class - we'll explore restorative mindfulness practices, and give our minds some quiet space to reflect.

“Scientific understanding of mindfulness goes beyond mere stress-relief and requires a willingness to engage with stressors,” said Igor Grossmann, corresponding author of the project and a professor of social psychology at Waterloo. “It is, in fact, the engagement with stressors that ultimately results in stress relief. More specifically, mindfulness includes two main dimensions: awareness and acceptance.”.“Mindfulness might not provide an easy answer to the divisiveness that surrounds us, but an accurate understanding that includes the practice of acceptance may herald the re-emergence of sincere discussion and authentic connection.”

Healers, therapists, friends, and lovers!

When you sit with a friend in pain,
when their world no longer makes sense;
when confusion rages
and no rest is to be found.

Just for a moment,
will you resist the temptation
to make things better,
to reassure them,
to provide answers,
even to heal them?

Will you offer your stillness, your listening,
your presence, and the warmth
of your immediacy?

Will you hold them in your heart
with the same tenderness
of a mother holding her little one?

Will you embrace them where they are,
without needing them to change or transform
according to your own needs and schedule?

Will you stay close,
holding your own impatience and discomfort near?

Will you look into their eyes
and see yourself?

Will you stay in the inferno of healing with them,
trusting in disintegration,
knowing that you are only witnessing
the falling away of an old dream?

Sometimes in doing nothing
everything is undone,

and love is revealed to be
the only true medicine.

Silent Retreat — The Mindfulness Institute.ca Silent retreats are held once or twice a year. Our next retreat will be held on Saturday, September 11, 9:30am - 2:30pm MT, with Priscilla Koop and Hannah Marsh, online via Zoom.

Meditation can feel like a solitary activity, sitting quietly, witnessing our own direct experience, getting to know the habits of our minds. It can be tremendously valuable to take this time for ourselves. But that doesn't mean we have to do it alone. In fact, for most of us, the practice isn't sustainable alone; we may find support in a community, or sangha, to help nourish our mindfulness practice and our well-being.

We often hear from our participants about how valuable it is to practice together - even in this era of online classes, there's something special about practicing in community. And so we invite you to join us! Whether you're new to meditation, or your practice has fallen away, or you have a steady practice that would benefit from the supportive presence of others, you're incredibly welcome at our classes. Most of our programs are by donation - including the silent retreat on Saturday, Sept. 11, and our monthly drop-in classes.

We hope you can join our community of practice!

Interoception: the hidden sense that shapes wellbeing 08/18/2021

Why meditate? Feel free to reply with your own answers!

Here's one reason that caught our eye this week:

Mindfulness meditations - like the body scan - can help develop interoception. As we practice, we become more adept at sensing the body from the inside. This may have tremendous value for our sense of well-being: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2021/aug/15/the-hidden-sense-shaping-your-wellbeing-interoception

For a more in-depth look at mindfulness and interoception, including brain changes, and the added factor of trauma: https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.02012/full
