We are incredibly lucky to have had Divine Flooring as our Exclusive Flooring Sponsor since 2016. Time and time again, they've been there to support our teams by donating their products for designers to create beautiful spaces and dream up out-of-the-box designs that showcase their vision and endless creativity.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
At the Brick & Mortar Festival, Divine Flooring gifted the festival with beautiful flooring so that local Edmonton businesses could simply step into a freshly built pop up space and trial their small business concept in a physical space downtown.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
With each iteration of our festival, we want to deeply thank Divine Flooring for their continuous generosity and contributions to the art and design scene here in Edmonton and beyond. The versatility of their products are endless, and we'll be doing a flashback recap in our stories of some truly stunning vignettes designed by past participants using Divine Flooring products. We also had to sneak in 2019’s Gatsby Speakeasy Floor into this feed post 🤩

Marilyn Langevin is an Amiskwaciwâskahikan (ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ) based artist who created the powerful piece, "Spirit Children". Marilyn's work is currently on display as part of our banner project with .
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
SPIRIT CHILDREN
"This work honours the resilience and pain of Indigenous parents who lost their children to the Indian Residential School system and other genocidal policies that, since then, have worked to eradicate Indigenous Peoples and culture on our home lands. This work also honours the children who would have been sisters, brothers, parents, and elders in our communities. The delicate handprint of an infant reminds us of the spirits of the lost children who will always be in our hearts and will always walk the earth with us."
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
work explores issues of identity and historical and person ancestry. Amiskwaciwâskahikan means "beaver hills house" which is the Cree word for this homeland now called Edmonton.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The mural incorporates images of a silk screen print of a mother crying and children's moccasins made from subsequent edition of the screen print. The face of the mother incorporates and image of epithelial cells of the womb. Indigenous icons include a headband, beaded earrings, and a replication of a prayer written by Langevin's grandmother using Cree syllabics.

Today on , we’d like to feature 'Half Grassed', an exploration of sustainability and greenwashing in the art and design communities— an installation concept created by .

“Through the use of salvaged and upcycled materials, Half Grassed questions whether art and design can truly be sustainable when it is fundamentally centered around consumption. is more than choosing biodegradable materials. It’s balancing ethical production and environmental preservation while ultimately remaining economically viable.”

As a design company, we are continuously aiming to better our practices and understand we have a lot of room to grow. We do our best to reduce waste by reusing materials where possible, plan for waste mitigation, be conscious of material choice, and aim to produce installations that have a longer life span.

Did you know that there is a type of paint that can be used for CO2 removal? Our team at Vignettes would love to explore more options and learn about innovative systems that can make a positive environmental impact in the art and design industry. Have any ideas or things you already practice? Please feel free to share below!

Meet Marilyn: Marilyn Langevin is a multimedia artist, engaging in sculpture, contemporary glass beading, collage, painting, drawing, print, installation and film/video. Her current work explores what it means to be a contemporary Cree-Metis woman who is in the process of discovering, re-discovering, and re-connecting with ancestral inheritances. A huge thank you to our partners and Prairies Economic Development Canada, as well as our amazing businesses, collaborators, sponsors and stakeholders for their continuous support. The businesses are still open for online shopping, so be sure to check out their websites!
