We represent a team of committed, holistic healthcare professionals working together to best serve your needs. To us, integrative holistic medicine is about embracing all knowledge, both traditional and modern evidence-based systems.
Acupuncture treats ailments from a whole-person perspective. Read our blog (link below) to find out how this approach creates a foundation for healing and health.
Acupuncture for Vitality - Protecting the "Three Treasures" - The Acupuncture Turning Point In traditional oriental medicine, the concept of vitality is woven through virtually all aspects of treatment plans, and is described as “the three treasures” – Jing, Qi, and Shen.
Electroacupuncture is a modern acupuncture technique in which a small current is passed between two strategically placed needles.
It is especially beneficial in helping resolve both acute and chronic back and neck pain. We use it quite often in treatments at our clinic, often in combination with cupping and gua sha.
Although electroacupuncture might LOOK scary, it’s not painful. You might feel some slight tingling or vibration, and we always make sure to adjust the settings for your maximum comfort.
Most people feel great afterward, with less tightness and more mobility in the sore areas.
Have you tried electroacupuncture yet for your back or neck pain?

Also relaxing and invigorating, achy and euphoric? ✨
You guessed it...acupuncture!
Everyone responds differently to acupuncture depending on their constitution and unique circumstances.
Some feel deeply relaxed enough to finally sleep restfully; others feel energized and ready for anything.
Some notice their mind stop racing and shift to calmness; others are flooded with fresh and positive thoughts for new directions.
Some experience the slight discomfort of achiness or tingling when the needles are placed, but then embrace a strong sense of happiness and well-being as the body responds with its feel-good molecules. Or some skip the discomfort and go right to the feel-good response!

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is a warming herb that is especially useful during the winter months. In Chinese medicine terms, it helps the body to “dispel cold and dampness” and raises your Qi and yang energy, which in Western terms could be considered as “boosting the immune system”.
And unlike some of the other traditional medicinal herbs, ginger is readily available in regular grocery stores. So, it’s easy to make this immune-boosting drink at home to help ward off all those colds and flus this winter!
*** How to Make a Hot Ginger Tonic ***
Boil 2 tablespoons (about 2 inches worth) of fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced, in 4 cups of water for 10 minutes. If you like it stronger, increase the boiling time to 20 minutes. Strain out the ginger slices as you pour it into a cup, and stir in a tablespoon each of honey and lemon juice.
Enjoy the taste and the health benefits!

Remember those 4 pillars of health we talked about few months ago? (exercise, nutrition, relaxation, and sleep) They all have one thing in common – boosting your immune system function!
Acupuncture works to support each of these 4 areas to keep your immune system strong and help ward off all those colds and flus that have been going around this winter.
Here are 4 ways acupuncture can help support your immune system and keep you healthy this winter:
1. Reducing the physiological stress response
2. Promoting better sleep quality
3. Improving digestion (which leads to better nutrient absorption)
4. Treating painful conditions (to allow better movement and exercise)

Did you know you can get hot stone and hot towel therapies with your massage? ✨
Especially now that winter is upon us, heat therapy can be a wonderful addition to your massage!
Marisha still has a few spots available over the holidays, check our website for her schedule.
✨✨✨
In addition to promoting relaxation, heat promotes blood and lymph circulation and speeds healing from chronic inflammation. The soothing effect of heat reduces pain and facilitates the massage.
Hot towels can be used to give relief from sinus issues or facial pain, and are a helpful tool to fully release those last bits of tension at the end of a treatment. A hot, moist towel applied to the low back, or neck or other painful area can create a luxurious, immediate and deep sense of relaxation before massaging the area.
We now have a special towel heater in the massage room to keep them at just the right temperature. These towels are ready for you in any massage service.
Hot stones hold their heat longer than towels and so give a deeper state of heat pe*******on. Marisha is skilled at applying just the right pressure to slide the stones along, or if you like, the stones can just be left in place for a while.
The special smooth stones are different sizes and shapes to get just the right fit. They're kept ready in a hot water bath and sanitized between clients.
✨✨✨
Ask us about adding heat therapy with your next massage! You can book your appointment through our website (acupunctureturningpoint.ca) or call 780-437-7723.
The research says yes! According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) website, there is strong evidence that acupuncture can help with painful conditions such as:
💥Back and neck pain
💥Knee pain associated with osteoarthritis
💥Postoperative pain
💥Joint pain associated with using certain drugs to treat breast cancer (aromatase inhibitors)
The data also shows that the benefits of acupuncture when treating painful conditions such as back pain, osteoarthritis, or headaches ✨can last for up to a year✨ after the end of treatment!

Thinking of trying acupuncture to induce labour? Start earlier if you can!
We often get calls from women near the end of a pregnancy who want to try “induction acupuncture” to get labour going. Many times, they’re stressed by a prescribed deadline within days for a medical induction, which they’re hoping to avoid.
There are times when acupuncture can help the body to relax into labour if it’s close. So it’s definitely worth a try.
But a better approach is using acupuncture to prepare the body and mind for a few weeks – rather than a few days – before the expected birth.
The effects of acupuncture treatments are cumulative, that is, they build on each other over time to gently and gradually help your body get ready for labour on its own. So, we recommend pregnant moms come in for weekly acupuncture sessions starting from around week 36 until the baby is born.
Acupuncture can help prepare the pelvis and cervix for birth, calm the mind, and ultimately lead to shorter and easier labours.
Even if a medical induction is unavoidable, women who have prepared for the birth with acupuncture often have fewer complications.
Additionally, acupuncture can help to ease late pregnancy-induced symptoms such as hypertension, heartburn, joint pain, and difficulty sleeping.

Acupuncture is many types of medicine…
🌿Traditional – The first practice of acupuncture started as long as 3000 years ago; research is ongoing into the mechanisms of how acupuncture works and many modern medicines have in fact been developed from traditional knowledge.
🌿Complementary – Acupuncture works alongside conventional medicine safely and without causing detrimental side effects.
🌿Integrative – Acupuncture combines with conventional medicine and other therapies to produce additional benefits.
🌿Holistic – Acupuncture takes into consideration the health of the person as a whole with body, mind, emotional, social, and spiritual dimensions.
🌿Natural – Acupuncture works through the body’s own healing, signalling, and regulatory mechanisms.
🌿Preventative – Acupuncture prevents disease and dysfunction through establishing, protecting, and prolonging health.
Side note: Acupuncture often gets categorized and described as *alternative* medicine but this is not accurate. Acupuncture is not alternative medicine – that is, it’s not a substitute for regular medical care! Always make sure you see a doctor for any serious health concerns.

Change is inevitable. As the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus famously remarked 2500 years ago, “the only constant in life is change”!
And despite living with the constant of change, it’s still hard to get used to and can be scary and sad sometimes.
Eastern traditions teach that humans are connected to the natural world and experience its same cycles. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is the season of letting go. It’s the time to shed the physical, mental, and emotional clutter that has accumulated throughout the past year. It’s the time in the cycle for contracting, closing, and turning inward.
It’s normal to feel sadness as we experience the natural decay of leaves turning colour and dropping off and the days turning colder and darker.
But also, there is great beauty to be found in the process and great meaning in the necessary preparations that make way for renewal.
What will you let go of this fall that is no longer serving you?

Beyond the specific pains and health issues that bring people to our clinic for acupuncture, I've noticed over the years that the motivation behind people's reasons for seeking care can be summarized into three categories:
1) Last resort for a new acute pain or injury
2) Reset for chronic or recurring pain or health problem
3) Maintenance and prevention
Want to find out more about which of the three reasons acupuncture is the most effective for?

The only 3 reasons people seek out acupuncture - The Acupuncture Turning Point There are so many pains and health issues that bring people to our clinic. But over the years it is obvious to me that the motivation and expectations behind why people seek out acupuncture can be narrowed down to only 3 reasons. Whether its back pain or stress-induced insomnia, people come to us wi...
This quote comes from a study published last month that examines how acupuncturists help patients make lifestyle changes.
At our clinic, we often emphasize that acupuncture shouldn’t take place in a vacuum, it should be part of a larger constellation of lifestyle factors that all work together to support health both acutely and for the longer term.
The study looks at promoting healthy behaviours from a public health perspective, but from our perspective, each patient we meet represents an opportunity to make a difference in their life personally to be healthier and more functional.
Acupuncturists do have an important role in taking some of the pressure off the healthcare system – from the point of view of preventing disease and dysfunction, supporting the optimization of health, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
The degree to which we can help one person is the degree to which that person can live a healthier life. And public health is a collection of individual healths, after all.

One of the most common causes of neck and back pain these days is looking down at your phone for long stretches of time.
In addition to causing pain, this forward head posture also reduces breathing capacity, places an abnormally heavy load (your head!) on your cervical spine, and weakens muscles in your neck and upper back.
With the beautiful fall we are having here in Edmonton, there are plenty of reasons to look up and enjoy the amazing fall colours adorning our urban forest. It’s good for body and spirit alike!

When you stretch out a tight muscle, do you know if you’re doing it the right way?
We often recommend stretching for our clients to work on between sessions.
But it’s important to do it right - to avoid causing further damage, and to get good results.
Here are 6 important things to keep in mind when stretching:
1️⃣ Think lengthening, not pulling. Tingling, tearing, or tension are signs that more damage may be happening.
2️⃣ Hold the stretch for at least 2 minutes, but don’t bounce or push past the point of sensation. It takes time for the body to soften and open.
3️⃣ Aim for 4-6 on a discomfort scale of 1-10 (hint: 4 is better). “No pain, no gain” is wrong. “No pain, no pain” is better! Learn to differentiate discomfort from pain.
4️⃣ Stay within a comfortable range of motion. Build trust over time rather than forcing the body before it’s ready.
5️⃣ Maintain awareness of ALL parts of the body - especially 10 fingers, 10 toes, and top & bottom of the spine. Don’t let one part scream so loud that it drowns out the others.
6️⃣ Keep breathing! We hold our breath when frightened, agitated, and upset. Intentional breathing reminds the body – in fact convinces us – that we are not overly stressed and can handle this.
Learning to stretch properly is essential to recovering from injury and overcoming chronic pain. Proper stretching can set the stage for healing and getting the most benefit out of your acupuncture and massage treatments.

What if you could live pain-free without medication? What if you could get away with fewer pain meds?
Some of our acupuncture clients do find their chronic pain gone for a period of time following treatment.
Acupuncture treatments and pain pills are not exactly interchangeable in all cases, but they can work together to noticeably improve quality of life for people with chronic pain.
One of the superpowers of acupuncture therapy is the ability to - safely and without side effects - provide an extra level of pain relief when used in conjunction with pain medicine or with another therapy such as massage.
This means you might need to take fewer pain pills, or can take them less often, after receiving acupuncture treatments from a qualified professional.

Check-in time! Every now and then, it’s worth checking in with yourself to evaluate how you are faring with respect to four key pillars of health: exercise, nutrition, sleep, and relaxation.
These four components are widely considered by experts to be crucial factors that influence and determine one’s health and feeling of wellness.
They are interconnected pieces that work together.
For example, good nutrition creates energy to exercise, exercise releases feel-good molecules that help lower stress, mentally unwinding allows for better sleep, and better sleep leads to extra energy, and ability to concentrate and emotionally regulate.
So, if any one of these pillars starts to deteriorate, it can lead to imbalances and compromised health in all of the four areas.
As a reminder, here are some general daily goals to aim for:
✅ Exercise: 15-30 minutes
✅ Nutrition: 4-6 servings of plant-based whole foods
✅ Sleep: 7-9 hours
✅ Relaxation: 10-20 minutes
Consistently steering yourself back toward these targets when you find yourself off track can ultimately lead to a greater proportion of your lifespan lived in health, rather than difficulty and discomfort.
Many of our clients find acupuncture and massage to be effective tools that help in restoring balance - both physically and mentally.
We are here to help you get back on track and stay on track with your health goals.
If you need a bit of a boost in sustaining these key pillars of health, connect with us to see how acupuncture and massage can help you return to healthier habits and feelings of wellness.

Have you tried cupping? Many of our clients experience considerable improvements in neck or back dysfunction when we integrate bodywork techniques such as cupping, together with acupuncture in the same session.
Cupping initiates physiological healing processes that massage or acupuncture alone does not.
Cupping can break the adhesions associated with injury, inflammation and fibrosis. But more than that, this technique can initiate a healing response through provoking rapid turnover of local tissues that are stuck in being run-down, stagnant, and exhausted.
We always warn our patients, though, that they will probably be left with some temporary purplish or reddish circle marks after treatment!
These marks may look like terrible bruises but they don’t feel like a bruise. Instead, they may feel warm and active for a few days. The marks generally fade away within 3-7 days.
Typically after treatment, the range of motion is greater and stiffness or tightness has diminished.
Interestingly, the circle marks that show up on subsequent visits are often less intense or even absent, a change which usually accompanies lasting reductions in neck/back pain and tightness.

When most people think about acupuncture, they think pain relief. But did you know that acupuncture can improve many other health outcomes as well?

✅ Improve recovery time between training sessions
✅ Support digestion
✅ Enhance fertility
✅ Reduce nausea/morning sickness
✅ Turn breech babies
✅ Prime the body for labour & delivery

The understanding of the ancient practice of acupuncture is evolving as science uncovers more about how acupuncture therapeutically affects the body and mind.
Research has shown that acupuncture impacts the nervous system, endocrine, hormone, and immune systems.
Acupuncture works by boosting the body’s own capacity for healing and – unlike drugs – does not have the same problems with side effects.
Our therapists take time to listen to your story and investigate the root of the problem, instead of focusing on symptoms alone.

The summer solstice has special meaning in human cultures stretching back to ancient times.
Today - the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere - marks the official astronomical transition from spring to summer.
According to the Five Element theory in Chinese medicine, the elements of water, wood, fire, earth, and metal become dominant at different times in the natural cycle and exert influence on a person’s health.
In Five Element theory, the summer season is associated with:
🔥 the element of fire
🔺 the colour red
❤️ the heart
🏃♀️ increased energy
😄 feelings of joy
This inflection point in the yearly cycle of light and dark is a space to reflect on the past and ponder the future.
So, this optimistic season is an opportunity to connect with how your heart feels and the direction it wants to go.
It's an invitation to harness the invigorating energy of fire from the long hours of daylight and use it to fuel the momentum you need for growth and change.
There are many ways to celebrate this warm and joyful season -
watching things grow,
noticing the creatures,
savouring the warmth on your skin,
listening to the leaves rustling,
scrunching your bare toes in grass,
looking up at meteor showers,
gazing into a campfire,
taking a dip in bodies of water
…as people have for time immemorial.
Here, the summer solstice is designated as Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day, in recognition of the traditional significance of this day of maximum daylight. We respectfully acknowledge that this land we live on and work from is located in Treaty 6 territory, within the Metis homelands and the traditional territories of many First Nations including the Nehiyaw (Cree), Denesuline (Dene), Nakota Sioux (Stoney), Anishinaabe (Salteaux) and Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).
Happy summer solstice everyone!

The most important energy point of all time in Chinese medicine is Stomach 36 (ST 36), found below the knee, a hand width down, and a finger width out from the tibia. It's considered a general wellness point - in fact, in China it’s known as the point of longevity and in Japan it’s known as the point to cure 100 diseases!
The Chinese name for this point, zu san li, roughly translates to “three extra miles”. Legend has it that ancient Chinese troops made a habit of stopping each mile and rubbing ST 36 to give them more energy to continue marching. Yes, you can walk three extra miles, the legend goes, when you get regular acupuncture at this point.
In Chinese medicine theory, one way this point helps derive more energy is via improved digestion. Even when you eat the best food, if it is not being digested properly, then you don’t get the benefit, right?
This makes sense when you think about issues like food sensitivities, acid reflux, diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel conditions. They are often accompanied by low energy, partly because essential nutrients are not being absorbed properly.
ST 36 is also one of the main points researched and used in sports medicine for achieving the highest levels of performance. ST 36 together with a couple of other leg points can improve performance in athletes and reduce recovery time after training.
In the classic acupuncture perspective, universal energy (Qi) flows up and down the limbs along meridians and interconnects the internal organs. From this view in which mind and body are not separate, ST 36 affords energy in other ways too - through lower stress levels, reduced pain, better sleep, and brighter mood to name a few!
Book your appointment today to experience the powerful effects of "three extra miles".

You may be wondering – is it actually possible to relax when you’re lying there with needles sticking into your skin??
Actually, it is very possible, and in fact, many of our clients get so relaxed they even fall asleep on the table! ..
🔍🔍🔍 How does acupuncture work for stress and anxiety?
One way is that acupuncture creates lasting deactivation of the amygdala – the brain region responsible for processing fearful and threatening stimuli. The amygdala is also centrally involved in laying down strong emotional connections to certain memories.
Another way is that acupuncture helps regulate stress hormones such as cortisol. Chronically high levels of stress hormones can cause a cascade of other health problems such as high blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, and poor sleep.
Through these mechanisms, regular acupuncture treatments can help teach your body over time to become less reactive in a “fight-or-flight” way to life’s stressors. ..
🌿🌿🌿 We want you to feel comfortable during your treatment!
If you want to experience the benefits of acupuncture, but do feel a little anxious about the idea of needles, know that our practitioners will always take the time you need in order to feel comfortable.
We can use small needles, start very gently on some distal points, and won’t do any needle placements that you’re not comfortable with.
During treatment we continue to be attentive to your comfort and make adjustments accordingly...
✨✨✨
