Today was a milestone in history as the City of Edmonton made a proclamation for November 8 Indigenous Veterans Day. Although this day was recognized nationally in 1994, it’s taken a while for local government to give recognition. But! It’s a move in the right direction. We’re hopeful more support will be made available for Indigenous veterans. Special thanks to president Chuck Isaacs of the Aboriginal Veterans Society of Alberta for your decades of service and now advocating for veterans 🙏
"Mayor Amarjeet Sohi presented the proclamation to the Aboriginal Veterans Society of Alberta in a ceremony at City Hall today - November 8, 2023.
Veterans Affairs Canada estimates 12,000 Indigenous people served in the First World War, Second World War and Korean War. An estimated 500 died.
National Aboriginal Veterans Day was established in 1994." (CTV News, 2023).
