Back to School 2024-25: Instructor designs simulation to discourage misgendering 09/13/2024

Meet Brianne Forest (MRI '14), chair of the MRI 1st Discipline program. Every cohort of her students undergoes a series of uniquely difficult role-playing simulations that foster necessary dialogues and promote understanding critical to high-quality health care. It’s not meant to be a comfortable situation but not a combative one either; curiosity should guide the encounter, not blame.

That's why it made sense to add simulations around pronouns to the mix, and focus on ensuring that colleagues and patients aren't misgendered, and creating a safer space for people to be who they are.

NAIT partners with startup to develop industrial batteries that use saltwater 09/05/2024

It might not be surprising to learn that water conducts electricity. But Keith Cleland's project at the Centre for Grid Innovation is dedicated to water that can store electricity.

Aqua-Cell’s newly developed battery – big enough to provide power at an industrial scale – runs on inexpensive, safe and readily available saltwater. Aqua-Cell’s loftier goal is to store energy long-term for power producers, filling a gap in energy storage that affects people across the country.

Student awards a win for record-breaking hockey goalie 08/13/2024

In a career year that ended with multiple broken records and an ACAC championship, Kaitlyn Slator solidified herself in NAIT Ooks hockey history. Over her five years with the Ooks, Kaitlyn earned three diplomas to go along with her hockey accomplishments. Student awards played a big role in her success both on and off the ice.

“I probably wouldn’t have been able to focus on school and find my path if it wasn’t for the help of those student awards,” says Kaitlyn. “Thank you for your support – it hasn’t gone unnoticed by student-athletes like me. Donations to student awards make a huge difference in our lives.”

Beginning his career at in 1963, Garry Meadus dedicated much of his career to creating a welcoming campus. He’s often credited with founding many of the services students use to this day, getting the Ooks Athletics program off the ground, and helping to establish the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC).

Inspired by Garry’s philosophy of providing students with the support to play, participate and succeed inside and outside the classroom, the Meadus family established a scholarship endowment in 2023 to support four annual awards for NAIT student-athletes.

How a NAIT researcher is building community around tailings pond research 08/08/2024

Dr. Heather Kaminsky brings a lot of passion to the research and education surrounding mining, and oil/gas extraction. Of particular interest to her is the translation of knowledge from the lab back to industries and communities to help improve processes, lower carbon footprints, and improve the management of waste streams like tailings.

She runs courses that range from the geology of mine closures, to oil sands tailings management, but she also offers a free webinar open to anyone about Tailings Management in which she teaches case studies on how to manage them properly. You can register at NAIT.ca/tbc.
