At CUE, we can sit in the back. But someone will always invite us to the front. We also offer 2 after-degree programs, 3 master’s degree programs.
Concordia University of Edmonton has played an important role in Alberta’s educational history since 1921. In 1987, Concordia began to awarding undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences. Today, Concordia’s undergraduate (Bachelor) degree offerings include over 45 majors and minors in the fields of Arts, Science and Management. These degree may be augmented through several graduate certificate and diplomas which are offered by Concordia in high demand areas.
CUE astrophysics researcher Dr. Stephen Portillo has been collaborating with a group of researchers with the DECam Ecliptic Exploration Project (DEEP) to understand how many of these identified Kuiper Belt objects are binary pairs—and he's getting his students involved with research, too.
“This summer, I’m working with one of my students to see how little data we need to ‘rediscover’ Pluto’s moon because that will inform us, when we look at all of these Kuiper Belt objects, if we actually have a shot of finding these binaries with this sort of method,” Dr. Portillo shared. “Another student of mine is trying to answer the question of how close two stars can get before you can no longer tell them apart. And where the rubber hits the road is when you start to use real images to test your algorithms.”

Dr. Matthew Churchward at Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) has been awarded more than $358,000 over five years from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for a Discovery Horizons Grant that supports research into microglia and astrocytes, types of glial cells in the human body that support the brain and spinal cord during potential injury or damage.
Dr. Churchward, Assistant Professor in Biological and Environmental Sciences at CUE, is leading research that aims to understand how functional electrical stimulation devices can be better engineered to improve their effectiveness, notably in longer-term applications. Partnering with University of Alberta Professor Dr. Vivian Mushahwar, Dr. Churchward’s research explores how these glial cells respond to electrical fields and explores whether response to FES varies between sexes.
