Record Collectors Paradise

Wow! What a treat to see this in our Jazz feature room at North Wing Records. As many of you know, Edmontons newest record store just opened (same location as RCP), called North Wing Records, which is an expansion of the largest used record store in Edmonton, and this month we are featuring Jazz. This could potentially be the largest and most curated selection of Jazz in any record store, being technically 3 stores worth in one store. The cool background about this has a great example in these 3 different Kind Of Blue LPs! All 3 of these albums come from all 3 sources used to create the Jazz room at North Wing Records… the first, is an original USA PROMO press, from the record store we bought out in the USA, the next copy is an original USA mono press, that comes from a large vintage collection we bought over the summer, as one of the better Jazz collections we’ve ever seen, and the final copy is a testament to the amazing records that walk through our doors at RCP every day (this copy just came in a few days ago), an original Canadian mono press, 6 eye, but unfortunately not the greatest condition. However, the other 2 copies are in amazing condition, and just goes to show when you come to dig at Edmontons largest used record store, you’re gonna find many options like 3 different original press of Kind Of Blue, for example!

Original Canadian press of what many consider to be the greatest album of all time! Me personally, I love this album, but I dig Trouble Man even more! It’s hard to get original press copies of Marvin Gaye’s seminal albums, but when they do come in they are battered and beaten. Well not this copy! It’s in amazing condition, and some reviewers even go as far to say that the Canadian press may even be better than the USA pressing due to the superb pressing quality of Canadian wax! I’ve also heard a 1980 pressing which many consider to be the single best sounding pressing of the album, but this one sounds amazing in its own right, and it’s an original gatefold! If you’re looking for collectible, first pressing, with the largest single selection in Edmonton, do yourself a favor and come on down to RCP!

Parliament just walked in the door! This album is from 1980, slightly later in their discography, but still fonky enough for a house party, or a boat party, or a moon party, which ever party you’re into, best believe Mr Clinton and Mr Bootsy hisselfs is almost always involved! We don’t see Parliament/Funkadelic OGs come into this part of the world too often, so it’s great to see! Out on the floor now!

Edmonton’s premier used record store just got a nice collection come in yesterday with some tasty treats, including this gorgeous condition Tracy Chapman debut album in the original shrink wrap with the original hype sticker!!! This copy is in remarkable condition and it’s super cool to see the hype sticker! Out on the floor now!

Sho nuff we get our fair share of amazing pieces in Edmontons largest used record store! When we’re not buying records, we are buying audio gear, and also memorabilia! Behold, an actual worn jewellery piece owned by The Jimi Hendrix! Given to a family member of a friend of the store back in 1968 on tour in Boston, this is one of the rarest pieces we’ve seen! RCP has it all, even game worn Jimi Hendrix pendants! You want to sound like Hendrix, dress like Hendrix, or channel his gift? Consider this potentially magical piece of history! Unfortunately, there is no certificate or record, other than a family hand me down, though sometimes that’s how things like this go!

New feature section at the front we are excited about! The 3 crates on top of the hoodie shelf near the front counter has 3 rows of “pricey records”. Albums spanning from collectible vintage originals, to modern indie releases that are out of print.. sometimes these records are over $100, sometimes they are a few hundred, but nevertheless sometimes they get buried in the bins and don’t get seen as often. Well, we’re excited to say we started SLASHING the prices on these babies, and we’re not just squakin a measly $10 bucks, some of these records have been reduced by up to 50%!! So come on down to RCP and don’t forget to browse through Reg’s front counter SALE bins, or the newly featured PRICEY SALE bins! You never know what gem might be waiting for you!

All new and improved MODI sections! Mobile Fidelity is an audiophile re issue label, featuring some vintage Mofi and some modern Mofi. Find this section packed full, alphabetized, and ready for your diggin hands! As well, all of our One Step Mofi box sets can be found at the back of the store located in the showcase! At RCP we’re all about audiophile pressings, and there’s tons to be scored!

Out of all the coolest and rarest items that have ever come into RCP, this has to be one of the coolest and rarest, by far! This is an original program magazine from Woodstock, and an original (still perforated) concert ticket from Woodstock, featuring all three days! Both the program and ticket are in remarkable condition, minty minty. With the event becoming a free event, tickets stubs were not likely to survive in mass amounts, and what with the rain and mud all weekend, chances are most programs and tickets would not have survived the weekend. Very exciting to see up here in Edmonton!

One of the first Daptone records released! This is the mighty Thunder Chicken, by The Mighty Imperials! Released on CD initially in 2001, this LP version was not released until 2004 with this alternate cover. 12 steaming greasy Funk tracks, including a killer cover of Cold Sweat, this is one of the better examples of Funk in the 2000s era, and helped kicked off a long 20+ year history of the revival of this genre. Head over to YouTube to check out the video by Daptone of their recording studio where they turned an old Brownstone into a remarkable analog recording studio! If you like drums that smack, bass that fuzzes and grooves, guitar licks that sound like a thunder chicken, this album has it all! Oh, and it’s loaded with drum breaks! Original 2004 press on the wall!
