Week 3
It’s all in the little things.
Here is something I was made aware of in class. It was a simple movement and although I thought my extended leg was straight, my ankle was not. We were lying on our backs with our legs moving from table top to stretching away from the body. I was extending my legs, reaching out to the wall and feeling like I was getting taller and rocking the exercise!
Kesha, our teacher came by and straightened my left ankle as I was definitely turning it in. I didn't realize. I know I have been corrected before in Reformer class but thought it was more the springs encouraging me to do that. But no! It was 100% me.
Now you may be thinking it’s no big deal but it is. By making that small correction, the tension felt on the outside of my ankle was released and I felt more centred allowing for better core connection and smoother movement. Crazy right? One small correction and the exercise improved.
That correction has also led me to look at how I stand and if I let it, I notice my left ankle rolls in toward my other foot. This definitely affects my balance. Not so much walking, but if I try to stand on one foot, I cannot do it at all or only for a short time. I used to be able to do this no problem. Now when I try, I look like I am caught in a massive wind, wobbling and swaying to and fro and falling off balance. I never realized why I was having trouble until that little correction. Focusing on straightening and strengthening the ankle is definitely helping.
Regardless of age,we all know strength, flexibility, balance and the freedom to move our bodies with ease is key to a healthy and active life. For me being on the “older” side chronologically, this is so important and Mat class is helping me to recognize where I can do better to continue to be strong and feel good.
Cheers to noticing the little things!
Have you been ready Gail's view from a mat? She is learning a whole lot of new stuff, maybe you would like to try it too?
This is your warning!! Now is the time to get that Beast out!!

Week 2
Monday, March 4 at 4:30pm was my 2nd Intro to Mat Pilates class. My body was complaining from an early morning Reformer class, a busy family weekend and a trial bowling session in preparation of our upcoming charity event. Frustrating for sure, but surprisingly, after my Intro class I felt soo much better!!
Did you know that there are about 600 muscles in the human body? Now we all know about the major muscles and we use them to some extent every day and in other forms of exercise. In Pilates YOU CANNOT ASSUME you are going to work the same muscles! There are so many smaller ones that help to stabilize at the joint level and contribute to strengthening those larger muscles and our bodies in general. Without their support, strength and flexibility, those larger muscles get overworked and tired.
Working those smaller muscles and even just feeling them or parts of them is a challenge. Once you give yourself permission to slow down and focus, you will be amazed at what you can feel and do.
I had a small awakening in this class. We were doing leg extensions by lying on one side, making sure our legs are stacked one on top of the other and not leaning forward or back. We lift our top leg hip height ONLY and move it slowly in front and behind the body. Now I have done this many times on the Tower using the leg straps attached to springs. In Mat Class, there are no springs to assist you. Here is where the light bulb went off for me.
In Mat class, I am totally in control of this movement. The cue: reach or extend your leg away as if you are standing on that leg or reaching toward the wall is key. When I did this, I clearly noticed the difference in the hip crease! This same cue is used on the equipment too but the feeling of extension here was definitely more pronounced without the springs to pull and push me. When I didn’t extend my leg reaching away and making myself feel taller, my leg felt heavier and keeping it hip height was harder.
So, what did I learn?…listen to the cues…listen to your body and focus. The moves may be small but the results are limitless!
Thank you to our wonderful clients! We are happy to see you each week.
It may be hard today to make that change
