Today begins WORLD SPACE WEEK!
From today, October 4th until the 10th, World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events:
October 4, 1957: Launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration
October 10, 1967: The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies.
Don't forget to look up at our beautiful night sky this week! Space is still so vast--you never know what you might see right above your head! We recommend visiting spaces with low light pollution, like Fundy National Park, for the best view of the stars!
Come visit us!! 🍎

September 30th marks National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. Today is also Orange Shirt Day.
Today, we honour the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools in our country is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
We encourage folks to become involved in supporting, uplifting, grieving and protecting those affected by the residential school system.
The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation offers a comprehensive list of resources for parents, teachers and anyone interested in the reconciliation process and the history of residential schools in Canada. Please visit it here: https://trw-svr.nctr.ca/

We're only a day late... but happy Autumn everyone!🍂🎃
Yesterday, we experienced the Autumn Equinox, where our Sun was positioned over top the celestial equator--resulting in a day with equal hours of night and day.
For thousands of years, humans have noticed changes in the sky above us and have noted them down, assigning them importance. Changes in the night sky equals changes in the climate, making it essential for ancient humans to be able to track the cycles of the seasons and to know how the night sky correlates with changes in the environment.
Enjoy the cooler weather, folks! We are excited to share our upcoming plans for the season!
Thank you for having us! Merci beaucoup!!
Today and tomorrow! We’re pleased to be part of the Charlotte County Fall Fair. Stop by to play, discover and learn! 🍂🍁🔬

We have prepared a Q&A in regards to our last post about our future plans. We want to make it clear that this is not the end of Science East--but the start of a new beginning! We will still be active in our community and providing hands-on STEM education opportunities for youth and adults alike all across New Brunswick. Please do not hesitate to reach out!
Announcement - Taking steps towards a brighter future for Science East
We are grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from New Brunswick families over the past several months as we’ve limited our programming to STEM education workshops and outreach at community events. We have heard that you believe, as we do, in the power of hands-on science education for youth. We have heard that many of you miss having a place to visit and explore. We also miss welcoming visitors to our science centre.
We have reflected on the future of the organization and its ability to deliver on our mission, as well as what makes sense and is feasible given fiscal and resource realities. We concluded that the location in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick no longer suits our needs as a public science centre.
In consideration of the future we imagine for Science East, we have made the decision to list our current property for sale. All proceeds from the sale will go toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of our STEM education programs and establishing a better future for Science East.
You might wonder why we are making this decision now. In February 2024 we made the difficult decision to temporarily close public access to our facility due to financial and resource constraints. This decision has given our Board and team much-needed time to assess options for the future of Science East.
The former York County Jail is a fascinating building full of history, but it has become clear that the space is not suitable for us as we look to the future of Science East. Our organization’s value rests in our delivery of experiences, not in the building. We’re excited about establishing a more accessible, welcoming and appropriate space for our important work.
We are actively looking for an appropriate location to serve as an interim space for Science East as we further explore the possibilities for a new long-term home for a science centre in New Brunswick.
As always, Science East will continue to offer science workshops for youth, participate in community events and lead professional learning opportunities for teachers thanks to the generous contributions of funders and donors who understand our situation and are supportive of our plan.
We offer a heartfelt thank you to families, friends, supporters, funders and staff for reinforcing every day that the work we do makes a difference in the lives of New Brunswick youth. We are excited to continue to inspire and inform through hands-on learning opportunities.
We can’t wait to collaborate with each of you as we take the next steps in building a brighter future for Science East. There is a fulsome Q and A document on our website if you have further questions, or please feel free to reach out.
Thank you!
Adam Harris, President
Jennifer MacDonnell, Executive Director
