An interesting look at a different kind of culvert....
🌳🌲
Un regard intéressant sur un autre type de ponceau....
Interesting information - if you spot an oily sheen on water, swill it with a stick and see whether it is oil or bacterial...
🌳🌲
Information intéressante : si vous repérez une pellicule huileuse sur l'eau, rincez-la avec un bâton et voyez s'il s'agit d'huile ou de bactéries...
Find out if the oily sheen on your water surface is a naturally occurring biofilm or a sign of petroleum-based pollution by breaking it up with a stick!
💦 Spilled petroleum will separate and quickly swirl back together after the stick is removed.
💦 If the oily sheen disperses naturally when disturbed by the stick, bacteria may be present. Some bacteria rely on manganese and iron, appearing oily, slimy, orange, red, or black as the metals solidify.
💦 During the spring and summer, the clumping of insect skeletal cases may also form dark clouds with an oily sheen in the water.

The office will be closed on Monday, September 2 for Labour Day.
We wish everyone a happy long weekend!

Le bureau sera fermé le lundi 2 septembre pour la fête du travail.
Nous souhaitons à tous un bon week-end !

local scientists have found a number of rare species in survey of Chignecto Isthmus. 📰
The area is an important priority habitat corridor – for wildlife that can't fly or swim, the only path between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia is across the Chignecto Isthmus.
Sean Blaney and a group of scientists from Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre recently surveyed a strip of land north of Scoudouc, between Shediac and Moncton.
🐦They documented over 58 species of birds.
🌿They also identified 360 species of plants, 270 of which were native species and 90 exotic.
"Larger patches of that nature are becoming rarer all the time in our region," said Blaney. "It can be a struggle to find more mature forest in larger patches in this region because it has a really long history of human occupation and quite intensive use for forestry and for other land uses that have converted the forest entirely."

Fireflies: Flickering lights in the night
🌙 Fireflies are beetles in the Lampyridae family which undergo complete metamorphosis in four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
🌙 They are nocturnal and use bioluminescence for mating communication, warning signals, and occasionally mimicry of prey species in the same family.
🌙 Their common habitats include wetlands, riparian areas, and fields and forests lining ponds, streams, rivers, and lakes.
🌙 Firefly population threats include light pollution, habitat degradation and loss, poor water quality, pesticide use, invasive species, and climate change.
