The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, or Bingham Cup as it is more widely known, is the biennial world championships of gay and inclusive rugby.

The tournament was first held in 2002 in memory of 9/11 gay rugby hero Mark Bingham, one of the passengers who fought back against hijackers on board United flight 93. While Mark and all on the flight tragically lost their lives when the plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, it is widely recognised that through the actions of those brave individuals on board, the plane did not continue on to its intended target.

As a gay man and regular rugby player, Mark played for San Francisco Fog as well as helping to set up Gotham Knights in New York City. The Bingham Cup is held in honour of Mark’s memory and challenges stereotypes and perceptions of the LGBT+ community. Mark’s legacy sees rugby players, supporters and staff from around the world coming together every two years in a celebration of equality, inclusivity and sportsmanship.

Le Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament, ou Bingham Cup comme il est plus connu, est le championnat du monde bisannuel de rugby gay et inclusif.

Le tournoi a été organisé pour la première fois en 2002 en mémoire du héros gay du rugby du 11 septembre 2001, Mark Bingham, l'un des passagers qui s'est défendu contre les pirates de l'air à bord du vol 93 de United. Si Mark et tous les passagers du vol ont tragiquement perdu la vie lorsque l'avion s'est écrasé près de Shanksville, en Pennsylvanie, il est largement reconnu que, grâce aux actions de ces braves personnes à bord, l'avion n'a pas poursuivi sa route vers sa cible.

En tant qu'homme gay et joueur de rugby régulier, Mark a joué pour San Francisco Fog et a contribué à la création de Gotham Knights à New York. La Bingham Cup est organisée en l'honneur de la mémoire de Mark et remet en question les stéréotypes et les perceptions de la communauté LGBT+. L'héritage de Mark voit les joueurs de rugby, les supporters et le personnel du monde entier se réunir tous les deux ans pour célébrer l'égalité, l'inclusion et l'esprit sportif.
