How to Help Your Dancer Navigate Perfectionism 💜💚
In dance, aiming for excellence is totally normal. Whether it’s mastering a tough routine or getting that technique just right, dancers naturally set high goals for themselves.
But when striving for improvement turns into perfectionism, it can cause frustration, self-doubt, and even burnout.
While wanting to grow is great, expecting to be flawless all the time can put a lot of unnecessary pressure on young dancers and leave them feeling like they’ll never be good enough.
Perfectionism usually comes from setting unrealistic standards. Dancers might get stuck on every tiny mistake, even when they’re actually making progress. This can lead to anxiety and a drop in confidence, and it can also take the fun out of dance. But with the right support, dancers can learn to manage perfectionism in a healthier way.
One of the best things we can do is shift their focus from being perfect to making progress. Encourage your dancer to celebrate their small wins and improvements, even if they aren’t “perfect.” Remind them that mistakes aren’t failures—they’re stepping stones to getting better. Teaching them to replace negative self-talk like "I’ll never get this right" with "I’m improving every time" can help build self-compassion and resilience.
Most importantly, dance should be fun! When dancers reconnect with the joy and creativity of movement, the pressure to be perfect fades away. Helping them find that balance between working toward their goals and enjoying the process will not only support their mental well-being but also set them up for long-term success in dance.
💜 The Sweetest Smiles 💚
Whether it's to be super lean, flexible, or to have the "perfect" dancer's physique, there has always been so much pressure on dancers to meet certain body ideals, leading to a lifetime of body image struggles.
For us, supporting our dancers means supporting their minds and bodies ⎯ which means we take body image concerns seriously. Here's how you can help your dancer navigate these challenges and build confidence from the inside out:
💜 Focus on what their body can do ⎯ Rather than focusing on the idea that a dancer's body needs to look a certain way to succeed, celebrate all that their bodies are capable of. When we shift the focus away from appearances and towards abilities, we help our dancers build a healthier, more empowering perspective of their bodies.
💜 Have open conversations about body image ⎯ these sorts of struggles can often go unnoticed, especially in younger dancers who may not yet have the language to express their feelings. It's important that we normalize open and honest discussion about body image so that they feel comfortable sharing.
💜 Promote health habits over restriction ⎯ In a time when diet culture is rampant, it's important to emphasize healthy habits over unhealthy, restrictive behaviours. Dancer or not, fuelling your body with nutritious foods, getting enough rest, and staying hydrated are needed to thrive.
💜 Lead by example ⎯ As instructors and parents, it’s important to be mindful of the example we set for young dancers. Children pick up on how the adults around them talk about their own bodies and others'. By speaking kindly about our own bodies and focusing on health, strength, and gratitude for what our bodies do, we set a positive tone for kiddos to follow.
By focusing on abilities rather than appearance, encouraging self-expression, and creating an inclusive, supportive community, we can guide our dancers through these formative years with positivity and empowerment.
Body image struggles are real, but with the right support, our dancers can grow into confident, self-assured individuals who love and appreciate their bodies for all that they can do.
Next time you or your dancer are feeling anxious before dance class or a performance, give these tips a try and see what works best.
What’s your go-to tip for calming your nerves? Let us know in the comments!
It's no secret that we love dance for building strength, improving flexibility, and feeling our best, but what many people don't realize is how much dance can do for your mental health!
At the studio, we get to see first-hand just how impactful dance is for the mind, body, and spirit and whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned dancer, the mental health benefits of dance are truly amazing! Here are just some of our favourite benefits of dance for your mental health:
⭐️ It's a way to relieve stress that's actually fun! When you’re moving to the music, your body releases endorphins (aka the feel-good hormones) that help melt away stress.
⭐️ Regular physical activity, like dance, helps improve mood and fight off feelings of sadness or even depression!
⭐️ It gives dancers a real confidence boost and sense of achievement with every new move or routine mastered, realizing that they can do amazing things!
⭐️ Learning choreography involves focus, memory, and problem-solving, which all help improve cognitive function. So, while your body is getting stronger, your brain is staying sharp.
⭐️ One of the best parts about dancing in a group is the sense of community it creates!
⭐️ Dance isn’t always easy, and that’s a good thing! Facing challenges, like learning difficult moves or facing performance nerves with bravery teaches resilience and builds emotional strength.
⭐️ Sometimes, words just don’t cut it when it comes to expressing how we feel. Dance lets you communicate through movement, whether it’s joy, frustration, or anything in between.
Whether it’s the joy of moving to your favourite song, the confidence boost from mastering a new combo, or the comfort of being part of a supportive dance family, dance isn’t just about getting the moves right—it’s about taking care of yourself, inside and out. 💜💚
Working with the ever lovely was a DREAM this weekend! So grateful for you and the love and education you bring our dancers! Thank you for everything you do! ☁️
